00:00:00There's only one way to determine the greatest super middleweight.
00:00:04Take the six best and have them face each other
00:00:07until there is one man standing.
00:00:12Stage one of the World Boxing Classic begins
00:00:15as Arthur Abraham takes on Jermaine Taylor
00:00:17and Carl Froch faces Andre Durell.
00:00:20The Super Six World Boxing Classic.
00:00:24Coming up, only on Showtime.
00:00:30This is Showtime Sports.
00:01:01Tonight, a new era in the sport of boxing.
00:01:05A groundbreaking tournament
00:01:07with the six best super middleweights in the world.
00:01:10Two world champions.
00:01:13Two former champions.
00:01:15And a pair of the most promising undefeated contenders
00:01:18are risking their titles, their reputations,
00:01:22and their futures.
00:01:24Only one will emerge the winner,
00:01:26be declared the best of the best,
00:01:29and the champion of the Super Six World Boxing Classic.
00:01:39Tonight begins the Super Six World Boxing Classic
00:01:42with an international doubleheader.
00:01:45From Berlin, Germany, a clash of middleweight stars
00:01:48as Arthur Abraham squares off with American Jermaine Taylor.
00:01:52And from Nottingham, England, a battle of undefeated fighters
00:01:56as British hero Carl Froch takes on American phenom Andre Durell.
00:02:01It's the Super Six World Boxing Classic
00:02:04tonight on Showtime.
00:02:09Hello, everybody. I'm Gus Johnson here in Nottingham, England.
00:02:12This championship trophy for the Super Six World Boxing Classic
00:02:17is the prize, along with worldwide recognition
00:02:20and prestige for the tournament winner.
00:02:22Beginning tonight and in the coming months,
00:02:24six of the best super middleweights in the world
00:02:27will face each other in a modified round-robin format.
00:02:30Four will advance to the semifinals,
00:02:32which will be single elimination,
00:02:34and two survivors will punch it out for this championship trophy.
00:02:39The winner of this unique and compelling tournament
00:02:41will be heralded as the best super middleweight in the world.
00:02:46I'm happy to be joined by two expert analysts.
00:02:49My partner is always Al Bernstein,
00:02:52and we'd also like to welcome
00:02:54former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver.
00:02:57And, gentlemen, after months of complex planning
00:02:59and extensive preparation by the promoters and the six boxers,
00:03:03tonight it all begins.
00:03:06After tonight's doubleheader, stage one is completed
00:03:09when Mikkel Kessler faces undefeated Andre Ward
00:03:12November 21st in the United States.
00:03:15Yeah, and that Kessler-Ward fight might well feature
00:03:17the two best ring technicians, I think, in the tournament.
00:03:20Kessler, one of the favorites,
00:03:22and Ward peaking at the right time.
00:03:25Stage two has Arthur Abraham fighting Andre Durrell.
00:03:29And in a potential title unification bout,
00:03:31WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler
00:03:34against WBC super middleweight champ Karl Froch.
00:03:37Lots of excitement in that stage.
00:03:39Kessler and Froch, that's a fight that is going to resonate in Europe,
00:03:42especially if those two fighters win their initial fights,
00:03:46and this becomes a title unification match.
00:03:49Arthur Abraham has to come to America to face Durrell,
00:03:52and Taylor Ward, I tell you guys, that's going to be a shootout.
00:03:55Stage three has the two Andres facing off,
00:03:58Andre Durrell against Andre Ward, another European showdown,
00:04:01as Arthur Abraham fights Karl Froch,
00:04:04and it's Denmark versus the United States
00:04:07as Mikkel Kessler meets Jermaine Taylor.
00:04:09The unique thing about that stage, I think,
00:04:11is that the two Olympic teammates and friends, Ward and Durrell,
00:04:15they're finally going to meet in the ring,
00:04:17and how could Karl Froch and Arthur Abraham be anything but a war?
00:04:21The group stage winners are awarded with two points for a victory
00:04:25and a one-point bonus for a knockout or TKO.
00:04:28In the event of a draw, each fighter will receive one point.
00:04:31After the group stage, the four fighters with the highest point totals
00:04:35will advance to the single elimination semifinals.
00:04:38The winners of the semifinal bouts will advance to the finals
00:04:42and fight for the inaugural Super 6 World Boxing Classic Cup.
00:04:48And tonight's bouts and all the bouts in this Super 6 tournament
00:04:52will be governed by the unified rules of boxing.
00:04:55One of the key things there are the no three knockdown rule.
00:04:58Of course, the big powerful punchers in this competition,
00:05:01and we may see that come into play, and also an important one,
00:05:04that if there's a clash of heads or something else that causes a cut,
00:05:08after four rounds, they would go to the scorecards
00:05:11or it would be a no decision.
00:05:14Well, Antonio, you know, this type of tournament is really uncharted territory
00:05:18for everyone, especially the boxers.
00:05:20How does a fighter approach this correctly?
00:05:23Well, I think from a fighter's perspective,
00:05:25they must approach this as an individual fight,
00:05:28not be distracted with what's going on in Stage 2 and Stage 3.
00:05:31Because of the point system, they can find themselves
00:05:34in need of a desperation knockout just to advance to the semifinals.
00:05:38And, gentlemen, can this unique tournament concept
00:05:41to determine the best super middleweight in the world
00:05:44revolutionize the sport of boxing?
00:05:46You know, Gus, I kind of see it as more evolutionary than revolutionary
00:05:50because, to me, this is a natural outgrowth of the renaissance of boxing
00:05:54in the last five or six years where we've had great product in the sport.
00:05:58And I think this tournament is important because it will institutionalize
00:06:02great fights over the next coming months in boxing's most talented division.
00:06:07And, Antonio, I can't wait to see it start.
00:06:09Neither can I. And I also feel that it can revolutionize
00:06:12because of the results from the Super 6.
00:06:15Let's face it, with all the attention that the Super 6 is gaining,
00:06:18these two fighters of the finals will be household names
00:06:21and become pure superstars in the sport of boxing.
00:06:24All right, with that in mind, six fighters competing in this tournament,
00:06:28sports analyst Danny Sheridan has set the odds for the field.
00:06:32Yeah, and if there is any surprise at all,
00:06:34it might be that Arthur Abraham is a co-favorite with Mikkel Kessler.
00:06:38Obviously, the three Americans are the underdogs,
00:06:41but they have said publicly this kind of feeling, being the underdog,
00:06:46makes them more motivated to win.
00:06:50All right, while I'm working with Al Bernstein and Antonio Tarver,
00:06:53we're about an hour away from our main event here in Nottingham.
00:06:57And standing by in Berlin, ready to go for the Abraham-Taylor fight,
00:07:01Steve Albert and Steve Farhood.
00:07:04And Steve, as we begin the Super 6 World Boxing Classic,
00:07:07two Americans find themselves on the road.
00:07:12Yeah, that's right, Gus. Like Andre Durrell there in Nottingham, England,
00:07:16Jermaine Taylor is coming into a hostile environment here in Berlin.
00:07:20The undefeated but untested Durrell and the battle-hardened,
00:07:24highly decorated Taylor.
00:07:26And, you know, the stakes may be even higher for Taylor.
00:07:29He's at a career crossroads,
00:07:31especially after his heartbreaking 12th-round knockout loss
00:07:34to Carl Froch last April.
00:07:38Yeah, Gus, Taylor, as you know,
00:07:40led on the judges' scorecards at the time of that knockout.
00:07:43And tonight, he'll have another difficult assignment
00:07:46against the undefeated Arthur Abraham,
00:07:49who says he will be very, very motivated by the hometown crowd.
00:07:53The hard-hitting Abraham is one of four unbeaten fighters in this tournament.
00:07:57He certainly has a sense of invincibility,
00:08:00especially here in Berlin, where he's won 28 of his 30 fights.
00:08:04He has never tasted the canvas, and most of his fights not even close.
00:08:08And who can forget his courageous victory over Edison Miranda,
00:08:12where he fought for eight torrid rounds with a broken jaw.
00:08:15That said, he cannot match Jermaine Taylor's level of opposition
00:08:19in this collision of two former middleweight champions.
00:08:23And with that, let me bring on my ringside partners,
00:08:25Steve Farhad and Steve.
00:08:26Abraham has been insolvable up to this point.
00:08:29For Taylor to win, what has to be the difference?
00:08:32Don't get tired.
00:08:34I don't doubt for a minute, Steve, that Jermaine Taylor
00:08:36has the physical ability to box with Arthur Abraham,
00:08:39if not outright beat him.
00:08:40But fatigue has been a real problem in recent fights.
00:08:43If it's just a physical problem,
00:08:45it's solvable with nutrition, training, et cetera.
00:08:48If it's in his head, it's a bigger problem.
00:08:50He will have trouble going 12 tough rounds,
00:08:52taking 12 rounds of punishment.
00:08:54And if that's the case,
00:08:55you don't want to be in the ring with Arthur Abraham.
