00:00Hello mga kapuso! Ako si Dr. Anna Tuazon ang inyong kakwintuhan na psychologist sa share ko lang.
00:14To succeed in anything, we need discipline at kitang-kita yan lalo na sa sports.
00:21So paano nga ba nabubuo ang disiplina lalo na sa mga atleta?
00:26Yan ang alamin natin mula kay NCAA Season 99 Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year,
00:35Clint Escamiz ng Mapuwa Cardinals!
00:38Hi Clint! Welcome sa share ko lang!
00:40Hello po! Good afternoon po! It's nice to be here po! Thank you!
00:45So actually, give us a glimpse of that behind the scenes.
00:48Kasi ang nakikita lang natin yung laro ne, diba?
00:51What does it take to be a basketball player or an athlete?
00:56First of all, yung number one is non-negotiable po, is yung sleep ko.
01:01Sleep ko lalo na ngayon, I've experienced so much injuries before.
01:06Dealt with ACL injuries and now I find na 8 to 9 to 10 hours of sleep is pinaka maganda for athlete.
01:15At a high level, at a high college level na yung schedule namin ngayon, medyo 3 days game kaagad, 3 days pahinga game kaagad.
01:26Then in between practice, so yun yung kailangan na talaga.
01:30And second, yung nutrition syempre. Yung mga protein kasi when you play basketball, sobrang grabe yung na-lose mo na, na-burn mo na calories.
01:38And of course that is your muscle calories so kailangan mapantayin yun.
01:43And with the right nutrition and the right guidance from my coaches, nagagawa namin.
01:488 to 10 hours of sleep?
01:50Yes.
01:51Dito muna tayo mag-focus.
01:53Kasi even non-athletes, mga regular students, regular people, parang di nila ma-imagine 8 to 10 hours.
02:01Kasi most people, honestly, nasa 5, 6 hours, lalo na akong stress.
02:05So, paano mo siya nagawa? I'm sure hindi madali.
02:10Yes talaga, syempre. That goes with time management talaga.
02:14Syempre kasama natin yung studies.
02:16Para sa akin, nag-start yung morning, 6am.
02:19Minsan, nag-shooting na kami. If mahaba yung pahingat throughout games,
02:24andun na kami, nasa court na kami, nag-shooting na kami nung rookie ko.
02:28Kasi kuya na ako.
02:29So, after nun, mag-nap.
02:31Then sunod, viewing. Viewing kami sa mga previous games sa amin and scouting teams.
02:37Then, yun. Actual team practice natin.
02:40After nun, yung weights namin. Weights training. Importante talaga yun.
02:44So, what time do you go to sleep? Kasi medyo namamind-blown pa rin ako
02:48sa idea ng 8 to 10 hours na student ka na.
02:51Diba? Hindi ka lang kasi athlete eh.
02:53So, studying. Last time when we were communicating, may exam ka pa.
02:58Oo, yun. May exam ka pa.
03:00So, you still have to do all these things. Yun pal, diba?
03:04So, anong oras? Kasi, in a person of your age, college student, diba?
03:09Nightlife is the fun part. So, are you missing out, Clint?
03:14For me, nung high school ako, yun. Medyo nag-enjoy pa ako nung time ko.
03:19Yung mga nightlife, mga ganun.
03:21Siyempre, lahat naman tayo pinagdadaanan yung mga ganun eh.
03:23Pero, eventually, when season starts, you need to lock in talaga yung mga nightlife talaga.
03:29Kailangan talaga sacrifice para sa mga journey niyo para patungo sa championship.
03:34So, daily, siguro natutulog ako mga 9 to 10. 9 to 10, yes. 9 to 10 p.m.
03:41Kahit anong yaya, anong party, wala talaga.
03:46Siyempre may mga ganyan talaga eh. Pero, nope.
03:48It's NCAA season na need to lock in talaga.
03:52Every single detail counts talaga.
03:56I like how you said it. I need to be locked in.
