The Bristol Cheesemonger has soft launched their second store in Bristol on Gloucester Road.

The independent cheese store is run by Husband and Wife team, Jenny and Oli, who ‘spend their time visiting farms and dairies and tasting a significant amount of cheese’ to offer customers the best produce in the region.

It started off as a pop-up at Hart’s bakery 13 years ago before the couple opened their first store at Wapping Wharf seven years ago.

The Bristol Cheesemonger soft launched their second store on Gloucester Road yesterday (October 23) and filled a gap in the community.

The venue was formerly a beer shop, which was fitted very differently to The Bristol Cheesemonger’s need, Oli explained.

“The staff members have been doing an amazing job. Danny and Poppy have been running the Wapping Wharf shop while I’ve been in here every day learning how to DIY things like the plumbing with a mate.

“Everything from installing new plasterboards to plumbing, enormous amounts of sanding and varnishing, painting, tiling... we did all of it.”

Despite being a soft launch and not much advertisement being done, the shop has been very well received by the community, Oli commented.

The new store will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm.

00:00We're just outside the Bristol Cheesemongers on Gloucester Road, which has soft lunch.
00:05Let's step inside to see what this new store has to offer.
00:08We've had a shop at Wapping Wharf for seven years now, and that's going great, and we
00:17just thought North Bristol needed more of the Bristol Cheesemongers, so we've just opened
00:22this one on Gloucester Road as well.
00:25Since Murray's, the butcher, that used to be here closed, they used to have a cheese
00:28counter, and then since they closed, we felt that Gloucester Road really could do with
00:35it.
00:36There isn't really a cheese offer here, but there's loads of other amazing food and drink
00:40related businesses on this stretch, and so we felt it slotted in nicely.
00:46And the other big thing is just the amount of space.
00:49So we've been running the wholesale, retail, and online out of two and a half shipping
00:56containers.
00:58It's grown to the point, especially on the wholesale, where it was kind of impractical.
01:04So this space will allow us to sort of grow into it a bit.
01:08We've got two floors here, so we'll be able to run that side of things upstairs.
01:11At the moment, it's 100% retail.
01:14Next week, the online and wholesale will move here, and hopefully next year we'll be building
01:19a small maturation room on site as well.
01:22It's been absolutely lovely.
01:23This is only day one, and it's a soft launch, so we didn't really announce that we were
01:27opening particularly, but the community's been so supportive.
01:33So people have been walking past.
01:36As soon as we got the sign up outside, people kept popping in, going, like, when are you
01:40going to be opening?
01:41We're so excited.
01:42Gloucester Road really needs a cheese monger.
01:44Even before that, people were asking, oh, what's it going to be?
01:48What's it going to be?
01:49And then local businesses have been the same, and all day today, we've just had people
01:53popping in and being excited about the soft opening.
01:56Yeah, it's been wonderful.
01:58What cheese would you recommend to customers that pop by to try?
02:03Oh, that is such a good question.
02:07We have been rotating things a little bit.
02:10We've brought everything in here.
02:11It's tasting really good at the moment.
02:13All of our cheeses come directly from the producer, and we work really closely with
02:18them.
02:19So really, we just grab the first thing that comes to hand.
02:22We've got some Merry Wife here, which has been tasting absolutely fantastic.
02:27So that's on the board.
02:29We've got the Western Cheddar.
02:31It's a local absolute classic.
02:34It's endless.
02:35It's endless.