00:08:57What is the significance of this tournament to each fighter, Steve?
00:09:00Well, tremendous opportunity, Steve.
00:09:02Arthur Abraham made 10 successful defenses of a middleweight title,
00:09:05but he hasn't yet had a defining fight.
00:09:07And the Super 6 gives him the opportunity to secure one,
00:09:10if not more than one.
00:09:12Abraham wants to further prove himself in America.
00:09:14He wants to be remembered as a superstar, of which there are few,
00:09:17and not just a belt holder, of which there are many.
00:09:20And the Super 6 is his launching pad.
00:09:23Jermaine Taylor,
00:09:24it's not accurate to call him a disappointment inside the ring
00:09:27because he twice beat Bernard Hopkins,
00:09:29and he's only one of two fighters
00:09:31to simultaneously hold the titles of all four major sanctioning organizations.
00:09:35As for outside the ring,
00:09:37I always thought Taylor had the stuff to be a crossover star
00:09:40who transcended boxing.
00:09:41That hasn't happened, and maybe it's too late.
00:09:44But the Super 6 gives him one last chance.
00:09:46Well, Jermaine Taylor yearns to recapture the aura of his glory days
00:09:51Abraham begins his quest to become a global star.
00:09:54So much rides on this fight and this Super 6 tournament,
00:09:58and it all begins tonight.
00:10:02Two years of my life in this tournament
00:10:04is the most important two years of my life, I feel like.
00:10:07Every boxer boxing for world championship is very dangerous.
00:10:12My next fight with Taylor, for me, very hard fight.
00:10:17A win in Germany, that means everything.
00:10:20Jermaine Taylor is a legendary boxer.
00:10:23I go to win first for me, and after for Germany, for everybody.
00:10:27People think that he's great.
00:10:29He's undefeated, now you know he's coming in my weight class.
00:10:32And after I beat him, maybe I can get my respect back
00:10:34that I want so bad.
00:10:35I want to have big career in America.
00:10:38You can win, win, win, you have a good name.
00:10:41You can see tonight who is smarter in ring.
00:10:45I want to send a statement.
00:10:46You don't want none of this.
00:10:48I'm still hungry.
00:10:50I am too hungry.
00:10:51I won't win against Taylor.
00:10:53I just know what it takes.
00:10:55I can have boxing.
00:10:56I'm more experienced.
00:10:59I need to fight, and I need to be clever.
00:11:03Only win, only win.
00:11:05I fought the best in the world.
00:11:07I'm not worried about nobody in the tournament.
00:11:19Berlin.
00:11:42Berlin, let's get this party started.
00:11:45Coming to the main event, her name, Bad Intentions,
00:11:51Payne!
00:11:57So this sellout crowd of 14,000 ready to greet the two fighters fighting outside the U.S.
00:12:25for the first time since the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the pride of Little Rock, Arkansas, undisputed
00:12:34former middleweight champion Jermaine Taylor.
00:12:40He's got the best resume in this tournament, but he's lost three of his last four, two by knockout,
00:12:46more than a two-to-one underdog tonight against Arthur Abraham, written off by a lot of people,
00:12:53but he insists he's not done, despite the dreaded stamina problem, which he said was rectified
00:13:00by completely overhauling his training and dietary habits, but if this goes deep,
00:13:05will he run out of gas, as he did with Karl Fratsch and Kelly Pavlin, Steve?
00:13:11Well, Steve, he's certainly given himself the best chance to win.
00:13:14For the Fratsch fight, he had to lose 20 pounds in 20 days.
00:13:18This fight, he's basically been on weight since he got to Berlin,
00:13:21and a nutritionist made all the difference.
00:13:24Perhaps the most compelling story in the Super 6, the biggest name in the tournament,
00:13:30yet he probably has the most to lose, a win, and his career is back on track.
00:13:35Yeah, the most to gain, too.
00:13:39That being said, because he's not expected to win, maybe it takes some of the pressure off,
00:13:45allowing him to fight relaxed, which is when Jermaine Taylor is at his best.
00:13:55So the veteran Jermaine Taylor makes it into the ring for the start of the Super 6.
00:14:02The fans are ready for this hotly anticipated tournament on a cool, damp night in Berlin, Germany.
00:14:11And they are getting ready to cheer on their king, Arthur Abraham,
00:14:15who's revered here in Berlin, his home for the past 15 years.
00:14:18As Taylor, they have to wait a while, Steve,
00:14:22because they are planning a very elaborate pre-fight entrance.
00:14:26So the excitement and the electricity is very high for our co-main event
00:14:32and the kickoff to Stage 1 of the Super 6 World Boxing Classic.
00:14:37There's always excitement in Germany when Arthur Abraham fights Steve,
00:14:40but this tournament has captured the imagination of this city.
00:14:43As a result, there's more electricity than usual.
00:14:46A party atmosphere, Steve, no question about that.
00:14:50And now, ladies and gentlemen,
00:14:53coming to the ring to the music of the Scorpions
00:14:57with 3, 2, 1,
00:15:00King Arthur Abraham!

00:22:21-!
00:22:21Okay, I already gave you the instruction
00:22:24in the dressing room.
00:22:25I want a clean fight.
00:22:27This is the line where the low blows are legal.
00:22:29Good luck, check the gloves,
00:22:31and go to your corners.
00:22:37That is a super six stare down.
00:22:4114,000 strong at the O2 Berlin.
00:22:44Taylor said there'd be more pressure on Abraham
00:22:46to perform well in front of his hometown crowd.
00:22:49We'll see who will draw first blood in the super six.
00:22:53Will Arthur Abraham, a notoriously slow starter,
00:22:56lay back in his defensive shell,
00:22:59or will he come out aggressively?
00:23:01Will he wait to see what Jermaine Taylor does?
00:23:04Here we go, Lupe Garcia brings them together.
00:23:07We are underway in the super six
00:23:09world boxing classic from Berlin.
00:23:13Taylor said he'll box.
00:23:14When there's any opportunity, he'll jab right through.
00:23:18Really important to keep Abraham at the end of the jab.
00:23:22Big right hand missing by Taylor.
00:23:24You don't want to get too close to Arthur Abraham.
00:23:27A very hard puncher, extremely strong.
00:23:29Better skills than a lot of people think.
00:23:32So tough physically and mentally.
00:23:34And remember, never lost, never down, and fighting at home.
00:23:42Strategy-wise, Steve, it's very important
00:23:44if Arthur Abraham's gonna keep his peekaboo defense
00:23:47like that that Taylor punch and land some jabs,
00:23:50punch through the gloves like he did with Winky Wright.
00:23:54You have to let him score points,
00:23:55because if Abraham's gonna let you score points,
00:23:57you have to put the rounds in the bank.
00:24:00Taylor in the red, very athletic.
00:24:02He's got the fast hands, the height and reach,
00:24:04the experience.
00:24:06Not easy to outclass Taylor.
00:24:08Big question, can he get it done
00:24:10without burning himself out?
00:24:13Now Taylor with a left hook
00:24:14that's grabbed by the right glove of Abraham.
00:24:18Taylor can also fight.
00:24:19He won't back down, terrific right hand.
00:24:22And Flach has a great chin, but can he hurt Abraham?
00:24:26The thing is, you don't want to get into big exchanges
00:24:28with Arthur Abraham.
00:24:31He's gotta outwork King Arthur.
00:24:34Here's a combination followed by another heavy right
00:24:36by Abraham, jabbed back by Taylor.
00:24:40Wide shots from Abraham.
00:24:42Taylor did not respond well to that wide right hand.
00:24:46Usually his left hook is wide
00:24:48when you can answer back with a straight right
00:24:51and then a jab down the middle on the inside.
00:24:53We'll see if Taylor does that.
00:24:55Taylor has a habit of holding his left hand low.
00:24:59You gotta be cognizant of that.
00:25:00If you're Arthur Abraham, he can launch a right.
00:25:07Taylor going to the body.
00:25:10And that's a good move, Steve,
00:25:11because if Abraham's gonna hold his gloves by his head,
00:25:14the body is there to be hit.
00:25:15Taylor's camp feels Abraham is protected here at home
00:25:18by the refs, particularly with body shots.
00:25:21They feel Abraham doesn't like body shots,
00:25:23and he does leave himself a little space there
00:25:27with that peek-a-boo defense.
00:25:30They think, the Taylor camp,
00:25:32that the refs will warn opponents for low blows
00:25:35when they're legal.
00:25:36A major bone of contention
00:25:38with Taylor's promoter, Lou DiBella.
00:25:44Taylor fights best when he's relaxed, Steve,
00:25:46and he seems to be pretty relaxed right here.
00:25:48Well, he's using the ring well.
00:25:50He wants distance.
00:25:51He wants this to be an outside fight,
00:25:52and so far it has been.
00:25:58Going head for the bell, round one.
00:26:00Good left hand there.
00:26:02Near the bell by Jermaine Taylor.
00:26:11Kingston, victory for Arthur Abraham.
