AccuWeather's Geoff Cornish breaks down the forecast for thunderstorms across the Midwest on the evening of Oct. 24.
Transcript
00:00Just, just in the past half hour or so, past 10-15 minutes, we've had our first severe
00:05thunderstorm warning issued for the event here into Iowa, and we can show you what's
00:09going on out this way here.
00:11A couple of stronger storms also into southern parts of Minnesota, so areas along the southern
00:16part of Minnesota and northern Iowa.
00:18Mason City, you're under a severe thunderstorm warning right now, and this severe thunderstorm
00:23is making progress right through the city, Mason City, so in Cerro Gordo County of Iowa
00:28and southeastern parts of Worth County, Iowa, severe thunderstorm warning in effect until
00:325.30 central time.
00:34Look out there into Osage, Iowa.
00:36You're up next, or Osage, Missouri, I should say, Osage, Iowa.
00:42This is northern Iowa moving into southern Minnesota, where we're facing some of these
00:45stronger storms, and we can kind of illustrate this warm front feature on the map and show
00:50you the overall format, so there's a cold front to the west, and that has yet to really
00:55get activated here regarding thunderstorm potential, but along the nose of this warm
00:59front, you can see some of these thunderstorms are popping as that lifts through northeastern
01:04Iowa, approaching the Quad Cities, and within the middle of these here is the warm sector
01:10between the warm front and that advancing cold front, so that's where we're highlighting
01:15the greatest risk for severe storms, and beyond the severe thunderstorm that we talked about,
01:19we also have a relatively strong storm that's in a strengthening phase approaching Des Moines
01:23from the southwest, passing just north of Creston, and this is going to be moving through
01:28an area here right over Greenfield, Iowa, approaching Stewart and Earlham and Redfield
01:33and DeSoto, so we'll have to keep an eye out for that, and then Mankato up in Minnesota.
01:38Strong storms approaching this area.
01:39They're a little more closely tied to the New Ulm area right now, but the showers are
01:43picking up into Mankato as well, and look out there in Minneapolis.
01:46Some rain is moving in.
01:48Temperatures regained a degree in Fargo, but still only 51 degrees up behind the front
01:52on the cool side.
01:53We gained 30 degrees going from Fargo down into Kansas City, where we are pretty warm,
01:58so again, I drew that warm front and the cold front approaching, and the warm sector between
02:02the two is this area where we are concerned about severe thunderstorms, so one severe
02:07thunderstorm over northeastern parts of Iowa.
02:10South of there is the greatest risk for the next several hours.
02:13Damaging wind and hail are our main concerns.
02:15Here comes some rain.
02:17We love seeing this.
02:18We need the rain.
02:19We don't want this severe thunderstorm, winds, or large hail, but we will get some welcome
02:23rain into Chicago, Milwaukee, into Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, northern parts of Indiana,
02:28and then tomorrow it becomes a little less impressive, but at least some downpours will
02:32occur in southern Ohio, eastern Kentucky, and into parts of West Virginia, so the most
02:36reliable chance of rain here, Damien, rolls through parts of Illinois.
02:40Through the night tonight, as we get east of the Mississippi River, the severe risk
02:44drops off a bit.
02:45We're going to be cooler, but breezy behind all this.
