Husqvarna’s all-new 2024 Vitpilen 401 and Svartpilen 401 receive a major overhaul, improving performance, comfort, and adjustability. These updates were originally granted to the 2024 KTM 390 Duke. But Husqvarna's distinct styling gives riders additional options on the showroom floor. The 2024 Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 and Svartpilen 401 may be nearly identical, but there are a few distinct changes designating one as a roadster and the other as a scrambler. We breakdown what it's like to ride both bikes to help decide which one is right for you.

00:00Alright we're out here in the beautiful hills of Malibu and we're about to go
00:04ride the all-new 2024 Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 and Svartpilen 401. Heavily
00:10updated for model year 2024. You got a new engine, new chassis, all new
00:15electronics package, full color 5-inch TFT display on both bikes and really the
00:21difference here between the Vitpilen, the Roadster, and the Svartpilen, the
00:26Scrambler is going to be styling and then of course the wheel setup. You have
00:31cast wheels and street tires on the Vitpilen, spoke wheels and knobby style
00:36tires on the Svartpilen. The rider triangle is a little bit different.
00:39You have a slightly taller handlebar on the Svartpilen right here but at the
00:44core they're both basically the same bike just with a little bit different
00:47styling and tweaks to give you a different riding experience out on the
00:51road. We're gonna go for a ride, throw the helmet on, and break down the
00:55Alright, here we go. Starting the day on the Vitpilen. Let's take a look at the
01:01dash real quick. Get in there, this is where you can adjust your ride modes.
01:06You got these buttons over here that gets you in ride mode, street, rain. So
01:13you got two ride modes and the TC, the traction control settings, are dedicated
01:19to each ride mode. So street is gonna have one traction control setting and
01:24then rain will be a little bit of a more intrusive traction control setting. And
01:28then if you want you can come down here and completely disable, oops, completely
01:36disable traction control somehow. There we go.
01:40Boom. Oh, you got to hit the button. Boom. Select. Hold. Press keep throttle closed.
01:48Release button. Boom. Traction control off. Let's go over here too. You got two ABS
01:54settings. You got road and then supermoto. It'll disactivate traction control at the
02:01rear wheel and it's a little less intrusive at the front. So maybe you'll
02:06still be able to do a no stoppie or two. Alright, then you can see on your main
02:09display right here, down at the bottom, it'll just give you a quick reference at
02:13what your level, your settings are. So you got, we're in street mode,
02:17supermoto, ABS and traction control turned off. Got a gear indicator. There's a
02:23digital tachometer. And then this thing's, both bikes, the Vitpilen and the
02:29Svartpilen 401 come standard with a quick shifter. You can turn it off if you
02:35feel the need to. And yeah, the big difference between these bikes is gonna
02:40be really the wheels. They're both 17 inch wheels front and back on both
02:44models. But the Vitpilen is going to have, you know, cast wheels where the Svartpilen
02:50has spoked wheels with some Pirelli Scorpion sort of knobby tires on it.