00:26:14Force the pace early.
00:26:15Make Taylor work throughout the fight
00:26:17and use the jab.
00:26:18It's the best way to get him fatigued.
00:26:20Use the jab.
00:26:21It's a legit weapon,
00:26:22and Abraham's shown it to be effective
00:26:24versus smaller opponents.
00:26:25And bring his hands back
00:26:26because Abraham is most vulnerable
00:26:28after he punches because he drops his hand.
00:26:32He's for Jermaine Taylor.
00:26:33Stay off the ropes.
00:26:34If Taylor backs off,
00:26:35it's a sure sign that his legs are going.
00:26:38Lots of rights.
00:26:39In spots, Abraham will let Taylor punch.
00:26:41Taylor should take advantage and finish the work.
00:26:44Taylor dropped both Pavlik and Fratch.
00:26:46They lost both fights.
00:27:01Wide right hand by Abraham
00:27:02as his brother looks on.
00:27:04Doesn't like what he sees,
00:27:05but it wasn't any reaction to that right hand
00:27:06that landed flush.
00:27:11His younger brother, Alex,
00:27:12a fine junior middleweight who's 25-0-1.
00:27:15And in the second round of round two,
00:27:19Jermaine Taylor comes out jabbing.
00:27:25Wow, getting behind Arthur Abraham,
00:27:28whose unusual style is designed to wear you out,
00:27:31to make you expend energy,
00:27:33that guard up high.
00:27:35His version of the rope-a-dope.
00:27:37And it's critical for Taylor to punch,
00:27:40even if he doesn't land,
00:27:41because Abraham's punch output is so slim,
00:27:43Steve, in these early rounds,
00:27:45he's able to get a lot of volume
00:27:47just by punching whether he lands or not.
00:27:48Are you intrigued that nobody has figured out
00:27:50a way to outpoint Abraham?
00:27:52I'm very intrigued, because his fights
00:27:53haven't really even been close here in Germany.
00:27:55He does bring a puzzling style.
00:27:57You don't know if he's gonna lay back or brawl.
00:28:01And he can uncoil out of that defensive shield
00:28:03quickly and explosively.
00:28:07And it's not easy to get a decision here in Germany.
00:28:12With that in mind, as Jermaine Taylor
00:28:14has been talking about,
00:28:16Arthur Abraham framing low blow.
00:28:18We discussed it, we talked about this before,
00:28:20and this a major concern of the Jermaine Taylor camp.
00:28:26But that was a low blow.
00:28:28Steve, the replay shows it all.
00:28:30That was definitely a low blow.
00:28:33And he is being cautioned
00:28:35by the referee, Guadalupe Garcia.
00:28:40This was an issue at the rules meeting, Steve.
00:28:42And they had a long argument about what makes a low blow.
00:28:45Well, that was a low blow.
00:28:47Well, if you saw the first Edison Miranda fight,
00:28:51that was a familiar sight.
00:28:55So we resume.
00:28:57Steve, it's interesting, Taylor's jabbing much more,
00:28:59but Abraham is really making his jabs count.
00:29:01Very accurate as a puncher,
00:29:03with his jabs and his power shots, both.
00:29:06Abraham, a very smart fighter.
00:29:07He's so adaptable.
00:29:09There's the right-left combination.
00:29:10The left got through the guard of Taylor.
00:29:14There's that jab, once again, by Abraham.
00:29:16Yes, the jab, very effective by Arthur Abraham.
00:29:20Taylor does have a very good jab.
00:29:22It's not just a probing range fighting jab,
00:29:25but an effective weapon.
00:29:31An uppercut on the inside by Taylor.
00:29:34Another one, followed by a left hook to the head.
00:29:38Abraham shaking his head as if to say,
00:29:41it didn't hurt me, or he's upset with himself.
00:29:43And the referee signaled with his hands to Taylor,
00:29:46keep the punches up.
00:29:47Taylor doesn't want to back himself into a corner
00:29:49with too many warnings this early.
00:29:52And just as he told us he would do,
00:29:54he is jabbing away at Arthur Abraham,
00:29:58and it is effective.
00:30:01Good part of the round for Taylor.
00:30:02Missed with that sweeping left hook.
00:30:05Back comes Abraham, but didn't bother Taylor.
00:30:13Those jabs being blocked by the gloves of Abraham.
00:30:17So hard to get through that defense.
00:30:20Here comes Abraham, popping shots off Taylor's head,
00:30:25and he's claiming to Garcia,
00:30:27those punches were in the back of the head,
00:30:30and therefore illegal.
00:30:32And now he is saying that to Abraham.
00:30:35So roughhouse tactics here in the early going, Steve.
00:30:38Well, you see it there, Abraham pouring it on.
00:30:41The fight starts as usual when Arthur Abraham says it starts.
00:30:44And that was two right hands to the back of the head, Steve.
00:30:46Very much so.
00:31:02Just concentrate yourself, concentrate yourself.
00:31:04Stay cool.
00:31:16Okay, so you gotta make the next round.
00:31:18The next round is for you.
00:31:19Gotta make it.
00:31:25The giant, Mr. Valuet.
00:31:29One of the heavyweight champions on hand here tonight.
00:31:34Round three.
00:31:36Did you see Taylor winning the first two?
00:31:38I did, the second round was much closer.
00:31:40Abraham poured it on a little bit
00:31:42in the second half of that round,
00:31:43but I gave Taylor both.
00:31:45Mostly on volume punching, Steve.
00:31:46And Steve, it's not out of the ordinary for Abraham,
00:31:49who often fights at his own pace,
00:31:51to be down in the first two, three rounds.
00:31:54But he does have a way of taking over historically.
00:31:57We'll see how it unfolds tonight.
00:31:59Abraham is fighting the kind of fight, or at least Steve,
00:32:02that it's pretty clear he's counting
00:32:04on the second half of the fight
00:32:06to pour it on and make Taylor fold.
00:32:11And historically, particularly of late,
00:32:13that has been the big problem for Jermaine Taylor.
00:32:15Taylor knows it.
00:32:17We asked him about that in the fighter meeting yesterday,
00:32:20and he did say, yeah, he feels that Abraham's probably
00:32:23gonna try to take this deep,
00:32:25try to wear him out, wear him down,
00:32:27try to wear him out, wear him down, make him tired.
00:32:31See if he runs out of gas, test his endurance.
00:32:35Hard body shots by Abraham.
00:32:38And then you go in for the late knockout
00:32:40if you're Arthur Abraham.
00:32:44Nice move by Abraham, that combination punching.
00:32:46And then he took a step out and to the side.
00:32:49Taylor's counterpunch missed by miles.
00:32:51And Arthur Abraham, dangerous from start to finish.
00:32:54And when he has you in trouble, if he smells blood,
00:32:57that's when he really turns up the aggression.
00:32:59Again, Taylor using that jab to try to keep distance.
00:33:09But those punches are not effective.
00:33:11They're being blocked by Abraham's gloves,
00:33:15who's in that peekaboo style there.
00:33:19And again, all this makes you expend a lot of energy.
00:33:23And if you get Jermaine Taylor, that's not what you want.
00:33:27He completely revamped his training.
00:33:31But you made a great point earlier saying,
00:33:33is it more physical or mental?
00:33:36And maybe we'll find that out tonight.
00:33:38You saw an interesting move there by Taylor.
00:33:39He stepped inside when Abraham punched.
00:33:42Abraham punches wide, you're safer when you're in close.
00:33:45Plus, Abraham isn't an infighter.
00:33:46He doesn't like fighting on the inside,
00:33:48surprisingly, given his lack of height.
00:33:50Missing with a wild right, Arthur Abraham.
00:33:53Abraham only 5'9", but as we said earlier,
00:33:56right hand clipped the head of Jermaine Taylor at 5'9".
00:34:00Abraham's got long arms.
00:34:07Again, the jab by Taylor pushing Abraham back.
00:34:10You want to try to push Abraham back to the ropes
00:34:12because when he's on the ropes, he usually doesn't punch.
00:34:15And that's when you can really outwork him.
00:34:17Heavy right hand there to the head by Abraham.
00:34:19He's scoring now in round three, starting to come alive.
00:34:23And every one of those right hands is from the side.
00:34:27And now Jermaine Taylor.
00:34:32Upset because of punches to the back of the head.
00:34:35Once again, at the bell.
00:34:40Mikkel Kessler on hand.
00:34:41The WBA super middleweight champ
00:34:43will be fighting Andre Ward,
00:34:46November 21st at Oakland in the Super Six.
00:34:50Good job.
00:34:51You hit your side of the head, you hit the back.
00:34:53Don't take nothing.
00:34:54You hit that ground.
00:34:56Remember, Taylor, they want a clean fight, okay?
00:34:58Yes, sir.
00:35:01Hey, start going away from the right hand.
00:35:04Angle, get an angle.
00:35:06Jermaine, if you ever start thinking about
00:35:08dropping that left hand, use the right.
