Key players in Taiwan's public and private sectors have gathered in central Taichung City to discuss climate governance at the fourth annual Taiwan Climate Action Expo. Taiwan has been barred from the U.N. climate change conference, also known as COP, but this event provides a platform for the country's leaders to contribute to climate action.

00:00Excluded from UN-organized environmental events, Taiwan has set out to create a version of
00:05its own, the Taiwan Climate Action Expo.
00:09In its fourth year, it's already become one of the country's biggest summits on ecology.
00:14And this year, the National Museum of Natural Science here in Taichung is hosting.
00:19This summit is being held just one month ahead of the UN's Climate Change Conference in
00:23Azerbaijan, also known as the Conference of Parties, or COP.
00:28With Taiwan barred from attending due to diplomatic pressure from Beijing, this expo has been
00:33billed Taiwan's version of COP.
00:36And government ministers here at the conference say the country has a lot of expertise to
00:40offer.
00:41The COP in Taiwan is just one of our expectations.

01:33The summit's attendees showcased cutting-edge technology and research in areas like electric
01:39vehicles, recycling, carbon capture, and water treatment, expertise that Taiwan can use to
01:48reach its climate goals.
01:51The country continues to aim for net-zero emissions by 2050.
01:55But over 80 percent of the country's energy still comes from fossil fuels.
02:00And the country's growing multi-billion-dollar tech and manufacturing sectors continue to
02:05threaten the environment and deplete natural resources like fresh water.
02:10Taiwan may not be able to take part in next month's COP in Azerbaijan, but no one is stopping
02:15it from holding its own and to find ways to help contribute to the global effort, starting
02:20first at home.
