00:30Hey, what's up?
00:35MKBHD here.
00:36Welcome back to a brand new video and we got a little bit of an exclusive for you today,
00:40which are always fun.
00:41Now, look, we're always talking about new pieces of tech on this channel, but you got
00:45to take a step back sometimes and think and just remember how smart some of the AI in
00:51this tech is getting.
00:52Like we just saw the Boston Dynamics robot dog and even their newest packaging robot.
00:58But this stuff, this is next level.
01:00So today I'm reviewing the most advanced tech I've looked at yet on this channel.
01:04I'm reviewing the newest edition Mac one of one colorway, which is, it's kind of this
01:10unique thing, like one of the remax from that last dope tech video where every single one
01:14is different.
01:15This is a one of one, but it's super cool.
01:18Let's get into it.
01:20So we've had this new Mac at the studio through its development for a couple of years now
01:24through several software updates.
01:25We've actually had a pretty big hand in the development of it and we've put it through
01:29its paces, tested the hardware, the software and the features, and there's a lot to it.
01:34So if you want the lucky people actually considering getting this model or one like it, well then
01:39this video is for you.
01:40So actually when we first got the Mac here at the studio, it was lightly used.
01:44It wasn't original.
01:45It didn't have the original packaging.
01:47So we didn't get to do an on-camera unboxing, but that's fine.
01:51When you first get them, they actually have way less features and then you sort of get
01:54to evolve them over time.
01:56So first of all, basic specs.
01:58This is the mid-size version in the mocha cream color, about 30 pounds.
02:02Fun fact too, every unit sold is a unique colorway, like I said, and a lot of them look
02:07like pretty similar, but there was lots of small details on each unit that will be just
02:11a little bit different and appreciated by the person who gets it.
02:14Then this model has a soft touch finish that actually slowly changes over time.
02:18And overall I'd say build quality is solid, sturdy.
02:21It's pretty easy to wash, although I'd recommend taking it to a certified cleaner.
02:25They usually do a better job.
02:26So the Mac didn't come with any sort of a screen protector or case or bumpers or anything
02:31like that, but I've generally found you don't actually need one.
02:34They're pretty sturdy and well-built without one.
02:36But if you do get one, just know that they're a pretty rough sizing model.
02:41It's not the same exact cutouts for every single one, but if you get one, just make
02:45sure yours doesn't cover the ventilation system at the front or the exhaust system at the
02:50back.
02:52There's a bunch of sensors up at the front and this is where the action happens.
02:55So there is dual monochrome sensors with autofocus assist by this middle sensor that the manufacturer
03:01calls a snout sensor, but it seems to operate the exact same way that laser autofocus does,
03:07meaning it just helps the main sensors.
03:09So like if you covered it up, it would still work.
03:12It could still take in the surroundings, but it's kind of just like the same as laser autofocus.
03:17Also there's a pair of microphones, one on either side for audio processing for voice
03:21commands.
03:22So all these sensors put together help the Mac to navigate surroundings and not bump
03:26into things as it moves around its environment.
03:28So I just want to say battery life is okay, but it's not amazing.
03:32It's really not great.
03:33A lot of these new technologies we give a pass because they're so novel and so cool
03:37that we'll focus on battery life in later generations.
03:41This one you need to charge by the end of the day, every time.
03:46The way you charge isn't necessarily how you'd expect.
03:49There is no USB port.
03:50I looked, trust me.
03:52But there are a bunch of other ways to potentially charge up.
03:55So it's got fast charging in the form of this energy transfer with any number of first party
03:59made for Mac materials.
04:00And they're great.
04:01You can literally just buy a box of them.
04:03But of course there are a bunch of other materials that they say you're not supposed to power
04:07it with, but if you're in a pinch, they'll technically still work.
04:11They're just not quite as efficient.
04:13Probably the safest way to power the Mac is the optional wireless charging pad.
04:17It doesn't come with this, but I would highly recommend it.
04:20It's pretty convenient for charging up overnight.
04:23And the software even has this sweet built-in auto docking feature where it automatically
04:27returns to the charging pad when the battery gets low and the sensors turn off, the software
04:32goes to sleep.
04:33It's just kind of this slower overnight trickle charge, but it's a stable one.
04:36So the rest of the software is pretty solid.
04:39From what I gather, they're all programmed just a little bit differently.
