00:00Damaging winds and large hail are likely for parts of northern NSW today, with thunderstorms
00:06developing this afternoon and evening.
00:08Winds and hail are possible across much broader areas of southeast Qld and northeast NSW.
00:14We can see that in today's thunderstorm forecaster map.
00:18Our green areas show where storms are possible.
00:21Storms are possible today through much of central and southeast Qld, northeast NSW,
00:26getting all the way down through the Hunter and even to the Blue Mountains to the west
00:30of Sydney.
00:31But it's the yellow and red areas we want to focus on.
00:34Those areas show where severe storms are possible, if not likely.
00:39Those areas cover parts of central and southeast Qld, notably impacting the Sunshine Coast
00:44and Gold Coast, but not Brisbane.
00:46Brisbane is more likely to see standard, non-severe storms today, where we may see those severe
00:51storms impacting the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.
00:54Through northeast NSW, we've got a fairly widespread severe thunderstorm risk that does
00:59extend all the way down to the Hunter as well.
01:02In those severe storm areas, we may see damaging wind gusts and large hail.
01:07Heavy rainfall is less likely today, although we may still see some short, sharp downbursts
01:12with any storms moving directly overhead.
01:15Damaging winds and large hail may lead to trees and branches being brought down, potentially
01:20impacting property or cars and leading to some damage.
01:24We may also see some power outages or disruptions to traffic and transport thanks to these severe
01:30weather impacts.
01:32Really focusing in on where severe storms are most likely today, we see that risk marked
01:36in red through the northern rivers and mid-north coast of NSW, including some of those adjacent
01:42ranges.
01:43That means areas in the vicinity of Byron Bay, Lismore and Coffs Harbour may well see
01:48those damaging winds and large hail through the course of today.
01:52Storms are likely to start developing through the afternoon, continuing as we go into the
01:56evening period.
01:59What exactly is triggering these storms today?
02:02We do have the tail end of a cold front brushing up the northern NSW coast, interacting with
02:08warm, moist air coming down from the north.
02:11That's generating these areas of showers and thunderstorms through northeast NSW and parts
02:17of southeast Queensland.
02:19As we go into tomorrow, that storm risk will continue for many areas, gradually starting
02:24to ease back later in the day as this trough moves away from the east coast.
02:30As we continue overnight tomorrow into Saturday morning, we will likely continue to see some
02:35patchy showers through these areas, but the storm risk will really drop away over the
02:40weekend.
02:41Tomorrow, there is still a risk of storms in some parts, though we can see these green
02:46areas of possible storms extending from around Rockhampton all the way down to the NSW border
02:52and then through to the southern parts of the mid-north coast.
02:54But notably, severe storms are not forecast for Friday, only for today, for Thursday,
03:01for the afternoon and evening period.
03:03So look, we really urge all communities through these areas to keep a close eye on the Bureau's
03:07website and social media through the course of this afternoon and evening in case we do
03:12need to issue any thunderstorm warnings for what is starting to develop.
03:17Stay safe and we'll catch you in the next update.