00:35:10But you got to go toward the right.
00:35:13Nice round.
00:35:14Nice, good, nice round.
00:35:15Don't let him get too close.
00:35:17As soon as you try to go for the side of the counter,
00:35:18he's got to chop.
00:35:25Arthur, Arthur, Arthur, Arthur, Arthur.
00:35:32So Arthur Abraham, who may be in a 3-0 hole here,
00:35:36has to answer.
00:35:38Jermaine Taylor, who came out exploding
00:35:41from the blocks there to begin round three.
00:35:46And he looks very determined now.
00:35:47He is really ticked off at Arthur Abraham
00:35:52for the shots behind the head.
00:35:55And he comes out fast here in round three.
00:35:58Well, tough rounds for the judges, two and three,
00:36:01because Abraham punching less often, more effectively.
00:36:05Taylor, more often, less effectively.
00:36:07Beg your pardon, round four.
00:36:16And again, a warning from Lupe Garcia
00:36:21for the low blow by Jermaine Taylor.
00:36:29Abraham in no hurry, very deliberate.
00:36:35Going to the body with that punishing blow.
00:36:50They told him to use the right more in the corner,
00:36:52and he is.
00:36:53Jermaine Taylor setting it up with the jab.
00:36:57The right hand block there.
00:37:00Taylor can't get too happy.
00:37:02What I mean by that, Steve, is when he punches,
00:37:04he has to keep moving to the side.
00:37:05That'll take away Abraham's counterpunch.
00:37:07The thing is, though, Steve,
00:37:09he's more of a flat-footed fighter
00:37:10who moves backward and forward.
00:37:12And there was an off-balance issue for Abraham.
00:37:16He's not really a side-to-side guy,
00:37:18but he's going to have to adapt here
00:37:20against Abraham.
00:37:31Developing into a very interesting fight here
00:37:33in the early going.
00:37:37Not much of a first minute of this round four for Abraham.
00:37:39He's done almost nothing.
00:37:41But again, he doesn't really concern himself that much
00:37:43about digging an early hole,
00:37:45because, as you mentioned, rightly so before,
00:37:49he really turns it up in the second half of the fight.
00:37:52Exactly.
00:37:53As I said when he fought Mahir O'Reil on Showtime,
00:37:56the fight starts when Arthur Abraham says the fight starts.
00:37:59He put O'Reil down in that two-to-five times.
00:38:03And he's got a lot of ground to make up for it.
00:38:06He's got a lot of ground to make up for it.
00:38:07He's going to tune up five times.
00:38:12And O'Reil carried his left hand very low,
00:38:15like Jermaine Taylor.
00:38:16Of course, Mahir O'Reil is not Jermaine Taylor,
00:38:19but there is that similarity.
00:38:20We'll see if he becomes a factor.
00:38:29A chippy fight.
00:38:30Oh, no!
00:38:33And they do touch gloves.
00:38:36Wilfred Sauerland, the promoter of Arthur Abraham,
00:38:40and part of this crowd of 14,000 enjoying the action.
00:38:46Reaction.
00:39:04Stay in the middle.
00:39:05Stay in the middle.
00:39:06Do some action, okay?
00:39:09Okay, just keep yourself stabilized, please.
00:39:13Okay, you can make it.
00:39:14You can make it.
00:39:15Just trust yourself.
00:39:18Okay, you make to need to do some action, okay?
00:39:23Action from round four.
00:39:27Is that another right hand behind the head?
00:39:31By Abraham.
00:39:32Our thanks to our translator, Alexander Stepitot,
00:39:35and our thanks to ARD Television here in Germany,
00:39:38and all the terrific production people assisting us
00:39:42with the telecast tonight.
00:39:46Round five.
00:39:47Abraham, some swelling over the right eye.
00:39:49He's really not a bleeder.
00:39:50He has had swelling problems,
00:39:52but hasn't bled in too many fights.
00:39:57You're talking about Abraham?
00:39:58Yes.
00:39:59With the exception of that first Miranda fight,
00:40:02but that was from the inside of the mouth
00:40:03when the blood was pouring out.
00:40:05His face was disfigured
00:40:07because his jaw was broken against Miranda,
00:40:09but the blood was coming from a laceration
00:40:12on the inside of the mouth.
00:40:15Abraham's been very effective with that jab.
00:40:17Interesting to see if he starts using it more.
00:40:21But the punch that's landed repeatedly for him
00:40:23is the wide right hand.
00:40:26Hasn't thrown him much in the last couple of rounds.
00:40:31Abraham able to elude
00:40:35the jabbing attempts of Jermaine Taylor.
00:40:45Going to the body then upstairs with the right hand.
00:40:49It pushed Abraham back momentarily,
00:40:52but now Abraham coming forward.
00:40:59Which sometimes is a signal that he's ready to get it off.
00:41:03Well, he better soon.
00:41:04I think Taylor's putting some rounds in the bank,
00:41:08and he wants to tire Taylor out.
00:41:11Does he try to lull you into a false sense of security
00:41:14and then do that?
00:41:15Exactly.
00:41:16Let you think that he's easy to hit.
00:41:19He is a very intelligent fighter, isn't he?
00:41:22Abraham.
00:41:22And with a unique style.
00:41:24Puzzling too many.
00:41:27Long right hand by Abraham.
00:41:29That's starting to find a home.
00:41:34By far, Abraham's most effective round.
00:41:37And Taylor has to know right now,
00:41:39even though he was very effective in the first four rounds,
00:41:42that he is in there with a bull
00:41:44and a very strong man.
00:41:58Taylor coming forward for a brief second,
00:42:00but then he stepped back,
00:42:02and now they go at it on the inside.
00:42:09It's totally an outside fight, Steve.
00:42:11Nothing resembling any infighting.
00:42:13That was surprisingly a wild exchange.
00:42:17There's a straight right hand that pushes Taylor back.
00:42:21And that connected.
00:42:23That one missed.
00:42:27Best round by far for Arthur Abraham.
00:42:29Round five.
00:42:31Time!
00:42:38Let's go to Nottingham, England.
00:42:42All right, Steve, thank you very much.
00:42:43Jim Gray in Nottingham, England,
00:42:45as we get ready for Durell against Karl Fratsch.
00:42:47Karl joins us now.
00:42:48Karl, you said you felt that it was disrespectful and naive
00:42:51for Durell to get here just six days in advance.
00:42:53Why did you say that?
00:42:55I don't think six days is long enough
00:42:56to get the flight out of you, Steve.
00:42:58You need to get the flight out of your system, the jet lag.
00:43:01I know it's still, it says on California time,
00:43:04but you need to get the flight totally out of your system
00:43:07and give yourself at least 21 days,
00:43:08three weeks to acclimatize.
00:43:11But I don't know, he might know something I don't.
00:43:13It's not a massive advantage, but it's a little summit.
00:43:16But you would probably be asleep at 2 a.m.,
00:43:18and he would be getting ready to have dinner.
00:43:19Why is that an advantage?
00:43:22It's nothing to do with getting to sleep
00:43:23and getting ready to have dinner.
00:43:23It's to do with the 10-hour flight.
00:43:26It's a long, long way,
00:43:27and it's gonna be dangerous for him.
00:43:29All right, we look forward to the fight.
00:43:30Let's go back to Berlin and Steve Albert.
00:43:32Welcome back to Berlin, Germany.
00:43:36Thank you very much.
00:43:39Gus Johnson, where later tonight,
00:43:42it'll be Fratsch versus Durell
00:43:45from Nottingham, England, in the Super Six.
00:43:52Round six from Berlin.
00:43:56And wide left followed up by a straight right
00:43:58by Abraham, who has come on
00:44:03after a slow start, but that is nothing unusual
00:44:05for the Armenian.
00:44:07Yeah, the logical script for this fight is being played out.
00:44:12Taylor early, Abraham comes on.
00:44:15Let's see how effective Abraham is when he comes on.
00:44:23And Abraham a lot more aggressive
00:44:25than he was in the first few rounds.
00:44:29Starting to turn it on in the fifth round.
00:44:34And he's got that fire in his eyes.
00:44:37And the best thing Taylor can do is,
00:44:39if he thinks Abraham's about to punch,
00:44:41take a step at his man,
00:44:43all those punches will go around Taylor's head,
00:44:45nothing will land.
00:44:48The crowd chanting for Arthur Abraham
00:44:51on the white fronts.
00:44:55Good body shots by Arthur Abraham.
00:44:59Has to take it out of you.
00:45:04The accumulative effect.
00:45:07Now he pushes Jermaine Taylor back with a jab,
00:45:10fires a right to the body.
00:45:12The jab by Taylor is weakening.
00:45:16And now again, Abraham says low blow.
00:45:19And this could be a point.
00:45:21Many, many times, many, many times.
00:45:23One point deduction.
00:45:25One point deduction.
00:45:27One point deduction.
00:45:28Everybody think about this, okay?
00:45:30Guadalupe Garcia deducting a point from Jermaine Taylor
00:45:35for excessive low blows.
