00:00Hey guys, I'm Tom the Tech Chap, and this is the brand new Oppo Find X5 Pro.
00:14So there's a whole bunch of upgrades with this.
00:16New processor, bigger battery, new camera tech, including some pretty incredible low-light video actually.
00:23But straight away, you can see they've evolved that curvy camera bump design along with this new ceramic white body.
00:31Now in the box, we have the usual gubbins, including this protective case, some paperwork, a SIM ejector tool,
00:38USB-C cable for charging or transferring data or whatever you fancy.
00:42And this guy, this is actually pretty important.
00:45This is the new 80-watt SuperVOOC charger, which is actually 15 watts more than last year's X3 Pro.
00:52And the very first thing you notice when you pick this up is next to something like the Galaxy S21 or S22 or iPhone 13 Pro Max,
01:00this feels a lot more comfortable to hold.
01:03It's thinner, lighter, we have these rounded corners, and there's also a very slight curve to the screen.
01:09It's a classic feels-good-in-the-hand, as the cliche goes.
01:13Although bringing in last year's X3 Pro, from the front, it is kind of hard to tell them apart.
01:19The big change is on the back. Glass is out, ceramic is in.
01:23Now this comes in either black or white, like I have here, and you can see it's a little bit glossy,
01:28and yet even with my mucky little paws all over it, it's not picking up fingerprints or smudges.
01:34Oppo say it's actually more scratch-resistant and also better at dissipating heat than regular glass.
01:39And then at the top here, we have the smooth camera bump, which now has a 75-degree rounded edge.
01:45So even more than last year, this just really blends seamlessly into the body.
01:49It's unique and it does feel really nice.
01:52They've also upgraded this crater design for the camera lenses, which are slightly recessed in the body.
01:58It's such a simple but effective way of keeping the lenses protected.
02:02So, 6.7-inch screen, Gorilla Glass Victus now protecting the front, corner 32-megapixel hole-punch selfie,
02:09stereo speakers, dual-SIM, 5G of course, although no microSD here.
02:14And we also have an optical fingerprint reader in the screen, which they've actually moved up a little bit higher,
02:19so it's easier to reach with your thumb.
02:21But I think the most impressive thing about this design is that despite being just 8.5 mil thick,
02:26it really is quite thin.
02:27They have somehow, possibly by magic or possibly by using a new dual-cell battery design,
02:32they've squeezed in a 5,000 mAh battery into this, up from 4,500 on last year's X3 Pro.
02:38I do need to spend a little bit more time with this before I can give a definitive answer on battery life,
02:43but on paper, it's a decent upgrade and we have faster charging.
02:47The 80-watt Super VOOC charger gives you 50% in just 12 minutes, if you prefer.
02:52We also now have 50-watt Air VOOC charging, if you use one of Oppo's compatible stands,
02:57which will fully top up the phone in just 47 minutes.
03:00Plus, we also have 10-watt reverse wireless charging for topping up other devices.
03:05Okay, let's talk specs.
03:07And the X5 Pro comes with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, 8 or 12 gigs of RAM,
03:12although that can be boosted by a further 7 gigs from your storage,
03:15which itself comes in either 128 or 256 gig flavours.
03:19The only slightly peculiar omission here is the lack of Wi-Fi 6e support.
03:23This is still just Wi-Fi 6.
03:25But the big question, how fast is this?
03:28And is it really that much of an upgrade over last year's X3 Pro with a Snapdragon 888,
03:34also 12 gigs of RAM?
03:35Well, let's find out.
03:37Well, bear in mind this is a pre-release device,
03:39but in the Antutu benchmark, we're looking at a solid 13% boost in performance.
03:44But then, in the 20-minute 3DMark stress test,
03:47there's a whopping 65% jump between their best scores,
03:51although this does drop down to 23% when comparing their lowest scores,
03:55but it is still a good deal faster, which will be very welcome news if you're a gamer.
04:01But wait, hold your horses, because this has a bit of a trick up its sleeve.
04:06Sleeve? Sleeve.
04:07A secret weapon, if you will.
04:09This.
04:10The Mary Silicon X Imaging NPU.
04:13Oppo have developed their own hardware to work alongside the Snapdragon chip's ISP
04:19to boost the AI smarts of the camera, with a particular focus on low-light video.
04:24But first, let's take a step back and talk about this camera setup.
