00:00One of the questions I get asked quite a lot is what it's like to use a PS4 Pro
00:04with a 4k monitor as opposed to a 4k TV.
00:12Now there's a few things to consider you've got response time, input lag,
00:16issues around HDR and also HDMI inputs and things like that. On the whole
00:21there's no problem with using a 4k monitor. This is a Philips BDM4037U
00:29catchy name and it's a 60 Hertz 40 inch curved 4k monitor and this costs around
00:35£600 so it's not cheap and you can get some smaller cheaper monitors that
00:41support 4k. Let's pause the game for a second. First of all let's talk about the
00:454k and HDR, the picture quality. If we go to the settings menu, video output
00:51settings and then we've got resolution, RGB, HDR, things like this. The first
00:56thing you should consider if you are planning to use a 4k monitor with your
00:58PS4 Pro is does it support HDMI 2.0. Not all of them do, most of them do because
01:04without it you can't get a 60 Hertz refresh rate if you know we're using it
01:09with a PC. So most do but do check that your monitor supports HDMI 2.0 because
01:14if it doesn't these two here 2160 resolutions will be greyed out. So make
01:20sure you're using that. There is no such thing as a HDMI 2.0 cable, any HDMI cable
01:24will work but obviously to get that 4k res out of the Pro into the monitor you need
01:29the monitor to support HDMI 2.0. So let's assume that's all good which we are
01:34here with this Philips. I can then go down and select 2160p RGB so we've got
01:39full 4k and nice color as well. In the settings I'd also recommend putting the
01:44RGB range to full and then we move on to HDR. Now this really is the main issue
01:50with using a 4k monitor rather than say a 4k TV with a PS4 Pro. There are almost
01:56no 4k HDR monitors out there on the market. I think there may be one or two
02:01concepts or one coming out soon but really there's just no HDR monitors
02:06right now. That's something that may change towards the end of 2017 and 2018
02:10but right now this is going to be your biggest issue with using the Pro on one
02:15of these. Of course if you don't have a 4k HDR TV then you're not really losing
02:19out compared to doing that but if you do have one in your living room and that
02:22does support HDR then your best bet is to use this with the TV rather than the
02:27monitor because for me personally HDR high dynamic range is actually a bigger deal
02:31than the 4k. You get those really bright lights, vivid colors, much better contrast
02:37and dynamic range. It really does add quite a bit in my opinion especially in
02:41games like Horizon Zero Dawn. So for me the biggest issue is a lack of HDR and
02:45that's an issue really with any 4k monitor right now. So now I've jumped
02:48into Resident Evil 7 which is absolutely terrifying and if you haven't
02:52played it I do recommend it although it's possibly one of the most violent
02:56games I've ever played. This is another point where it kind of reminds you that
02:59you really do want, a bit loud, you really do want HDR for the really deep blacks
03:05and bright whites and for the contrast between the light and dark areas to
03:09really be impressive. But the other thing that strikes me is the sound quality.
03:13It's a lot more difficult to get good speakers, good sound quality from a
03:16monitor. If you have it connected to your TV often you'll have soundbars. Usually TV
03:21speakers are better themselves or if you use a 4k monitor with a PC it's much
03:25easier to connect external speakers and soundbars. So with monitors connected to
03:30the PS4 Pro it's a little bit more tricky. You could of course plug in a
03:34pair of headphones. I've got these G933s from Logitech here although you don't
03:38get the surround sound which you would on a PC or of course you could plug in
03:42just a regular pair of earphones and the handy thing with PS4 Pro and
03:45obviously a normal PS4 is that you can plug them in to the bottom like so and
03:52there's your sound. PS4 Pro's fan is really loud. So there's one more issue to
03:57consider, what you're gonna do for sound. If you haven't got built-in speakers
04:00like this monitor does, which is kind of useful but they sound pretty rubbish, I
04:04really do recommend some sort of external speaker. So yeah there's really
04:09no reason you shouldn't use a 4k monitor with your PS4 Pro. It works
04:13absolutely fine. Just make sure you do have HDMI 2.0 to get 4k and to get a 60
04:18frames per second. Make sure you have a good sound system whether you're gonna
04:21plug in headphones or you've got a Bluetooth speaker you can connect to and
04:25also of course be prepared for the fact that you can't get HDR really on PC
04:29monitors right now. That's for me the biggest issue and of course the price.
04:33This is a quite a big monitor but you do generally pay a premium for 4k. It's
04:37still quite a rare technology in PC monitors. It's really for just
04:40enthusiasts, for very high-end gamers and perhaps even for creative professionals.
04:44It's not something I would necessarily recommend to console users. So this is
04:49FIFA 17 and it's one of the few games that does support 60 frames per second
04:53at 4k. Well it's not really native 4k, it's sort of upscaled and there are some
04:57advantages to it. That is kind of how all of the PS4 Pro games work. It's like
05:01some sort of checkerboard effect, some technical behind-the-scenes upscaling
05:05usually. None of them are really natively 4k. The console is just not quite
05:09powerful enough for that. So hopefully you found this video helpful. Thank you
05:12very much for watching. Let me know what you make of the PS4 Pro and perhaps even
05:16using a 4k monitor with it in the comments below. I'm about to lose to
05:20Germany any minute now. They're gonna score, they're gonna score. No, no we're all good.
05:25Yeah but let me know what you think in the comments. Thank you very much for
05:28watching guys. Please do give me a thumbs up if you liked the video and click that
