00:00So yeah, this smartwatch is $69, but, but before you type it, is it though?
00:17Is it really that nice?
00:18Is it that good?
00:19I feel like we should define good first because going into this, I was thinking just the fact
00:22that you can get a fully functioning smartwatch for $69 in 2023, just that by itself on its
00:27face was kind of amazing because we live in a world where you can easily spend hundreds
00:31and hundreds of dollars on a smartwatch, but clearly there's a wide spectrum of what these
00:34things can be capable of.
00:36So this one, just the simple stuff, right?
00:39Just the basics, the time, notifications, step counter, heart rate, calorie counter,
00:45sleep tracking, just, just on its face, that's good enough for 95% of people, right?
00:50Well, let's just start with the basics here.
00:52This is a square smartwatch.
00:55It's got this orange Silicon band that comes in the box and it feels surprisingly similar
00:59to any other smartwatch band.
01:00And then it's got a 1.96 inch diagonal display.
01:03The color is metallic gray, but the material here is definitely not nearly as metallic.
01:10It does say aluminum alloy on their site, but if you didn't tell me that just holding
01:14it, I would swear this is a hundred percent made of plastic on the outside, but you know,
01:17at least it's coated in a sort of a matte finish on the back part that's touching your
01:20wrist around the heart rate sensors.
01:23Then there's some engravings with a bunch of texts in the nothing font, like the model
01:26number and the headquarters location, which happens to be cheap side London, which is
01:32very appropriate.
01:33Honestly, it doesn't look or feel terrible, but it just, it clearly has all of the obvious
01:37shortcuts of a cheap product.
01:39The more you look closely at it, you know, the bezels are thick and also weirdly uneven
01:43all the way around.
01:45There is no rotating dial, just a single shallow, cheap feeling button right above the small
01:49tinny speaker to the side and no fancy puck to charge just USB-A to dual pin cable that
01:55comes in the box.
01:56It magnetizes to the back, which in hindsight, I guess is just as convenient as a fancy puck,
02:00but you know, a little less elegant looking, but I guess the key here is all of it works
02:05and it's solid.
02:06Like the brightness outside, it gets up to 600 nits.
02:09There's no auto brightness though, so you got to change brightness manually like this,
02:13but Hey, at its max, it's very good indoors at least.
02:16Then the whole thing is IP68 water and dust resistant, which is first of all, great if
02:21you want to go out and sweat in it or go out in the rain, but also wasn't there a long
02:26period of time where OnePlus and nothing products didn't get IP certified because it costs too
02:30much extra, but now the CMF watch has it, but then it all works with the CMF watch app
02:35on your phone, which is where all the data gets sent via Bluetooth.
02:38So honestly, there's not too many different clever ways to design a watch UI.
02:43So, you know, if you get a smart watch, if you've used one before, you'll basically already
02:47know how to use this one.
02:48So your watch face is your starting point, and then you can swipe through fitness data,
02:52which looks surprisingly like Apple watch rings.
02:55It's got your heart rate history for the past 24 hours.
02:57The weather is there in that simple dot matrix way, plus sleep time.
03:01If you use it to track sleep, then a single press on that plastic feeling button will
03:05take you to your app list, which you can view as a grid or as a list.
03:08And then there's a good amount of apps in here that just come on the watch.
03:11So an exercise app that has a ton of different exercises, the blood oxygen app, which gives
03:16you your measurements whenever you want.
03:17You've also got a phone call app and yes, you can receive phone calls on the watch and
03:21that tinny little speaker will crank out audio as loud as it can to facilitate a real conversation.
03:27There's also a music app, which gives you just music controls for whenever something
03:30is playing on your phone.
03:32There's even a camera remote app, which it doesn't actually open the camera app on my
03:36phone or show a viewfinder preview.
03:39But when I do have the camera app open, the shutter button does actually work.
03:42So there's that.
03:43There's even a voice assistant app, which if you open it, basically just opens Google
03:46assistant on your phone and then uses the mics and speakers on the watch for you to
03:49interact with it.
03:50The find my phone app is hilarious though.
03:53It only works when the CMF app is open or running on the phone.
03:57So if you've just closed the app, it will just ask you to open the app on your phone,
04:01but you don't have your phone.
04:03But when you do actually open it, so it plays this max volume ringing sound, which will
04:08allow you to find the phone, which is pretty cool.
04:11As long as you've got that app open or have opened it recently.
04:14And I will say the UI on the watch itself, it feels like it's moving around pretty quickly
04:19and not too much waiting time to actually open or switch between these apps, mostly
04:23because they're very lightweight.
04:24Like this thing is basically just a Bluetooth accessory, pinging little controls on your
04:28phone and then it's got watch faces and the watch faces have a nice little variety.