02:56So one of the big changes they did to the Vitpilen as far as just the
03:02ergonomics from the predecessor is they just, they opened up the rider
03:07triangle, made it a little bit more of an upright sitting position. They got away
03:13from the clip-on style handlebars and got this one piece kind of flat bar. It's
03:18definitely lower than the Svartpilen, but the, kind of reminds me a little bit of
03:23like a mountain bike style handlebar. So just a little bit more comfortable, puts
03:27less pressure on your wrist. And these again are the big updates that the Duke
03:34390 got earlier this year. So with the electronics package, the dash,
03:39updated styling, and this now larger 399cc engine. They said that they, there
03:47was an effort to increase torque, but horsepower should stay the same from the
03:52previous models because of tiered classes and, you know, you're up in places
03:57outside of, licensed classes outside of the United States. So right off the bat
04:03this thing, very direct throttle. It's a ride-by-wire system and it's nice. You
04:09feel a little bit of buzz just from a single, but very, very brief. Obviously
04:14we're only in, you know, we're in fifth gear going 43 miles per hour. I'm already
04:18really liking this riding position over the predecessor Vitpilen. This is a lot
04:24more of like a standard motorcycle sitting position. Very neutral, something
04:28you could put a lot of miles in and be comfortable where the previous Vitpilen
04:34kind of had sort of like sport bike-ish ergonomics and feel. You're bent over, a
04:39lot of pressure on your wrist. We're gonna work our way out of the city here. I'll
04:43start the first half of the day, I'll be on the Vitpilen and then after lunch
04:47I'll hop on the Svartpilen and yeah, we'll get to see just how good this new
04:53401 is. Another quick little first impression as we're just kind of getting
04:57up on this back road, getting up to highway speeds, is the seat on the
05:02Vitpilen, I'm sure it'll be the same on the Svartpilen, we'll find out later, but it's
05:06just really flat and wide and it's comfortable. The foam is not super soft
05:11and cushy, but I think that's a good thing. When the seats get too soft and
05:15cushy they might feel initially more comfortable, but after you spend, you know,
05:18an hour or so in the saddle you start to develop some uncomfortable spots. So
05:25right away I'm just already like, wow, between the, you know, the handlebar
05:31change on the Vitpilen and the seat, I'm liking this rider triangle for not
05:37only some sporty riding like we're gonna get into later, but just commuting and
05:42slant highway miles. Starting to work our way into the canyons and right away, as I
05:46expected, just with spending time on the KTM models of this platform, is
05:51this thing just feels very agile, flickable with this, you know, wider
05:57handlebar. The leverage to, you know, turn the bike into a corner is really good
06:01and it just feels very planted on the side of the tire. We haven't gotten too
06:06far into the canyons, but this first impression it's reminding me a lot of
06:10that RC 390 I like so much. So you got adjustable suspension. Right now it
06:16definitely has, you know, a pretty taut, stiff feeling to it, which will be good
06:20in these canyons and then maybe we can play around with some clickers and see
06:24how the, how that changes for, you know, city and urban riding. Soften up the
06:31fork. The fork is a separate function fork, so you have five clicks of
06:36adjustment on both sides. You have compression on the left, rebound on the
06:39right. The shock has preload adjustment and rebound adjustment. So pretty, pretty
06:47good levels of adjustment in the suspension category and, again, that's
06:51the whole theme with this bike. For a sub $6,000 bike, you have adjustable
06:57suspension and a pretty good electronics package that's highly adjustable as well
07:02for this lightweight category. There's some of those little G-outs and stuff on
07:05these back roads and the bike just stays very composed with the suspension being
07:11on the sporty side and this chassis. One of the things they worked on this
07:16chassis is all new from the predecessor and they actually made it a little bit
07:20bigger and wider with the the intention of increasing the torsional rigidity for
07:28that, you know, to reduce any wallowing or stuff on the side of the tire coming
07:34through a corner. So this thing just, it just tips into a
07:39corner so easily, you know, it's a lightweight bike and then when it gets
07:46on the side of the tire, it feels very planted. It's just a very confidence
07:50inspiring motorcycle. See, maybe we'll get into some tighter corners, get into
07:56some harder braking zones. A little bit of the front brakes I've had to use so
08:00far. They've got good bite, good power, so we'll see what happens when you, if I
08:05really start trying to, you know, leave the braking late. But so far, very little
08:10buzzing through the handlebar or foot pegs, really comfortable seat, torquey
08:16little engine. It's got good revs, you know, you can rev the thing up, it still
08:19makes power. But I've already just noticed a little bit from the RC 390, the
08:242022 model, where it was still on that smaller engine, somewhere around like
08:29373 cc's, now up to 399. You just do notice that little bit more torque, a
08:36little bit more of a torque hit when you're rolling on the throttle at, you
08:39know, maybe 2-3,000 rpm. We're in second gear, it has, you know, the low-end torque
08:45to stay in second right here, but then the legs to, you know, connect to the next
08:49corner. Brakes are sharp, feeling them. Alright, we just got out of the twisties, so a
08:54little recap, first impressions of the Vitpilen 401 in the twisties. Super
09:01planted chassis, very taut suspension, doesn't wallow, doesn't blow through the
09:06stroke, get on the front brake hard, it doesn't have a bunch of fork dive, and
09:10then the engine has that increased torque that just helps the thing get out
09:15of a hole in second gear, and then the thing has good power all the way through
09:19up to the rev limiter that you can just connect a corner, like those tight ones,
09:24just stay in second gear and you can connect a corner, use the torque down low
09:28to get out of the hole, and then just run the thing right up into the rev limiter
09:31before you get on the brakes for the next corner. So, and then we're in street
09:37mode, we've been in street mode with TC off and Supermoto ABS, so been able to do
09:42kind of skid into a corner a couple times, so that's cool, and and then the
09:49brakes, the brakes are nice and touchy and responsive, and the dash is easy to
09:55read, it's got the gear indicator, which I really like, so the thing doesn't, isn't
10:00buzzy or vibratey, it's just, so far, you know, no complaints at all, the seat is
10:06comfortable, this, the new rider triangle for the Vitpilen, a little less
10:11aggressive, a little bit more upright, is much appreciated, this is exactly what I
10:16was looking for out of the Vitpilen, was never really into that, you know, the
10:21leaned over, the sort of sport bike clip-on feel of the Vitpilen before.