04:28And it's a triple lens system.
04:30Wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto.
04:32And like its predecessor, the X5 Pro's wide and ultra-wide lenses
04:36are nearly identical.
04:38Same 50-megapixel resolution, same IMX 766 sensor,
04:42just slightly different apertures.
04:44And I mean, switching between lenses, particularly when you're filming video,
04:48is pretty seamless.
04:49Then we have the 13-megapixel telephoto, which gives us a 2x optical zoom.
04:54And then finally, up front, there's a 32-megapixel selfie camera.
04:58This actually uses a custom IMX 709 sensor
05:01and uses RGBW pixels to bring in more light.
05:04And you can actually switch the field of view yourself,
05:06or it will do it automatically when it detects more subjects in the frame.
05:10But there is something missing, actually, compared to this guy.
05:14And that is the 3-megapixel microscope lens.
05:17It was such a unique feature, and although a little unweirdly to use,
05:21and maybe, to be fair, I didn't really use it much beyond my initial review,
05:24it was cool to get these kind of images from your phone.
05:27Quick caveat, this is a pre-release model,
05:29and future updates are expected to improve the camera.
05:33But first impressions, this is a big step up.
05:36The X5 Pro is sharper and more detailed.
05:39Even skin tones and contrast are much improved.
05:42So to be honest, I didn't really expect this kind of jump in quality year on year.
05:47But actually, it's video, particularly low-light video,
05:50where the X5 Pro has really stepped up its game.
05:53The MAUI Silicon X NPU powers the AI noise reduction
05:57and also gives us a four-fold increase in the dynamic range it can capture
06:01versus the X3 Pro, which helps to reduce noise
06:04while preserving finer detail, color accuracy, and white balance.
06:08And this is all done automatically,
06:10when the camera detects the lighting is around 20 lux,
06:13so when you're out and about at night or in a dimly-lit environment,
06:16it'll go into ultra-low-light video mode.
06:19Now take all that and add in a new industry-first
06:22SLR-level 5-axis image stabilization to keep everything nice and smooth,
06:27a partnership with Hasselblad,
06:29which adds their natural color calibration to the Pro camera mode
06:32and also gives us the Hasselblad aesthetic to the camera app,
06:35a nostalgic X-Pan mode,
06:37which replicates the negative photo effect before it's processed,
06:40and also three unique photography styles.
06:43And of course, just like its predecessor, the X3 Pro,
06:46you can still take photos in 10-bit
06:48and then view them back natively in all their 1 billion color glory
06:52on the 10-bit screen.
06:54Speaking of which, let's talk about this screen,
06:57because it's a familiar 6.7-inch Quad HD Plus AMOLED display
07:01with a 120Hz refresh rate.
07:03It is using an LTPO panel,
07:05so the refresh can dynamically adjust between 1 and 120Hz.
07:09Brightness peaks at 1300 nits when you're watching HDR content
07:13and in direct sunlight and it's sort of maxing out.
07:15But this is where things get interesting,
07:17because another industry-first on the X5 Pro
07:19is that Oppo's engineers have color calibrated the screen
07:22at both 500 nits and 100 nits.
07:26Most phones are just calibrated to 500,
07:28which means the colors are more accurate and consistent
07:31even when you have the screen dimmed.
07:33And in fact, there is 8192 levels of brightness,
07:37so you get really fine control, particularly with lower brightness.
07:41Now, being an Oppo phone, this runs ColorOS.
07:44I am on the latest 12.1 version, and that's on top of Android 12.
07:48My only criticism here is that there is a fair amount of bloatware.
07:52I've had to hide or uninstall quite a few apps.
07:55But aside from that, it's fast, there's a ton of customization options,
07:58I also love the wallpapers you get on Oppo phones,
08:01and actually you can apply the wallpaper's colors
08:03to the whole system UI and icons.
08:06So obviously the X5 Pro has some pretty strong competition.
08:09But the combination of this unique, very comfortable design,
08:12top-notch specs, a very impressive camera,
08:15a lovely screen, a bigger battery with faster charging,
08:18altogether this is a solid upgrade and definitely worth considering.
08:23Now, pricing is TBC as I'm recording this,
08:26and that obviously is a big factor,
08:28but I will leave links below so you can check this out
08:30and also update you with final pricing when I get it.
08:33But what do you reckon? A worthy upgrade?
