00:00Really pleased, very professional performance I thought, a very thorough performance, obviously a lot of noise about two gold leads.
00:09I thought we delivered a very strong performance defensively today to make sure we looked after that lead.
00:14Has that been a part of the training?
00:22Well, yeah, I mean, certainly not so much work on the training pitch, but reminders of games when, you know, we have seen games through.
00:29We've seen them through with our professionalism, seen them through with our effort, work ethic and also the shape of the team.
00:34And I thought that was all on show today to make sure we saw that game through.
00:37I agree, I spoke to the players after and I said, look, with all due respect, this club's done an amazing thing getting to where it's got to,
00:50but they haven't got our level of experience. I thought that was good because I thought, I agree, I thought we showed that today,
00:55the way of managing the game in different ways, you know, defensively with the ball, still looking effective, still creating chances,
01:02and find that nice balance and that work's got to continue.
01:05You know, and it's like I say, it's no disrespect that he's done amazing.
01:08They're fighting for everything, which they need to do, of course.
01:10I've done that with another team and it's difficult.
01:13But I thought we showed a bit of authority today with our performance all round.
01:20Yeah, I mean, you know, Keno's had a lot of question marks over him and we all, by the way, you know,
01:26the club has a high demand and the fans have a high demand.
01:28But Keno, to be fair to him, you know, what people forget is he's out there every day.
01:31He trains every day. He's played through all the question marks.
01:34Played recently at Leicester with a really bad dead leg, might have suffered.
01:37Other players might have suffered and not made it.
01:39And he only deserved to stay in the team, I thought, and I kept him in.
01:42Gerrard's close to being fit and possibly could have played.
01:45But I feel he needs another week's training as well to make sure that his body's right.
01:49But I thought Keno's delivered a very good performance today and had an excellent goal.
01:52But he's a very good finisher.
01:57Illness. Yeah, illness.
01:58Unfortunately, we've had a bit of that in the camp and it was too much for him to get down here.
02:02He went down with it Thursday.
02:04Beto's had a bit of illness as well, but he managed to make it.
02:19No, I just said to him when he went away in the summer, I said,
02:21look, it's not a done deal that, you know, the centre-halves play every game.
02:25I said, of course I've been loyal to the ones last season
02:27because I thought they were excellent for a large part of the season.
02:29But I said, you know, come back fit, which he did,
02:32fitter than I suggest or well fit as I remember him.
02:35And I thought he'd worked really hard in pre-season.
02:37I thought all pre-season, actually, during the pre-season games, he's a solid performer.
02:42He didn't hardly miss any.
02:43Well, he got one knock, I think, and missed a game or came off at Preston when we looked after him.
02:48And I think he's earning the right to play and that's all you can ask a player, you know.
02:52It's not a given you play, but you want him to earn the right.
02:54You want him to put your doubt in your mind in the right way.
02:57And I think he continues to do that.
02:58But I think the team as a whole today, both in attack and defence,
03:02I thought it was a very balanced performance and I was very pleased with it.
03:11Yeah, I mean, Idrissa will get fitter and sharper because he's missed chunks of training.
03:15He's missed a few games.
03:17And it's harsh on Manga.
03:19I think Manga's done well, but obviously Idrissa understands what we do,
03:22what the team does and his experience in the Premier League.
03:24I thought he played well today.
03:26Miko will get stronger and fitter.
03:28As regards, when I say that, I mean Premier League fit and sharp.
03:30It's a different thing.
03:31You know, you get all the training, but we all know when you're getting out there playing
03:34them Premier League games, it gives that extra.
03:36I thought Youngie was excellent again today.
03:38You know, when he has his question, people question him, but that's the way it goes.
03:41I said recently he's a mature professional.
03:43He understands that you get questioned, but his mentality stays firm.
03:48Yeah, I made a bit of a call on that, to be fair to him.
03:52He was chomping at the bit, but the last game we put him in,
03:55maybe I felt just on the cusp of being a bit quick.
03:57He was fine for the game and did very well.
03:59But then, of course, he got injured the next week.
04:01So this one, I thought he's only literally trained Thursday, Friday.
04:04I went, hang on a minute.
04:05We've got to be careful here.
04:06So I left him so he could do work at the training ground and then continue to have a four-week
04:10training the next week.
04:11And then hopefully his body's more ready for when he's needed or when he's ready to play.
04:15And it keeps him.
04:16No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
04:18It was my decision.
04:19My call.
04:30One thing for sure, the manager will tell you.
04:32It's a conundrum at times picking a team, but we need a more fair.
04:36And you want that combative element.
04:37You know, you want everyone chomping to play.
04:39The biggest thing that does that is competition.
04:41You know, not just competition in front of you, playing the opposition,
04:44but in training, you know, that competitive element,
04:46which is like, am I going to get the shirt and that feeling?
04:48There's always someone breathing down your neck.
04:50I think when you get that feeling, it often adds to the power of a group
04:54and their performances.
04:55So we want that across the board, not just in centre-half positions,
04:58because I think we've got four very good ones, but we want it across the board.
05:01Of course, there's limitations that financially, but in the ideal world,
05:05you want a squad that are all competing at all given moments.
05:15I've been on that side, don't forget.
05:18I've been with a team that's been promoted.
05:20You know, they get three hits at the beginning because the noise is positive.
05:24All the fans are positive.
05:25Everyone's positive.
05:26The media are positive because they're all just saying, yeah, let's see how they go.
05:28I'm rightly so, by the way.
05:29It's a tough division.
05:30It's hard to breach that gap and jump.
05:32They spend a lot of money here.
05:34You have to know what you're going to do.
05:36There's no one comes cheap anymore.
05:38And they've tried to do that.
05:40They're still working.
05:41You know, they're still fighting.
05:42They're still doing everything they can.
05:43They're still doing everything they can to win games.
05:45It's just a tough challenge.
05:46So, I have massive respect for these teams.
05:48You know, I've been asking lower-down teams.
05:50I've been asking Cup games, you know, is that embarrassing?
05:52I said, absolutely not.
05:53I'd never consider myself too embarrassed.
05:54Another team, what's that all about?
05:56They're a competitive team.
05:57Everyone has the right to win a game.
05:58So, we've done that today, and we've got to continue doing that.