04:41This one's programmed with the best friend security guard features, uh, slightly different
04:47for every model, but it works.
04:50So it's programmed to identify a few best friends and then guard those best friends
04:54from outside threats.
04:55So when we got it into the studio, all the AI and the sensors immediately looked over
04:59the environment, identified the entryways and just went into protection mode.
05:03So I guess that's how it delivers out the box and it's very consistent.
05:06Every delivery, every visitor, every person walking past the door, alarm system, max volume.
05:16But everything else runs as you might expect through voice controls, kind of like any other
05:20piece of tech probably would in 2021.
05:23So it's got these mics on either side and it's got the trigger phrase.
05:26So you just say, Hey Mac, get them.
05:30And it knows the trigger phrase and it's the processing time has gotten shorter over the
05:33years through software updates, which is dope.
05:36But there are some quirks.
05:37So first of all, it can take a while to install new programs.
05:41Sometimes days, sometimes weeks, especially games.
05:44And sometimes you have to reinstall them a few times before they work.
05:46But eventually the AI gets it.
05:48And there is this weird bug where the fetch game force quits in the middle of the game
05:52for no reason.
05:53Not sure why, but maybe that can be fixed through a patch.
05:55Then Mac also has a high performance sport mode where everything just flies.
06:00But if you're going to use that mode, just know you're going to be cruising through the
06:04battery.
06:05So you'll for sure have to charge at least once to make it through the end of the day
06:08after that.
06:09Still pretty worth it to use this mode every once in a while because the Mac is way more
06:13enjoyable to own when you got this mode.
06:15But most of all, I think future versions are going to want to work on this sensor layout.
06:20I mean, the audio is pretty great and visual pickup is nice, but I feel like there's so
06:25much data going in that the OS isn't quite processing at all.
06:30Maybe it just needs more RAM.
06:32I guess.
06:33Don't we all?
06:34But like sometimes the snout sensor will lock onto one thing and then throw off the whole
06:37rest of the autofocus system.
06:39Sometimes if you give it the wrong type of energy too many times, the AI learns and starts
06:44thinking it's seeing energy all over the place through those sensors.
06:47And it basically prioritizes all those false positives over everything else, trying to
06:52keep its battery full.
06:53Sometimes you'll give it a single voice command through the triggers and it will just blast
06:57through a series of commands like there's some sort of a script loop in the software.
07:02And it can be a lot.
07:03Now when it does run hot, there is an active cooling system up front, like I mentioned,
07:07and it does make a little bit of noise.
07:09Sometimes usually not too bad in this particular model.
07:11Some other models are way noisier and might expel a little bit of water.
07:15But other than that, it's fine.
07:17It might just sound a little weird if you're not expecting it, but it's fine.
07:21But I got to say the best friend mode is flawless.
07:24Some would argue it's the least important mode.
07:26I'd argue it's the most important.
07:28It can keep you company, hang out with you.
07:31And I'd actually say this mode is flawless.
07:33Some people have reservations about an AI keeping them company.
07:37I think this one's great.
07:38And if you're ever in doubt that the system isn't running smoothly, that huge slider on
07:42the back acts as a digital wellbeing indicator.
07:44So basically the faster it's moving, the happier that AI is.
07:49I'm no expert like we rate dogs, but I'd like to think Mac is at least an 11 out of 10.
07:54So that's been it.
07:55Thanks for watching.
07:56Happy April Fool's Day.
07:57In case you haven't looked at the date below yet, this has been the review of Mac that
08:02everyone's wanted for so long.
08:04Yes, that's its actual name.
08:06This is your annual reminder not to take anything you read on the internet today too seriously.
08:12Catch you guys in the next one.
08:13Peace.
08:14Hey, what's up?
08:15MKBHD here.
08:16And yeah, that's probably fine.
08:20If you do get one, don't cover the ventilation, there's like hair falling.
08:26Processing for voice commands.
08:30You set a trigger phrase.
08:32So this one's, hey Mac, go get that.
08:36So this one's got a trigger phrase.
08:38So this one's, hey Mac, go get that.
08:41So this one's got a trigger phrase.
08:43So this one's, hey Mac, go get that.
08:47So this one's got a trigger phrase.
08:49So you just say, hey Mac, get him, get him.
08:51So first of all, it can take a while to install.
08:56You're back.
08:57You're back.
08:58Okay.
