00:00Hey, what's up guys, MKBHD here, and welcome to the dream phone 2019.
00:10So this is something I thought a lot about.
00:12There is no perfect phone, there never has been, and even with tech getting better and
00:16better and amazing phones out now, it kind of feels like there never will be.
00:20But it's always been sort of fun to speculate, what if you could Frankenstein together the
00:25best possible version of a phone with all the available parts and bleeding edge tech?
00:30What would that look like?
00:31Last time I made a video about my dream phone was 2014, so five years ago, baby Marquez
00:36speculating about the best tech available and what the most amazing phone would look
00:41like.
00:42And it looked like this.
00:43You know, I was asking for a Snapdragon 805, three gigabytes of RAM, 128 gigs of storage
00:48and a 3,500 milliamp hour battery in my dream phone.
00:52So clearly times have changed.
00:53I don't know about the doubling of every two years as Moore's law suggests, but things
00:58have clearly taken major strides since those lofty goals.
01:02So this is my new look at a concept for a dream phone 2019, plus some renders to go
01:08with it.
01:09Now, in all honesty, I'm not too picky.
01:10Like I already really like some of the phones we already have that I've talked about during
01:13the year.
01:14I already tweeted like my simplified version of the dream phone would be something like
01:19one plus seven pro basically with all the specs and the 90 Hertz display and the OS
01:23and everything with the P30 pros battery and the pixels camera like that would already
01:28be amazing, but this is the dream phone.
01:31So we can really dream big and we can be more specific since we already know the possibility
01:36of it happening is near zero.
01:38So that's exactly what I'm going to do.
01:39So the specs now specs are less important than they used to be.
01:43But for the sake of getting them at the bleeding edge, I'll start off by taking the chip from
01:47the iPhone 10 S, the A12 bionic is incredible and as great as the snapdragon 855 is obviously
01:53the A12 bionic is the champ as far as power.
01:56So I'll take that, but then I will take the rest of the specs from the fastest phone I've
02:00ever used, which is the one plus seven pro, which means 12 gigs of super fast Ram and
02:07the UFS 3.0 flash storage and sent this the dream phone.
02:11It'll all just magically work together.
02:12And then the amount of storage is actually less important than it's ever been because
02:16of all this cloud stuff.
02:17Like I feel like I could actually be fine today with 128 gig phone, actually download
02:22fun fact, my entire Spotify library offline in the highest quality possible.
02:27Every time I get a new phone just for flights and that's less than a hundred gigs.
02:30So I could be fine with one 28, but for the hell of it, since it's the dream phone and
02:34we got that UFS 3.0, just give me a terabyte of flash storage.
02:38So that's the internals.
02:40Then let's get to the looks, the design, the hardware.
02:45So I'd have a very clean, minimal aesthetic for the hardware and the overarching theme
02:50would be as you guessed, matte black.
02:53And then, you know, with just a little bit of red accents and some carbon fiber.
02:56So upfront I would take the display from the one plus seven pro, but modify it a little
03:01bit, taking it to the next level.
03:02Like that's clearly already a great panel, but give me 120 Hertz OLED this time, still
03:081440 P and also give me the brightness of Samsung's panels and make it a little bit
03:14smaller.
03:15I've got the one plus seven pros full screen already, of course, but if I had my way, it
03:18would be that little bit brighter outdoors, like the Samsung screens, it would have a
03:23little bit less rounded corners as well.
03:25And it would be a little bit smaller.
03:26So I'd say a six inch 1440 P 120 Hertz OLED.
03:30Now a display like that needs a battery champion, as we know.
03:34So this is a phone that's fully allowed to be a couple extra millimeters thicker, all
03:37the better to get rid of a camera bump.
03:39I'm cool with this phone having a little bit extra space to fit the dream 4,500 milliamp
03:45hour battery.
03:46So give me the, give me the battery from the red hydrogen, but also with the warp charging
03:51of the one plus seven pro, that'd be crazy.
03:53And you can see in this design, it's all matte black with a slot of carbon fiber down the
03:57side, just for kicks.
03:59Give me a colored power button, of course, in red thin bezels, as you can see, oh, and
04:04yes, I'm, I'm keeping front facing speakers.
04:07And then also since I think glass backs are kind of a bit overrated.
04:10And since I've also been really impressed recently with plastics, the matte black on
04:15this phone can be polycarbonate.
04:17So when you drop, it won't shatter.
04:19It's all matte black and it can also now enable wireless charging.
04:22Now I could go for the fully all screen bezel-less dream phone that the world seems to be moving
04:29towards, but I don't think that's my dream phone right now, specifically because I still
04:33like a good pair of front facing speakers and the piezoelectric front facing behind
04:39the glass speakers.
04:40They're okay for an earpiece, but they're just not cutting it for the big sound that
04:43I want.
04:44So my dream phone would still have a little top slot, little bottom slot, front facing
04:49stereo speakers.
04:50And also, yes, I'd keep that headphone jack because yes, while I have moved on to not
04:54really needing it anymore, uh, every once in a while, it's convenient just to have one.
04:58So throw a quality DAC behind that and of course USB type C.
05:01And then also that speaker slot up top gives me room for real front facing cameras.
05:06So no, no notch needed, no hole punch, no crazy mechanisms, no pop-ups that don't make
05:11it water resistant.
05:12This can be a water resistant phone with real front facing cameras.
05:16And I have two of them.
05:17I would take both the front facing cameras from the Pixel 3, the normal and the wide
05:22angle.
05:23They're incredible quality of course.
05:25And I love having quality front facing cameras.
05:26So those are your speakers and your cameras.
05:28And speaking of cameras, you may have noticed the dual rear facing cameras on the back of
05:33the phone.
05:34And I've spoken on this before, but I would take the Pixel 3's photo quality from the
05:38cameras and the iPhone's video quality.
05:42It's the best of both worlds.
05:43Pixel 3 does an incredible job with just a single lens for images, but I would actually
05:47love to see a second lens with the same quality hardware for amazing wide angle shots.
05:54And since again, it's my impossible dream phone, both of these are optically stabilized
05:58and they can both do iPhone quality video.
06:00And then to top it all off, my one bleeding edge wish is an under display fingerprint
06:05reader that is the entire bottom half of the display.
06:09So no more like fidgety having to get it just right and lifting up your finger too fast.
06:13You just put your finger anywhere on the bottom half and it unlocks super fast.
06:18And then toss in Oxygen OS or stock Android, honestly, either way would be fine with me.
06:22I think there's a couple of Pixel specific features that I'd want, like the now playing
06:25song ID.
06:26That's pretty sweet.
06:27And call screening.
06:29So it would definitely have those things.
06:31And just for kicks, iMessage for Android, because why not?
06:34But generally I've been really happy with the high refresh rate, clean Android experience.
06:38Then wrap it all up in a nice low Pocophone type of price.
06:42And I think that's my Frankenstein of a dream phone for 2019.
06:47Am I missing anything?
06:49Again, I know a phone like this doesn't exist, couldn't exist.
06:52But I also know that, you know, making my voice heard about a dream like this can possibly
06:58push the dream just a little bit closer to reality.
07:01So there you have it.
07:02Also, this video was a collab with Concept Creator, super skilled with the sick renders
07:06to help visualize the phone that we were talking about in this video.
07:09So go subscribe to his channel if you want to see more stuff like that.
07:12But that's been it.
07:13That's my dream phone.
07:14What would your dream phone be?
07:16Let me know in the comments below.
07:18Either way.
07:19Thanks for watching.
07:20Catch you guys in the next one.
07:22Peace.