10:26Now that we're out of the canyons, you do kind of feel a lot of the bumps on the
10:30road, the road imperfections, you know, you feel it through the the handlebar and
10:34just the entire bike, because of that suspension setup being a little bit more
10:38on the stiffer and sportier side for this Vitpilen right here, but I don't
10:44mind it at all, I'd much rather have it be a little bit stiff on my morning
10:49commute, that way when I get out onto the canyons on the weekends, it has good hold
10:54up, but I should say that it's also adjustable, so you know, you have preload
10:59adjustment in the rear and rebound, and then up front you have rebound and
11:03compression, so if, and I should also note that I'm a pretty light rider, right
11:09around 120-125 pounds, and my height is 5'7", so smaller rider, so definitely if
11:18you're bigger and heavier, you might not notice the suspension feeling
11:24stiffer on the sort of city and urban streets, so a lot of times they can be a
11:31little soft and spongy, which, you know, can be comfortable and nice for, you know,
11:37commuting and city riding, but then you get out into the twist season, if it's
11:43not adjustable, you're just kind of stuck, get out into the twist season, the
11:46thing's just coming unglued and wallowing, where this bike does not do
11:50that. You have a shift indicator light, which right now, that's why the
11:57screen's all yellow, it's in the engine braking mode still, so
12:04you can't adjust the shift indicator light to come on a further RPM
12:10before this bike reaches 600 miles. It's still in the braking period, so maybe for
12:18these press units, they're not as concerned about us revving them up past
12:216,000 RPM, but it's just something for you consumers to know, hey, if you're
12:26still in that braking period, they're letting you know that you should kind of
12:30short shift the thing until you reach that 600 mile mark, and I would assume
12:35then they would probably want to do an oil change, that braking oil change, and
12:40then you'll be able to adjust the shift indicator light and rev the thing and
12:44have it come, you know, illuminate at your desired RPM. All right, we're on this
12:50really smooth mountain road right here.
12:54Get to keep carving up these back roads, which is just where this Vitpilen
13:02likes to be. Really nice and sporty.
13:08It just transitions so easily. A little bit of handlebar, just a little bit of
13:13input into the handlebar, and just kind of shift your weight, and then you get on
13:17the side of the tire. It just feels so planted and confidence-inspiring. The
13:21quick shifter works really well, both up and down. Just makes it nice, just bang
13:27your shifts, which especially on a bike like this, a lighter weight bike, is nice
13:31because, you know, you got to work the shifter a little bit more. You're gonna
13:36be banging gears, and it's nice to just be able to just smack that shifter both
13:41up and down.
13:45So I was third gear out of the hole right there. Second would have got it. It's
13:49out a little bit quicker, but again, because you have good low-end torque and
13:55then just power all the way through the rev range, you can really just kind of
14:00lug it out of a corner and then just keep the throttle wide open, and the
14:04thing just pulls nice all the way through the rev range. And another thing
14:09talking about the quick shifter is the the engines. I don't think all new, but
14:14very heavily updated. They did a lot. I think actually it's mostly new. I
14:19think he said the only thing that really has stayed the same is the piston. So
14:24have an updated transmission, very slick shifting transmission, and then you have
14:29a slipper clutch too for when you're backing it in on the rear brake to
14:35prevent that wheel hopping. So again, although this is a lightweight, sort of,
14:42we'll call it entry-level motorcycle, it has the performance and features to
14:48satisfy a beginner rider, but also an experienced experts level rider.