03:58Parang locked in na siya, hindi mo na siya iisipin.
04:01Kasi kanina, you're mentioning sleep, nutrition.
04:03Kasi siyempre, avoiding injuries and recovering from that.
04:07Kasi you mentioned ACL, maraming hindi na nakaka-recover.
04:11Yes.
04:12With that.
04:13So, that's the physical stuff.
04:15Pero, locking in, parang may mental aspect ng discipline and that's the hardest.
04:20Diba?
04:21How do you really...
04:23Ano yung mental discipline para sa'yo?
04:26Kasi mga distractions.
04:28Diba? Yung parang, uy, teka, bata pa ako.
04:31Gusto ko pa mag-date. Gusto ko pa mag-enjoy.
04:34How do you get yourself mentally locked in?
04:38Siyempre, yung mindset ko talaga eh.
04:41Sa pre-season, medyo okay pa eh.
04:43I can relax. I can do this, do that.
04:46But when season times comes, yun yung non-negotiable ko kasi.
04:50Yun yung top priority ko right now.
04:52Even my girlfriend, alam niya yan.
04:54May mga sacrifices talaga na kailangan eh.
04:56So, yun talaga.
04:58There will be ano naman, off days.
05:00Hindi naman, hindi naman barkit ano.
05:02Porke season ka, ano ka, everyday, everyday.
05:06You need to recover then.
05:07Yung day number one, ano.
05:08Yung kailangan ng body namin.
05:10Kasi hard season, recovery is part of that.
05:13And there's days na you can relax and just take the day off from basketball.
05:18But after that day off, you need to go back to work again.
05:21Now, balik tayo.
05:22Kasi na-curious ako eh.
05:23Kasi parang for some people, yung sense of discipline.
05:26Parang ano ba yan? Natural.
05:28Pero what really separates, diba?
05:31The premium athletes is their mentality.
05:35Oo.
05:36Oo.
05:37So, I'm curious ako Clint.
05:38Nung high school ka ba?
05:40Talagang disciplinado ka na ba?
05:42Kasi okuhira pa, teenager.
05:44And discipline.
05:45I feel like the turning point of yung discipline ko is like
05:49nung na ACL injury ako.
05:51Yung talaga.
05:52The most part of that before nag-ACL injury,
05:55I wasn't into...
05:57I was into working out.
05:58But may tawag, poggy weights.
06:00Yun yung tawag.
06:01Sa sports technical na ngayon, na sports science,
06:04na more on focus sa mga performance mo,
06:06sa mga iwas, injuries.
06:08So, after nung na-injury ako,
06:10I think it was a blessing in disguise for me.
06:12Kasi, yun.
06:13I got into more into nutrition,
06:15into more on the sports science of basketball.
06:19And into yun, sa mga workouts ko.
06:21Iba eh. Iba talaga eh.
06:22More on scientific eh.
06:24So, yun yung...
06:25I think you need to have that in part of your life.
06:27Parang realization.
06:29Para makapatutunan ka.
06:31Like, lesson.
06:32So, yun yung para sa akin.
06:34Nung na-injury ako,
06:35dun ako masalong I need to go back harder, stronger,
06:39and twice as who I was.
06:42So, when your ACL injury happened,
06:45Yes.
06:46Naalala mo ba?
06:47What went through your mind?
06:49Actually, I was playing for Makuwa in high school.
06:53Tapos, nung nangyari yun,
06:54dun na, dun na,
06:55pang sinabi sa akin ng doktor na
06:58torn ACL to,
07:00you need to have reconstruction surgery.
07:03Tapos, yung mom ko,
07:04umiyak talaga yung mom ko eh.
07:06That really hurt me.
07:07But ako, like,
07:08okay, andito na to. Andito na tayo.
07:10Like, there's not a day.
07:12Like, there will be days na magpumuka,
07:14pero at the end of the day,
07:15kailangan mo talaga mag, ano,
07:17push through sa mga, ano,
07:19yun. Kasi dream mo to eh. Dream mo eh.