00:45:37Well, we saw that coming in round two
00:45:38when there had already been two or three warnings.
00:45:46Critical though, Steve,
00:45:47that Taylor does not decide to abandon the body.
00:45:49He's landed clean there.
00:45:51He hasn't landed clean upstairs.
00:45:52And he's cautioned again by Garcia.
00:45:59You're right, now psychologically he feels,
00:46:01hey, I can't go that way anymore.
00:46:04I'm gonna get penalized.
00:46:06And it's a big point of his attack.
00:46:12So hard to get through that guard.
00:46:14Good right hand by Abraham.
00:46:16Back comes the jab of Taylor, pushing Abraham back.
00:46:19Abraham misses wildly with the left.
00:46:22Got him on the top of the head with the right.
00:46:27I see a lot less oomph on Taylor's jab.
00:46:32These hard punches to the body
00:46:34are starting to take their toll on Taylor.
00:46:47Abraham now is playing around
00:46:50with Jermaine Taylor as the bell sounds.
00:46:55And here's action from round six.
00:46:56You see it's low.
00:46:58Abraham keeps those elbows so low
00:47:00that if you don't want to hit the point of his elbow,
00:47:02you have to punch below that point,
00:47:03and that's gonna be a low blow, and that was a low blow.
00:47:11And Abraham comes back with a right hand.
00:47:13And he's coming back with a right hand.
00:47:15Maybe Abraham's best round, but that was low,
00:47:20and given the warning, Steve,
00:47:21I don't have any argument with the point he got there.
00:47:30Fame trainer Uli Weckner.
00:47:37Listen to me, okay? Listen to me.
00:47:38Listen to my voice.
00:47:40Okay, one, two, one, two.
00:47:42Give him some punches, okay?
00:47:44Just a variety of punches. Do that.
00:47:51I'm gonna say those are the Scorpions.
00:47:53And you are correct, sir.
00:47:55Very good, Steve.
00:47:56I know my Scorpions.
00:47:58Round seven, scheduled for 12.
00:48:01The Super 6 World Boxing Classic
00:48:03underway from Berlin, Germany.
00:48:05Nottingham, England, later with Brock Terrell.
00:48:09Abraham really coming on the last few rounds,
00:48:13and it's beginning to have his way now
00:48:15with Jermaine Taylor.
00:48:17Taylor's jab not having as much effect
00:48:19as it had in the first few rounds.
00:48:22Taylor losing a point for low blows,
00:48:27and everything's going Abraham's way right now.
00:48:30Yeah, 10-8 round in the sixth for Arthur Abraham.
00:48:33I have Taylor up one point after six rounds.
00:48:36I think Abraham would take that at this point.
00:48:38And Taylor missing with a right uppercut attempt there.
00:48:44He is best when he mixes with uppercuts and hooks,
00:48:47but we're seeing predominantly the jab.
00:48:57And we're now getting to that point
00:48:58that's very interesting, Steve,
00:49:00in terms of Taylor's stamina issues.
00:49:03It's the start of the second half of the fight.
00:49:09Where Taylor has begun to fade.
00:49:13Well, you look for the signs.
00:49:14Against Brock, Taylor's starting walking backwards straight.
00:49:17That was a bad sign.
00:49:18So far in this fight, though,
00:49:20he's doing a very good job of keeping his hands up
00:49:22when Abraham punches.
00:49:23Yeah, the tell-tale signs.
00:49:25If he starts holding a lot,
00:49:26and if he's punched, the count drops.
00:49:32And Abraham knows that.
00:49:35So he's going to continue to pound away
00:49:37and then go back into his defensive posture.
00:49:41And the only thing really that's getting through
00:49:43from time to time is that pecking jab by Taylor.
00:49:46And it's not doing any damage.
00:49:58Terrific body shots and upstairs by Abraham.
00:50:04Just more ferocity when Abraham punches.
00:50:08Punishing power, missing with the wide left hook.
00:50:13And they tie each other up.
00:50:16Watch the head, says Garcia.
00:50:25It's a warning for a kidney blow there.
00:50:30Abraham going for the knockout punch there,
00:50:34but missed.
00:50:35He was looking to close the show with that right hand.
00:50:41Abraham patient, waiting for his moment,
00:50:43got a left hook in that startled Taylor.
00:50:47Taylor has to punch back when Abraham punches.
00:50:50That's when you can hit Abraham.
00:50:54No tell.
00:50:56Couldn't hear it, the crowd was so loud.
00:51:04When you put them earmuffs up,
00:51:06you've got to step over and put that damn left hand down
00:51:09and throw the right hand.
00:51:10You've got to do it.
00:51:12You can get him up out of here.
00:51:13Just relax.
00:51:14Don't worry about the knockout shot.
00:51:15Just relax.
00:51:17Just relax.
00:51:19He's ready.
00:51:25He's turning it.
00:51:26Hook off the jab right hand, all right?
00:51:28Watch the right-handed point.
00:51:30Coming down the middle now.
00:51:31I see that turn.
00:51:32I know you see it.
00:51:33But it's close.
00:51:35I see it every time.
00:51:36All right, as long as you see it.
00:51:37All right.
00:51:39Come on now.
00:51:47Action from the seventh again.
00:51:49Abraham snapping Taylor's head back.
00:51:52Look at that jab.
00:51:52He has really out-jabbed Taylor,
00:51:54who's probably thrown three times
00:51:56as many jabs in the fight.
00:51:57Things getting urgent in that Taylor corner
00:51:59as we begin round eight.
00:52:03Taylor looking a little discouraged.
00:52:07And perhaps realizing what everybody
00:52:09has been talking about with regard
00:52:14to the punching power of Arthur Abraham.
00:52:19And as El Nelson, Taylor's trainer,
00:52:21wants him to move to the right,
00:52:22pull down Abraham's left glove
00:52:24and fire that right hand.
00:52:25We haven't seen that many right hands from Taylor.
00:52:28It is his best punch by far.
00:52:30It's not Kyle Frotsch early.
00:52:33Even though Frotsch got off the canvas to win.
00:52:37And it dropped Kelly to Abraham,
00:52:39who got off the canvas to win.
00:52:43Abraham has never been down.
00:52:4730 and 0.
00:52:5224 by knockout.
00:52:57Interesting, we've been looking for signs
00:52:58that Taylor might drop his gloves.
00:53:00It's Abraham who's boxing on the outside
00:53:02with his hands low at times.
00:53:04Yeah.
00:53:14Abraham starts off with that looping left hook.
00:53:18Tries to finish with the right.
00:53:21But those punches didn't land.
00:53:23Abraham is so damn inconsistent
00:53:25with his offense though, Steve.
00:53:27He never has long stretches where he's effective.
00:53:30He is sporadic.
00:53:32You know, he boxes the way football teams play.
00:53:34He's either on offense or he's on defense.
00:53:36But he doesn't do both at the same time.
00:53:38Interesting analogy.
00:53:45That one got through that jab by Taylor,
00:53:49but it's gonna take a lot to get through.
00:53:52It's gonna take more than that
00:53:53to rock the chin of Arthur Abraham.
00:53:56And the reason Taylor's jabs are coming in there
00:53:58is because Abraham's hands have been down,
00:54:00which is unusual for him.
00:54:06Well, with good timing like that,
00:54:08I was just gonna say,
00:54:09if Taylor can see that opening and fire that right,
00:54:12his money punch, who knows?
00:54:15Here comes Abraham on the attack.
00:54:23Oh, oh.
00:54:24Only effective punch in that entire flurry
00:54:26was Abraham's hook to the body.
00:54:30And that's a punch he recently added to his arsenal.
00:54:33He used to be a one-punch guy.
00:54:35Just the right hand, but that left hook
00:54:37is a freight train punch.
00:54:44Missing with the right,
00:54:45counter right by Taylor, fell short.
00:54:49Time!
00:54:53That's another round for Abraham.
00:54:55I have him up 76-75 after eight rounds.
00:54:58For more on the second half of our doubleheader,
00:55:00let's go back to Nottingham, England.
00:55:03Jim Gray back in Nottingham, now with Andre Durrell.
00:55:06He will fight Karl Fratz in about a half an hour from now.
00:55:09How are your nerves?
00:55:10Biggest fight of your career?
00:55:11Oh, I'm pretty nervous,
00:55:12but more prepared than anything, so I'm ready to go.
00:55:15Fratz just said, just relax.
00:55:17Fratz just said, just recently and during the week,
00:55:20unprofessional for you to be here this late and naive.
00:55:23Six days here in England.
00:55:25Is that enough time, and are you adjusted?
00:55:26Well, most definitely.
00:55:27I'm definitely ready.
00:55:29I'm setting my ways.
00:55:30I gotta adjust it real fast,
00:55:32but it seems to me he's looking for me to get tired.
00:55:35He's depending on me to get tired,
00:55:36and if that's the case, then he's in for a big shot.