14:57Back it in a little bit. Such a playful bike.
15:03Wow, you could start pushing this thing a little bit harder and it just
15:07responds. It does not feel like you're overriding the bike or you're finding
15:13the limit. It just, the more you push it, not that it feels better, like you have
15:18to ride it hard to get it to work, but it just, whether you're cruising or you're
15:23trying to get after it, the bike does not care. It just, it's up to the task.
15:34A little bit of, like, bumps and stuff right there, just some G-outs and the
15:37thing stays planted. It doesn't wallow or kind of feel like it's coming unglued.
15:42And that was one of the things, one of the, why they, they redesigned the frame.
15:48They just wanted to have a little bit of a more planted feel on the side of the
15:52tire. They increased that torsional rigidity in the chassis. Another cool
15:57tech feature from the electronics package on both the Viplin and Sparklin
16:02401 is that you have Bluetooth connectivity. So you can connect your
16:06smartphone to the bike and I think you have to go through the Husk, one of the
16:10Husqvarna apps that they have for it. And yeah, you can hook up your phone and
16:15your Bluetooth communicator and they can all work together to give you turn-by-turn
16:20navigation and things like that. All right, here we go.
16:25First ride on the Sparklin 401 now.
16:32I just jumped straight into street mode with Supermoto ABS and Traction Control
16:38turned off. That's how I was riding the Viplin and I joined it. So, figure I'd just
16:44start with that on the Sparklin. But again, feels very similar to the other
16:51bike as you would expect because they're nearly identical. I will say just right
16:55off the bat, I do notice the handlebar being a little bit higher on the Sparklin.
17:00Where the other one's kind of mountain bike style. It almost just comes
17:03straight out. There's a slight upward bend but they're both really
17:08comfortable. See that shift light coming on early
17:11because it's still in the braking period. But yeah, the seat is very comfortable just
17:19like the other one. Nice and flat. The rider triangle is almost identical. Maybe
17:24you're slightly more just upright because of the handlebar being just a
17:29little bit taller. You don't have to bend over and reach as far down as
17:34the Viplin. But it's so minor. Like the Viplin is very much an upright riding
17:41position. So, just get that across that. It's nowhere near the
17:47predecessor where you're really bent over, kind of sport bike style.
17:52They're both really comfortable upright riding positions. So, we'll see how this
17:57bike handles up in the twisties as we get up there with these tires and a
18:01little bit different wheel setup. This bike's a little bit heavier too. Another
18:05thing that the Sparklin has that the Viplin does not is it has a few...
18:09They're not accessories because they come standard. But there is an
18:13accessories catalog for both bikes. But some of the things that come standard on
18:17the Sparklin is you have like this luggage rack on the tank right here. This
18:22thing you could hook a Husqvarna technical accessories bag to it. You have
18:29this little windscreen to help get some wind off of your body. Which I can't
18:33notice it doing a little bit. The Viplin, again, I mean it's a standard bike.
18:38You can't expect a whole lot of wind protection. But just a little bit less
18:42wind kind of on my lower sort of abdomen. But it's not going to take all the wind
18:46off your upper body and your head and stuff. But yeah, so a little addition
18:51there for the Sparklin over the Viplin. But yeah, so we'll see how it handles
18:56once we get it from the twisties with these. They're Pirelli Scorpion like RST
19:02tires or whatever. A tire I've spent a lot of time on on adventure bikes
19:08like the Yamaha Tender 800 and they perform really well on the pavement.
19:14It's maybe a 70-30 style tire. 70 on road, 30 in the dirt. I would say
19:22something about that. And obviously this is the scrambler. They don't recommend
19:27treating this like an adventure bike. But definitely has, you know, the tires. It's
19:32got a skid plate. So you want to go explore down a gravel road or something
19:36this bike absolutely will be capable of that. Or, you know, with the tires and the
19:42skid plate and a few of those things. But yeah, so I don't anticipate that these
19:48tires will really affect the ride quality when we get up into the canyons.
