00:00about the new Samsung Galaxy S21 series.
00:04What's up guys, Saf here on SuperSaf TV.

00:07This was actually a really good video by the way.

00:15But I wanna talk about something a little bit different.
00:17The problem is, I just don't know
00:19if there's anything that exciting
00:21that's gonna make you want to chuck your current phone
00:24in the bin and rush out and buy a new S21.
00:27I mean, there's the usual range of upgrades,
00:29new processor, slightly updated cameras,
00:31slightly design, which I must admit,
00:33I do quite like with this curved edge to the camera module
00:36and also the two-tone design.
00:38I think this purple one looks amazing.
00:40In fact, let's just get the specs out of the way first.
00:42And here we've got the S21 versus the Plus versus the Ultra.
00:46And the big changes include the new chips,
00:49having an adaptive refresh on the Ultra model,
00:51bigger batteries, which I actually think
00:53will be one of the most notable upgrades.
00:54Although I do think the new Snapdragon
00:56and Exynos processors look really interesting.
00:59Some early results from the new Exynos chip
01:01suggest it may actually give the Snapdragon
01:03a proper run for its money this year.
01:05However, in the camera department,
01:07there doesn't seem to be a whole lot new,
01:09aside from an upgraded ultra-wide lens,
01:11fast delays autofocus, and an extra zoom on the Ultra,
01:14but that's about it.
01:16And also the news that the S21 Ultra
01:18is likely to support the stylus, the S Pen,
01:21which is one less reason to go for a Note, I suppose.
01:24It kind of merges the two brands together a little bit.
01:27On a side note, I don't think we are seeing
01:28the end of the Note series.
01:30If anything, because Samsung's brought a launch
01:33in the unveiling of the S21 series so much farther forward,
01:36it's usually the end of February, March,
01:38but now it's the middle of Jan.
01:39That actually gives a bigger separation
01:41to when we usually see the Notes launched
01:43around August, September time.
01:44So I still think we'll see a Note 21,
01:46but it is kind of interesting that we may have
01:48S Pen support on the S21 Ultra.
01:51So of course there are some decent upgrades,
01:53but one of the questions and the comments
01:55I see a lot pop up on my channel
01:57is people saying, well, you know,
01:58I've got my Note 10 Plus or my S9,
02:00and I still don't see a reason to upgrade.
02:02You know, come back to me
02:03when there's something different, fundamentally.
02:06I still don't know if we're getting that.
02:08And that's only half the story
02:09because we've got these fairly, you know, modest upgrades,
02:12but there also seems to be a couple of downgrades
02:14with the new phones.
02:16For example, if we take the display,
02:17if the leaks are to be believed,
02:19the S21 and the Plus will actually just have a full HD
02:22rather than quad HD screen,
02:24which isn't the end of the world,
02:26but it is technically a downgrade from the S20 series.
02:29It also looks like we're losing micro SD card support.
02:32We're not gonna get a charger in the box,
02:33which again, environmentally friendly, yes, great,
02:36but that means you probably have to pay extra yourself
02:39if you want the sort of latest, best, fast charger.
02:42And it also looks like both the S21 and the Plus
02:44will have the slightly cheaper feeling
02:46glastic polycarbonate body
02:48rather than the sort of proper glass
02:50that you get on the higher end models.
02:51So it all comes down to pricing,
02:53but I don't know if there's anything
02:54that leaps off the page
02:56that's gonna make me wanna run out and buy an S21.
02:59I'm not sure if you saw it,
02:59but Dave from Dave2D made a really good video
03:02a couple of days ago on the S21,
03:04talking, well, ranting a little bit
03:06about the 1080p resolution,
03:08and also suggesting that perhaps Samsung is to some extent,
03:11maybe even sidelining the S series
03:14so that then there's a bigger differential
03:16and more reason to upgrade
03:17to a fancy flipping or folding phone
03:20with so much competition
03:21in the rectangular glass smartphone category
03:24that what's gonna make them stand out
03:26are these different form factors.
03:28And I think the other thing that stands out
03:29is while the S21 will no doubt be a fantastic phone,
03:32and as I say, a great benchmark
03:34to compare all the other phones coming out this year,
03:36looking at the quality of the phones,
03:38the affordable budget phones
03:39that we saw at the end of 2020,
03:41what you could get for two, three, 400 pounds or dollars
03:45is insane.
03:46I think 2020 for me was really the year
03:48of the resurgence of the good budget affordable phone.
03:52Why would someone go out and spend a grand or 800 pounds
03:56on a phone that's marginally better?
03:58And the truth is a lot of the best features
04:00that might actually tempt you to upgrade
04:02are exclusive to the super expensive S21 Ultra.
04:06The glass body, the adaptive refresh screen,
04:09which saves battery, the Quad HD resolution,
04:12and also the option for Quad HD and 120 Hertz
04:14finally at the same time,
04:16but again, only on the Ultra.
04:17That periscope zoom, the micro SD, S Pen support.
04:21It's frustrating that you'll have to pay
04:23around 1,200 pounds or so to get all those extras.
04:26So what was the point of this video?
04:28Well, I don't know really,
04:30I just like talking to you guys about phones,
04:32but I guess it's kind of managing expectations for the S21.
04:35There's nothing that really jumps out at me
04:37as being a must have new feature.
04:39Most of the good stuff is exclusive to the Ultra,
04:42and I think for a lot of people,
04:43something like the current S20 FE
04:46may end up being a better value choice,
04:48especially if we see it on sale.
04:50However, the good news is that we don't have to wait long
04:52until we find out everything.
04:54Samsung will unveil it at their Galaxy Unpacked event,
04:57and I'll have a hands-on first impressions video
04:59either that day or very soon afterwards.