00:55:39All right, Andre, we look forward to the fight,
00:55:40about 30 minutes from now.
00:55:42Thanks a lot.
00:55:42All right, with that, that's it from England for now.
00:55:45We'll be back in about 30 minutes.
00:55:47Let's go back to Berlin and rejoin Steve Albert.
00:55:52Folks.
00:55:57All right, thanks very much.
00:55:58Gus Johnson, Al Bernstein, Antonio Tarbert,
00:56:00Jim Gray standing by to call
00:56:02the Karl Fratz-Andre Durrell fight coming up later tonight.
00:56:07It is round nine, scheduled for 12.
00:56:11Arthur Abraham having his way the last few rounds
00:56:14after Jermaine Taylor got off to the good early start.
00:56:20But Abraham, from time to time,
00:56:21showing a little kick in the arm
00:56:23by keeping his hands down low.
00:56:24We'll see if Taylor can take advantage with the right hand.
00:56:30See, when this Super Six was announced,
00:56:31one of the things we liked about it,
00:56:33the balance in all six fighters.
00:56:36We're seeing a very competitive fight right here.
00:56:38And it is the best against the best overall
00:56:41to determine the premier super middleweight in the world.
00:56:46Oh, what a right hand at Rock Taylor.
00:56:49A right hand by Abraham and Taylor's in trouble.
00:56:54Abraham's trying to close the show here in round nine.
00:57:04And Taylor holds on.
00:57:06Garcia breaks it up.
00:57:09Taylor trying to regain his composure.
00:57:12He was wobbled.
00:57:16A left to the neck now by Abraham.
00:57:18If there were doubts in Taylor's mind coming in,
00:57:20they surfaced right here.
00:57:26But Abraham steps back and, for the moment,
00:57:30lets him off the hook.
00:57:31Taylor was momentarily dazed.
00:57:34Abraham couldn't finish him off.
00:57:39And he's off the hook again.
00:57:46Taylor has his legs back under him
00:57:48and a right uppercut by Taylor on the inside.
00:57:51And again, the inconsistency of Abraham's attack.
00:57:54When it would serve him best to pour it on, he doesn't.
00:57:57Yeah, he really held back.
00:58:01That was a borderline shot.
00:58:03Left hook to the body.
00:58:05There's the jab by Abraham, pushes Taylor back.
00:58:09And he's the smallest man in the tournament,
00:58:13or Abraham, the smallest man.
00:58:16And Taylor's doing the right thing.
00:58:18The round is gone.
00:58:18He's not gonna win the round.
00:58:20He's gotta last the round.
00:58:22It's a 10-8 round for Abraham
00:58:23almost no matter what Taylor does from this point on,
00:58:25but he's doing a good job.
00:58:27He held when he had to hold.
00:58:28He still has his legs.
00:58:30Another right hand by Abraham.
00:58:34He's missing wildly, though, with certain punches, Abraham.
00:58:39We wonder if Taylor can take advantage with a counter.
00:58:46And Abraham would get an extra point if he wins by knockout.
00:58:48Let's not forget the tournament rules.
00:58:50Two points for a winner,
00:58:51an additional point for a knockout,
00:58:53no points for a winner.
00:58:58Taylor's in no mood to shake Abraham's hand.
00:59:03And here it is.
00:59:04It's a right, a straight right.
00:59:07We talked earlier about how Abraham was throwing wide rights.
00:59:10Taylor told his corner a round ago,
00:59:11I see the straight right coming.
00:59:13He didn't see that because it was disguised by a jab.
00:59:18And Alexander, Abraham loved it.
00:59:22Which way? Don't go the same way, all right?
00:59:25Keep your hands up good.
00:59:26Use some feint.
00:59:27Your pull jab was working good, all right?
00:59:30Don't force a right hand.
00:59:31You see it, go ahead and drop it off.
00:59:34Try to come behind him.
00:59:36And then remember how he jumped in
00:59:37after you threw that right hand?
00:59:39Two, three.
00:59:40Drop the two.
00:59:41Face up again.
00:59:48Knowing the rules,
00:59:49Jermaine Taylor wants to survive at any cost.
00:59:53He doesn't want to go down and lose an additional point.
01:00:00Round 10.
01:00:02These rounds suddenly are just flying by.
01:00:09For Rush, anyway.
01:00:10Maybe not Jermaine Taylor right now.
01:00:12You know, Steve, this fight has been fought
01:00:14at a pace and a distance that's favorable to Taylor.
01:00:18It's discouraging that he could be behind already
01:00:20at this juncture because the fight's going his way
01:00:23in so many different ways,
01:00:24but he's not being effective from round five or six on.
01:00:28We haven't seen the right often enough
01:00:30from Jermaine Taylor, his big punt.
01:00:32There's a sweeping left hook attempt
01:00:34missing wildly by Abraham.
01:00:39He just throws that out there to see what sticks.
01:00:44And at this point in the fight,
01:00:45yeah, Taylor's buying time by punting that jab.
01:00:49He's not scoring enough points.
01:00:51So what you're saying, in essence,
01:00:53is abandon plan A and go to plan B.
01:00:57Well, I'd like to see more right hands from Jermaine Taylor.
01:01:00It's his money punt.
01:01:03I think he wants to see it too.
01:01:05He's just waiting for the moment.
01:01:07And Ozell Nelson said he wanted to see it more.
01:01:13His trainer has known him since the age of 12.
01:01:19Nice stiff jab there by Abraham.
01:01:23Return jab by Taylor, but Abraham's just tough.
01:01:29Abraham looks a little winded.
01:01:32And a little red in the face.
01:01:35But he's the shorter fighter with the shorter reach,
01:01:37and his jab is the better jab.
01:01:39And Abraham, again, he's got his hands up high now,
01:01:41but now they're back low again.
01:01:44He's confident.
01:01:45There's a slapping left hook,
01:01:46goes to the body, missing wildly with the right.
01:01:55And attacked by Abraham.
01:02:00A flurry of punching.
01:02:02The right blocked by the gloves,
01:02:04but it pushed Taylor back.
01:02:22Abraham continues to pour on the pressure.
01:02:27What's gonna stop him is counter-punching,
01:02:29and Taylor hasn't done any of it.
01:02:30And we wonder how much gas is left in Taylor's tank.
01:02:36But it seems okay.
01:02:37And see, there's no sense of urgency from Abraham,
01:02:39and as these rounds mount and he keeps winning them,
01:02:42there's probably not a need for a sense of urgency.
01:02:44He senses that he's climbing ahead on the cards
01:02:47if he hasn't climbed ahead already.
01:02:48Does he want to make a statement
01:02:50in front of 14,000 hometown fans?
01:02:52Who knows what's going on in his head.
01:03:00Abraham driving Taylor back.
01:03:02That jab has been his best weapon.
01:03:17So we are set for the championship rounds
01:03:19of the Super Six.
01:03:22Now you see how smart Abraham is
01:03:23and why he's an accurate puncher.
01:03:25Taylor puts his gloves up.
01:03:26What does Abraham do?
01:03:28Punches around him.
01:03:29Suddenly goes wide with his shots.
01:03:33And Jermaine Taylor is not as effective
01:03:36when he plays peekaboo as Arthur Abraham is,
01:03:38that's for sure.
01:03:48Abraham battered Taylor in that last round
01:03:51with a variety of punches.
01:03:53They're having a little problem with the trunks,
01:03:55so they're taping it up.
01:03:56Malcolm Garrett, the cut man, is doing his best
01:04:00to fix the problem.
01:04:02Round 11 from Berlin, Germany.
01:04:07Group stage one, the first fight
01:04:08of the Super Six World Boxing Classic.
01:04:13It's been a very difficult second half of the fight
01:04:16for American Jermaine Taylor.
01:04:20Arthur Abraham, the adopted son here in Berlin,
01:04:24originally from Armenia.
01:04:25Ooh, that looked like a low blow by Taylor.
01:04:27And the referee was on the other side.
01:04:28He missed it entirely.
01:04:32Abraham, a co-favorite with Mickel Kessler
01:04:35to win the whole thing.
01:04:39And he's more than a two-to-one favorite
01:04:41to beat Taylor tonight.
01:04:44We've talked a lot about Taylor fading, Steve.
01:04:47The irony now is that if he can't worry about fading,
01:04:49he has to accelerate if he wants to win this thing.
01:04:55As a knockout, a guy who's never been down
01:04:57with a titanium chin, literally.
01:05:00He has titanium steel and 22 screws
01:05:06implanted surgically into his chin.
01:05:08That coming after the bruising fight with Edison Moran.
01:05:13So he does literally have a steel jaw.
01:05:18Nice right hand over the top by Jermaine Taylor.
01:05:22Got the attention of Abraham.
01:05:26Abraham back into his peek-a-boo style.
01:05:30But coming forward,
01:05:32Taylor has to keep firing that right hand
01:05:34and he has to fire it hard.
01:05:41There it is.
01:05:47Body attacked by Abraham.
01:05:52And he's got it.