04:32I think this one's probably my favorite with the orange theme and a secondhand moving slowly
04:37in a full circle down here.
04:38I feel like I'm pretty impressed.
04:40It's also very lightweight.
04:41Not that people always value lightweight in watches, but in this price range, they're
04:47pretty much all gonna be made of plastic.
04:48So you might as well lean into it.
04:50And this thing is super light.
04:51So if you're doing sports or just running around, it's yeah, it's kind of out of the
04:55way.
04:56And then because it's a Bluetooth accessory and a pretty generic one, you can use this
05:00actually with basically any Android phone.
05:02So you just grab the Play Store app, which has a 3.1 stars and it does have some connection
05:08issues occasionally for me, but even that sort of availability, at least on any Android
05:12phone is better than Apple can say about their own smartwatch.
05:15And it gives me all the basic info I'm looking for from heart rate history to workout summaries.
05:20Honestly, it's not so bad when it's working.
05:22So I'm also able to do sleep tracking since that only really requires the heart rate sensors,
05:27but I also continue to get that info from the sensors that are actually built into the
05:31mattress cover I use.
05:32At this point, I'm sure you've heard of Eight Sleep and the pod mattress cover that warms
05:36up and cools down each side of the bed independently, automatically.
05:39So that thing not only helps you sleep better by automatically changing the temperatures,
05:43but then it also monitors how you sleep.
05:44It's got the sensors inside and then delivers a report for you.
05:47So you just open the app every morning, you get this personalized report that shows you
05:50things like your heart rate variance, respiratory rate, you know, how your sleep stages panned
05:54out overnight.
05:55So I think I'm officially done wearing any wearables to sleep for any sleep tracking
06:00data just because this handles it all.
06:01Now, I've actually talked about them before and I saw a lot of your comments about Eight
06:04Sleep.
06:05And so I chatted with Eight Sleep about them and was able to get them to offer a little
06:09bit more functionality to people who are new, like first time signing up.
06:13So they'll actually now, no matter what your membership level, they will give you a free
06:17sleep report every six months.
06:19So that's not behind any sort of paywall.
06:21So thanks to Eight Sleep for sponsoring this video.
06:23I'm happy to report that they're also offering you guys the largest discount that they ever
06:27have.
06:28So if you want to check it out, feel free to check out the link in the description and
06:31use code MKBHD.
06:32So now that I'm not wearing it to sleep, I am able to charge the CMF watch every night.
06:37Like I said, it's got this little magnetic pin charger, technically not as pretty as
06:41those fancy wireless charging pucks, but honestly pretty close.
06:44And the battery life I've realized is really, really good because of how simple it is.
06:50Again, just a Bluetooth accessory, not a whole ton of processing power needed.
06:54On their site, they're claiming like 13 days of regular use.
06:57I don't know if I'm going to get that, but I was able to get three straight days easy,
07:02no problem.
07:03And I'm sure you could probably use power saver mode and get even more if you wanted
07:06to.
07:07So it's got better battery life than an Apple watch.
07:09But really the main thing that I learned when testing this watch is it turns out this is
07:13actually a pretty expensive watch in its segment.
07:18$69 is on the premium end for a very basic smartwatch.
07:25It's actually pretty common for the cheapest, most basic smartwatches to be in the $20 to
07:29$50 range.
07:31And you know, at that point, they're all more or less the same product.
07:34They're all a simple plasticky Bluetooth accessory with some slightly different designs.
07:38So this, the CMF watch pro is a slightly better package, slightly better design, slightly
07:46better looking version for a slight upcharge.
07:49Kind of the same way nothing is probably charging a little bit more than you would expect for
07:53a phone with the same specs, just because of the design and the nice stuff they do with
07:56it.
07:57That's, that's what this is too.
07:58And I bring up nothing because CMF is nothing's ultra budget sub-brand.
08:03And they actually do some other stuff like earphones, chargers, same deal, extremely
08:07cheap products, but just marked up a little bit for nice packaging and nice design.
08:12So here, I'll leave you with this, CMF in the industries typically stands for color
08:17material finish.
08:18It's the name of the company, but it's also what those letters stand for.
08:22And the CMF of this smartwatch is, it's very much still silverish fingerprinty technically
08:31metal, but feels kind of plasticky.
08:33But if you squint enough, this square kind of looks like an Apple watch ultra.
08:40And if that's your comparison point, then this thing is a total bargain.
08:44So I think that was what their real goal was.
08:46Yeah.
08:47If you want to get one of these things, you can, it is maybe a little more challenging
08:51to get it in the US.
08:53Maybe if you import it, spend a couple extra dollars, then you're competing with some other
08:56smartwatches, but it's an option, but now, you know, it exists the more, you know, thanks
09:02for watching.
09:03Catch you guys in the next one, peace.