19:51And then again, on a bike, on these bikes, just me personally, I don't feel the need
19:57for traction control. I don't, especially dry conditions like this, I'm not worried
20:02about the rear end breaking loose on me with, you know, 40 or 45 horsepower is
20:08about what this thing's gonna make. So, but yeah, it's there for the riders that
20:13want it and if it was raining, you know, throw that on. Alright, a couple first
20:17quick impressions on this Svartpilen here out in the canyons. And yeah, it
20:24feels very similar to the Vitpilen. I will say that this bike on paper is a
20:30little bit heavier than the Vitpilen and you can feel that a little bit. It just
20:34doesn't want to transition from one corner to the next or onto the side of
20:38the tire quite as easily as the Vitpilen, but by no means is it, you know, heavy
20:46steering. It's just slightly noticeable. And then the tires, you can feel them a
20:51little bit when you're really banked over. There's just a little bit of more
20:54sort of feedback. You can feel the little knobbies kind of squirming a little
20:59bit, but it's it's splitting hairs. It's nothing that zaps confidence or feels
21:06like you can't really push this thing out in the canyons. It's just a very
21:09minor, both the tires and the little bit heavier steering. So, just notice that
21:15real quick, but then everything else feels exactly the same. The brakes, the
21:19suspension, and I mean they are the same, so that's what I would expect. And so
21:25yeah, it may, it kind of seems like it's really boiling down to just what kind of
21:32styling you want. Do you want to be on a scrambler? You want to be on a roadster?
21:41Run it right up to the rev limiter and grab your shift. Just make power all the
21:46way through the rev range.
21:55Big GLs is still pretty comfortable. It has enough hold up, but it's not harsh. It doesn't
22:07kind of beat you up when you hit those big bumps. It's just enough hold up, but
22:11it's still comfortable.
22:25And these tight stuff, I mean that's, this bike is really, really agile. Both of them
22:31makes it fun. And these little really tight twisty stuff for a big heavier
22:36bike, you know, might not be as easy to tip into a corner. These things, they're
22:42just fun and easy to ride, but have enough performance to keep you
22:47entertained on a whole ride and as you develop as a rider. But again, just still
22:52very approachable for the new and beginner riders.
23:01See, like in a transition like that, the Viplin just will make that transition a
23:07little bit easier than the Svartplin. But again, by no means does the Svartplin
23:12steer heavy or feel like it requires a lot of effort to get it to go from one
23:17side of the tire to the other. It's just a slight difference and I feel like
23:21that's probably just that additional 10 pounds of weight that this bike has over the Viplin.
23:35So I mentioned that both of these bikes have
23:41ABS and traction control. What I didn't mention is that it's lean sensitive,
23:46cornering sensitive, so it's a 3D IMU. And again, just a really nice feature on any
23:55motorcycle, let alone a lightweight motorcycle that comes in at less than
23:59$6,000. Pretty remarkable. Another thing to mention is the fit and finish of both
24:04of these bikes. Really nice quality, as you'd expect from the the Pure Mobility
24:10group. Their bikes are pretty premium. So just the switch cubes are new for this
24:17model or over the predecessor. I think they originally debuted this switch cube
24:21setup on the 390 Duke earlier this year, I believe. Don't quote me on that, but this
24:29is definitely new switch gear for the Svartplin and Viplin. And it's really
24:33nice, like it looks like, oh yeah, they're illuminated. So if you're riding
24:37at night or in low-light conditions, the switch cubes are illuminated, they're
24:41backlit. And they just have a really nice feel to them, like a little click. They
24:46just feel very, you know, refined and just kind of premium. And again, sticking with
24:52the theme here, not something you would expect on a entry-level, lightweight, sub
24:57$6,000 motorcycle. So again, you just get a lot of bang for your buck, both in, you
25:04know, fit and finish, performance, adjustability, and the electronics
25:09package. So, cool little tunnel. But yeah, just, I guess I was thinking about it, if
25:17I had to say one thing about the bike that could be better, would be just the
25:23clutch feel. Like the engage, when you're during the engagement point, it's a
25:28little bit vague, not a whole lot of feel. But again, that's the nature of a clutch