01:05:59Steve, he's a stronger fighter.
01:06:00It's just, it's not anything more than that.
01:06:03There's no question.
01:06:04Yeah, when he punches,
01:06:05there's just more force on his shots,
01:06:07whether it's one shot or four shots.
01:06:13And his boxing prompts are coming undone.
01:06:21He's got a shoulder pad.
01:06:25More information than we need, you might say.
01:06:29Turning into an R-rated boxing man.
01:06:33Meanwhile, Arthur Abraham continues to march on,
01:06:37pushing Taylor back with the right off the head.
01:06:42Ripped trunks or not.
01:06:4910 seconds left in the 11th.
01:06:51He continues to push Taylor back.
01:06:53Taylor, frustrated.
01:06:56And you can't counterpunch when you're moving backwards.
01:06:59Time!
01:07:15Got to have it.
01:07:16You got to have it, man.
01:07:16You got to be smart, though.
01:07:18Can't get caught with no dumb shit.
01:07:21Come on, come on.
01:07:26Don't sit down here.
01:07:27Don't sit down here.
01:07:29Last round now, Arthur.
01:07:32I'm not sitting down here.
01:07:34Come on, come on.
01:07:36It's over, it's over, it's over.
01:07:38Come on, come on.
01:07:39It's over.
01:07:40I spent.
01:07:41It's over, I don't have anything left.
01:07:43Come on, come on, come on.
01:07:45Come here.
01:07:46Come on, come on.
01:07:48Come here.
01:07:50Come here.
01:07:54You need to bust a right wave.
01:07:59So three minutes left in this fight.
01:08:02They'll touch gloves,
01:08:03and Jermaine Taylor summoning up
01:08:06for a dramatic come from behind victory here
01:08:10against a guy who has never been on the canvas
01:08:13in his career.
01:08:15But Taylor also, who has to know he's behind on points, has to stay on his feet so as not
01:08:29to lose another point in the Super 6.
01:08:31So he's got to be careful not to get caught by Abraham.
01:08:35All Abraham has to do is play defense.
01:08:49He knows he's well ahead.
01:08:50But I don't see a sense of urgency here from Taylor.
01:08:51Not at all.
01:08:52This looks like one of the first or second rounds of this fight where Abraham was content
01:09:06to just play peek-a-boo, and Taylor poked away.
01:09:07Can't do any poking now.
01:09:08He just can't get through that defense.
01:09:09Well, the only way to really land flush against Abraham is to counterpunch, and Taylor hasn't
01:09:10been able to do it.
01:09:11He's been pushed back when Abraham attacked.
01:09:12Abraham, too strong.
01:09:24And he just keeps—it is a body shot, but Abraham just keeps alternating from offense
01:09:31to defense.
01:09:32There's no fluidity, no rhythm, and that's also got to be tough on Jermaine Taylor.
01:09:37You just never know what's coming.
01:09:39I don't know what's coming.
01:09:41And, Steve, it's so tough to win on points on the road
01:09:44in Germany or in anywhere else.
01:09:46Last 70 title fights here.
01:09:48This isn't the title fight.
01:09:50Here goes Abraham again.
01:09:53No answer from Taylor.
01:09:56But the last 70 title fights here,
01:09:57the record of the visiting fighter
01:10:00left hooked by Abraham.
01:10:0211, 56, and 3.
01:10:04Only two fighters have won on points here.
01:10:06Abraham's looking for that extra point
01:10:08in the knockout.
01:10:1248 seconds to go in the fight.
01:10:15There's a heavy right to the head by Abraham.
01:10:17It's looking like round 12 of the Frosch fight
01:10:19a little bit to him.
01:10:20Interesting.
01:10:23Except Taylor's still coming forward against Frosch.
01:10:25He was moving straight back the last minute of that round.
01:10:3130 seconds to go.
01:10:34And Taylor needs a knockout.
01:10:45Oh, and down goes Taylor!
01:10:47What a shame!
01:10:494, 5, 6, 7, 8.
01:10:54It's over.
01:10:55They won't even finish the count.
01:10:57He's going to get himself three points,
01:10:59and let's just hope Jermaine Taylor is all right.
01:11:04He just short-circuited Jermaine Taylor
01:11:06in the final seconds of the fight
01:11:09with a massive shot.
01:11:20And it happened so fast, Steve.
01:11:22Let's just really hope he's okay.
01:11:33What a dramatic ending to this fight.
01:11:38Arthur Abraham ends it in emphatic fashion.
01:11:42Thank goodness Taylor's up.
01:11:45Seems to be okay.
01:11:52As Abraham salutes the champion,
01:11:58as Abraham salutes the crowd.
01:12:03Final seconds of the 12th round,
01:12:07a knockout for Arthur Abraham.
01:12:11Vluov and Kessler looking on,
01:12:13and maybe in his mind wondering down the road,
01:12:17whoo!
01:12:19That's pretty impressive, says Nichol.
01:12:24Do I really want to fight this guy and see what happens?
01:12:27Do I really want to fight this guy and see what happens?
01:12:29And, Steve, we were saying,
01:12:31comparisons to the 12th round of the Frost Fight
01:12:34for Jermaine Taylor.
01:12:35A little scary that he ended up getting stopped
01:12:37almost the exact same time
01:12:39as he got stopped in the 12th round of the Frost Fight.
01:12:48Well, the fans get what they came to see.
01:12:52An Arthur Abraham knockout.
01:12:56Absolute joy of his adoring fans here in Berlin.
01:13:01The start of what he hopes is a march towards supremacy
01:13:04in the super middleweight division.
01:13:07Able to clear the first hurdle
01:13:11by beating the biggest name in the super six.
01:13:22There it is. It was the right hand.
01:13:25A quick, bullet right hand,
01:13:28set up by a wide left hook.
01:13:31And the right was right down the middle.
01:13:32Taylor's been keeping his gloves up,
01:13:34but that was between the gloves, right on the button.
01:13:37Jermaine Taylor's eyes were closed
01:13:38before he hit the canvas.
01:13:44Maybe that's why it's so hard to counter Arthur Abraham.
01:13:47Taylor started using his right hand there.
01:13:50You see it in that last replay.
01:13:52And before he could counter with the right hand,
01:13:54Abraham zinged him with his own right,
01:13:56and that was the end of the fight.
01:13:58And they told him in the corner before the 12th,
01:14:01don't get caught.
01:14:03He did.
01:14:07So, two points for the win for Abraham,
01:14:10another point for the knockout,
01:14:11so three points all told.
01:14:13And he's in first place.
01:14:15Very good.
01:14:17No points for Taylor,
01:14:20who really needed this fight
01:14:21to get his career back on track,
01:14:23falls to 28-4 and 1.
01:14:26Those four losses coming in his last five fights,
01:14:29and three by knockout.
01:14:30Yeah, exactly.
01:14:31The fact that this fight ended with a sudden knockout
01:14:34like it did is very damaging for Jermaine Taylor.
01:14:38If he had lost the decision where he fought okay
01:14:40the first half and faded the second half a little bit.
01:14:45As the giant looks on,
01:14:48Voluev.
01:14:51Taylor is not eliminated.
01:14:52He, uh, continues on in the tournament.
01:14:54He'll fight Andre Ward.
01:14:56Abraham will next beat Andre Durell.
01:14:57Here it is.
01:14:59No, Taylor hit it, hit the ground hard.
01:15:02Abraham, patient throughout.
01:15:04It's almost as if he sensed it would come.
01:15:08And it did with, what, 11 seconds left in the last round.
01:15:11A pulsating right hand by Arthur Abraham.
01:15:15Ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen...
01:15:20Ladies and gentlemen, before we give the official time,
01:15:24a round of applause for this young man
01:15:26from Little Rock, Arkansas, U.S.A.,
01:15:28who came here to Berlin to show the world
01:15:31that he has more courage than anyone can imagine,
01:15:34Jermaine Taylor.
01:15:36The end comes at 2 minutes, 54 seconds
01:15:40of round number 12.
01:15:43Now advancing in the super six,
01:15:46super middleweight world boxing classic,
01:15:49the winner by knockout,
01:15:51King Arthur!
01:15:56Arthur Abraham goes to 31-0 with 25 knockouts.
01:16:01We'll be back with more from Berlin later.
01:16:04Right now, let's go back to Nottingham, England,
01:16:06and Gus Johnson.
01:16:08Earlier tonight, the arrivals of our second co-feature
01:16:11fighters, Carl Fratsch is 32 years old,
01:16:14an unbeaten world champion, and arguably
01:16:17the biggest hitter in the super six tournament.
01:16:20He's also a hard, hard, hard, hard, hard,
01:16:23such a tough guy to beat.
01:16:25But before we go into your matchup tonight,
01:16:27let's talk about the fight between
01:16:29the currently undefeated
01:16:31U.S.A. champion,
01:16:33Arthur Abraham.
01:16:35in the Super 6 tournament.
01:16:37He's also a hard, tough man
01:16:39who's proven himself at the highest level.