25:34with such a light pull. Very light. I don't know if it's an assist. I know the
25:38clutch is a slipper. I don't know if it's an assist clutch. But yeah, when you're
25:43like pulling away from a stoplight at the beginning of the day, it felt a
25:46little bit weird kind of getting the throttle and the clutch to kind of pick
25:50up together. But I totally forgot about it because it's just something I quickly
25:54adjusted to and got used to. And it was no longer an issue. But just like right
25:59when I started the day, I was like, oh, I kind of like didn't have super positive
26:03feel there. And that's honestly my only knock. And it's pretty minimal. So again,
26:10I just, I don't think that there's gonna, there's anything about this bike that a
26:15customer is not gonna be very happy with or want to fix or change quickly into
26:21their ownership of the bike. So again, if you're looking at a lightweight
26:28motorcycle that is sub $6,000 and has a lot of performance, a lot of
26:36adjustability, and a sweet electronics package, the Svartpilen 401 or the
26:43Vitpilen 401 is going to be a great option. And then when it comes down to
26:48choosing between one or the other, between these two Husqvarna models, I
26:52think it's really gonna be just styling preference and kind of what do you want
26:57to see yourself on? A more scrambler style motorcycle or more roadster style
27:01motorcycle? Because the performance is almost, you know, same same. All right. And
27:07so a final recap on the 2024 Husqvarna Svartpilen and Vitpilen 401. First and
27:14foremost, these bikes are nearly identical. It's really gonna come down to
27:19styling. Obviously the wheel setup is different and the ergos are a little
27:25different. The Svartpilen has knobby tires and spoked wheels where the
27:29Vitpilen has cast wheels and street tires. You have Pirelli Scorpion SRT or I
27:35forget what they call it. Pirelli Scorpion tires on the Svartpilen and
27:39then the Vitpilen has, I believe, Michelin Power 6 tires. So both really
27:44premium tire choices on both bikes. Again, for less than $6,000 Husqvarna just did
27:50not cut corners anywhere with these bikes it seems. And you have a really
27:55exciting updated engine now up to 399 cc's. Good down low torque or strong
28:02mid-range and just keeps making power all the way up to the red line. So you
28:06just have this really nice rev range to work with where it just makes power,
28:10usable power, the entire way through before you grab your next shift. And then
28:15you have this new chassis. They increased the torsional rigidity to, you know,
28:20improve the handling performance on the side of the tire. And this thing just
28:25feels so planted, both of them, feel so planted and confidence-inspiring when
28:29you're ripping up the back roads on the side of the tire. You have the WP Apex
28:34suspension on both bikes that's identical. The travel is identical. The
28:38damping is identical. The bikes are nearly identical as I mentioned. It's
28:42really going to be the styling, the wheel setup, and then the ergos are slightly
28:46different with the Spark Plin having a slightly taller bar rise. But other than
28:50that you're really looking at styling. So again the suspension is taut, adjustable,
28:55it just offers a lot of performance and comfort when you want to soften it up
28:59for your your morning commute or riding through the city. And then this
29:04electronics package. A 5-inch full-color TFT display with ride modes. You have two
29:09ride modes, street and rain, and then switchable traction control. You have a
29:13dedicated traction control setting for street mode, a dedicated setting for rain
29:18mode, and then you can disable traction control. And then same with the ABS. You
29:23have two levels of ABS. Just the standard on ABS. ABS is active at both wheels. And
29:30then Supermoto ABS where it disables ABS at the rear wheel and then makes it a
29:34little less intrusive at the front wheel. So you can, you know, do some skids and
29:38stuff like that. Maybe a no stoppie I was able to pull off on the Vitpilen
29:42earlier in the day. And yeah just other cool tech like Bluetooth connectivity,
29:48quick shifter comes standard, self-canceling turn signals. Just a lot of
29:53really cool good features at a price point of less than $6,000. And that's the
29:59thing with these two bikes and the KTM counterparts. The RC 390 and the Duke 390.
30:05Just they set the standard for performance and features in the
30:10lightweight category. So yeah that's going to wrap up this onboard review. I
30:16hope you enjoyed the video. Hope you learned about both of the bikes. And of