01:16:42Tonight, he intends to send Andre Durell
01:16:44back to the States a broken fighter.
01:16:49But watch Andre Durell once,
01:16:51and you'll come to the same conclusion as everybody else.
01:16:54His potential is unmistakable.
01:16:57He's been perfect as a pro,
01:16:58and moving up in class tonight,
01:17:00he plans on racing right past Karl Fratch.
01:17:03Speed indeed kills.
01:17:05Durell is the Super 6's most dangerous fighter.

01:18:58to Steve Albert and Steve Farlow.
01:19:02Arthur Abraham, I know Johannes will help us translate,
01:19:05but you want to answer the first question in English.
01:19:07What was your impression of the fight?
01:19:12Oh, it's a great fight.
01:19:14It was a great fight.
01:19:15Great KO.
01:19:17And Terry is a good fighter.
01:19:20Maybe I am better.
01:19:21Did Arthur think he was clearly ahead
01:19:24going into the last round?
01:19:26Of course, yes.
01:19:27I think I win a pound.
01:19:30I was ahead on points.
01:19:32I was ahead on points.
01:19:34And maybe...
01:19:35I think I tried to go for the KO.
01:19:38All the time I tried to go for the KO.
01:19:41But I know I was ahead on points.
01:19:43The knockout.
01:19:44Can you describe what enabled him
01:19:46to land such a devastating punch
01:19:49when he hadn't really hurt Taylor badly until that point?
01:19:52I think I was ahead on points.
01:19:54I think I was ahead on points.
01:19:56And maybe I tried to go for the KO.
01:19:58But I know I wasn't hurt badly until that point.
01:20:01Can you describe how you managed to land such a great punch?
01:20:04You didn't hit Taylor as hard as you did before.
01:20:07Can you describe how you managed to land this punch?
01:20:11Well, as you can see, I only waited two and a half minutes
01:20:16for this punch.
01:20:18I was looking for this gap to hit him, and it worked.
01:20:21As an expert can see, I was just waiting
01:20:23for the KO to happen.
01:20:25In the tournament, you get one extra point
01:20:27if you score a knockout.
01:20:29Was that on his mind during the fight?
01:20:31You get one extra point for a KO in this tournament.
01:20:33Did you think about that during the fight?
01:20:35No. For me, it's only win.
01:20:37Very important. No more.
01:20:39Did Taylor hurt him with anything?
01:20:41Did he feel Taylor's punching power at all?
01:20:43Did Taylor hurt him with anything?
01:20:45Did you feel Taylor's punching power at all?
01:20:47Yes, of course.
01:20:49Maybe not so hard.
01:20:51Doesn't hit hard?
01:20:53No. It's normal.
01:20:55Not so hard.
01:20:57His second fight in the tournament
01:20:59will be against Andre Durell.
01:21:01What does he know about Durell,
01:21:03who will fight later?
01:21:05And how does he see that fight?
01:21:07Your second fight is against Andre Durell.
01:21:09What do you know about Durell,
01:21:11and how do you see the fight?
01:21:13So far, I've only focused on Taylor.
01:21:15I haven't seen a single Durell fight.
01:21:17That's why I can't say anything.
01:21:19Right now, my full focus
01:21:21has been on Taylor,
01:21:23and I haven't seen a single fight of Durell.
01:21:25But now I will start looking at him
01:21:27and preparing for him.
01:21:29We wish you a lot of luck in the next round,
01:21:31and this was a great victory, Arthur.
01:21:33Congratulations.
01:21:35Thank you very much.
01:21:37I hope I go to America
01:21:39and I will take America.
01:21:41This is my next plan.
01:21:43Thank you, Arthur.
01:21:45Thank you, Arthur.
01:21:47Thank you very much, Steve.
01:21:49And this is what they're fighting for, folks.
01:21:51The Super 6 World Boxing Classic Cup
01:21:53will go to the winner,
01:21:55Arthur Abraham,
01:21:57out of the gates first
01:21:59with an incredible finish.
01:22:01Now, with that 12th round knockout,
01:22:03he receives 3 points.
01:22:052 points for the win,
01:22:071 point for the knockout.
01:22:09I'm joined by my partners,
01:22:11Al Bernstein and former light heavyweight champion
01:22:13Antonio Tarver.
01:22:15It wasn't pretty,
01:22:17but very effective.
01:22:19Arthur Abraham with a devastating right hand.
01:22:21Yeah, you know, in some ways,
01:22:23it was vintage Arthur Abraham
01:22:25in that he won with his defense, his chin,
01:22:27and those sudden bursts of power.
01:22:29But he wasn't as precise
01:22:31as we would normally see him.
01:22:33However, he served notice certainly
01:22:35that in this Super 6 tourney,
01:22:37he is a force to be reckoned with, Antonio.
01:22:39Most definitely he is.
01:22:41I can look at Taylor and see that
01:22:43he jabbed effectively,
01:22:45but nothing seemed to get through.
01:22:47And when he did his work to the body,
01:22:49he was either worn, or questioned,
01:22:51or even taking a point away for the low blow.
01:22:53So that had to be discouraging in itself.
01:22:55But I thought he fought a good fight,
01:22:57but I see why Abraham
01:22:59is one of the favorites to win this tournament.
01:23:01Arthur Abraham doing a fine job.
01:23:03He now improves to 31-0
01:23:05with 25 KOs.
01:23:07He is the shortest
01:23:09and the smallest man
01:23:11in the Super 6 field.
01:23:13So, Jermaine Taylor,
01:23:15he fought 11-2.
01:23:17Very well,
01:23:19but the last few seconds turned out to be,
01:23:21as Yogi Berra would say,
01:23:23deja vu all over again.
01:23:25And Steve Farhood
01:23:27caught up with him outside his dressing room.
01:23:31Jermaine, most important thing, how do you feel right now?
01:23:33You okay?
01:23:35Yeah, I'm a little hurt, man.
01:23:37But it's coming along with the territory.
01:23:40I'm hurt more than anything.
01:23:42I trained hard.
01:23:44I gave it all I had.
01:23:46I didn't get the victory.
01:23:48Going into the 12th round, what was your mindset?
01:23:50Where did you think you were in the fight?
01:23:52I don't know. I couldn't even tell you, man.
01:23:54I was just fighting.
01:23:56I don't even remember.
01:23:58Did you get caught
01:24:00with a shot you didn't see?
01:24:02Because he didn't seem to hurt you really before that.
01:24:04Yeah, that's what I was thinking, man.
01:24:06I thought I was in the best shape of my life.
01:24:08I was just training hard.
01:24:10And he just caught me.
01:24:12It was a very strong fight. I'll give it to him.
01:24:14In your mind, would it have been,
01:24:16even if you had lost on points,
01:24:18would it have been a lot better if you had done the distance?
01:24:20Do you feel that way?
01:24:22Is a loss just a loss?
01:24:24A loss is a loss to me, man.
01:24:26This ain't the first time.
01:24:28This is boxing.
01:24:30You got to expect the worst, man.
01:24:32It's a hard sport.
01:24:34Jermaine, good luck to you.
01:24:36Jermaine Taylor,
01:24:38tough night for
01:24:40the former undisputed
01:24:42middleweight champion of the world.
01:24:44Similarly to his fight against Carl Froch,
01:24:46he fades in the end
01:24:48and loses to Arthur Abraham
01:24:50virtue of the 12th round knockout.
01:24:52Al, first of all, I'm sorry.
01:24:54I stole your
01:24:56Yogi Berra line, but that's yours.
01:24:58But how about
01:25:00Jermaine Taylor? Tough, tough night for him.
01:25:02Yeah, you know, the similarity, obviously,
01:25:04to the Froch loss.
01:25:06However, in this case,
01:25:08he was behind on all scorecards.
01:25:10107-103, 106-102,
01:25:12and 105-103.
01:25:14We kind of thought that 105-103
01:25:16score was a little closer to reality.
01:25:18Once again, for Jermaine Taylor,
01:25:20excellent early in the fight,
01:25:22but not good in the second half.
01:25:24And clearly, this does raise questions
01:25:26of how he turns things around
01:25:28and gets himself into the fray
01:25:30in a better way for the rest of this tournament.
01:25:32He fought well throughout the fight,
01:25:34but it just seems like that knockout loss
01:25:36seemed to catch up with him.
01:25:38Now, we are in a tournament based on points,
01:25:40so we don't want to write Jermaine Taylor
01:25:42off the chest yet.
01:25:44He has an opportunity to redeem himself,
01:25:46but how do you do it
01:25:48with that in your mind constantly
01:25:50that he cannot finish on time?
01:25:52All right.
01:25:54One down, two to go
01:25:56in Group Stage 1
01:25:58of the Super 6 World Boxing Classic.
01:26:00For middleweights coming up
01:26:02from Nottingham, England,
01:26:04Carl Froch puts his WBC title
01:26:06on the line against the speedster
01:26:08American Andre Durell.