07:21Kahit high school ko pa lang na-injury ka,
07:23then you need to go back to, ano,
07:26twice as stronger at who I was.
07:28And, yun nga, nagawutin nga.
07:30Thank God na nagkauha ko yun.
07:31And God put me through that.
07:34And naka, ano, naka-pass naman ako.
07:37So, walang naging doubt or question sa mind mo na,
07:40babalik ako? Magre-recover ako?
07:43Um, there will be days na parang
07:45tagal naman eh. Ito, ang tagal.
07:47Like, there will be days talaga na malulungkot.
07:49Kasama yun sa, ano, sa injury aspect.
07:52Di lang sa physical, sa mental din.
07:54A lot of people don't know that,
07:57na akala lang nila masakit sa physical.
08:00Pero at the end of the day,
08:01there's, ano, there's mental aspect din.
08:04And kailangan din yung i-train,
08:06i-train na i-train.
08:07Like, watch, uh, for me,
08:09watch Kobe videos.
08:10Kobe inspirational videos.
08:12It helps, it helps.
08:13So, yun yung what I watch, uh,
08:17inspirational videos na,
08:19I can do this, I can do that.
08:20So, yun talaga yung, ano,
08:22at the end of the day, you need to,
08:23ano, understand yun.
08:25Parang do mo na-relax.
08:26Teka, I need to take this seriously.
08:28Hindi ito parang laru-laru lang.
08:30Parang lahat ng ginagawa mo
08:32can either help you become healthy,
08:35maka-recover sa injury,
08:36or actually kung hindi ka mindful, di ba?
08:38You can cause more injuries.
08:40Kung hindi mo talaga alagaan
08:42ang sarili mo.
08:43And so, at what point do you realize,
08:46uy, nagpe-pay off tong discipline?
08:48Yung realization point ko na
08:50how work was paying off is like,
08:52yun, yung last season na,
08:53yun talaga yung season na parang,
08:55nag-ano, nag-blow up ako eh.
08:57Yung talaga yung naramdaman ko yung,
08:59ah, ito na talaga, ito na yung,
09:01kahit napapasabi ko sa coach ko na,
09:03coach, thank you talaga,
09:05ito na yung mga,
09:07pinagkirapan natin yung, what,
09:09two, three years ago.
09:11And it wasn't, alam,
09:12it wasn't a smooth sail for me.
09:15Back when I was Uy,
09:17may times din, after the pandemic,
09:20I was underperforming.
09:21So, yun, and I still trusted my work.
09:25And then, nung lumipat ako sumapuha,
09:28it paid off.
09:30I mean, kasi yun din yun eh, di ba?
09:32Kaya, but if, kung madali ang discipline,
09:35we would all do it, di ba?
09:38Oo, kaya nga discipline siya.
09:40Kasi actually, yung payoff hindi immediate.
09:42Hindi parang nag-exercise ka,
09:44mananalo ka na sa games.
09:48So, in a way, it requires patience nga.
09:51Parang in keeping and trusting in the process na,
09:54at some point, magbibay off to.
09:56I have this quote na, favorite quote na talaga,
09:59no hard work goes unnoticed.
10:02Kahit wala ka man opportunity,
10:06like, natalo ka man or opportunity mo nawala,
10:10eventually, if you keep working hard,
10:12and when that opportunity arises,
10:15you'll be ready and you'll go get it.
10:17Yung talaga yung mentality ko eh,
10:19throughout my career.
10:21Even though, yung matalo ka man,
10:22like last year, masakit, di ba?
10:24One game away from championship.
10:26So close.
10:27Yeah, so close.
10:28Sobrang ano lang talaga ako.
10:30Siyempre, masad ka,
10:31but at the end of the day,
10:33we need to make that frustration into motivation,
10:37and that's what drove me to this year.
10:39So, parang sa umpis, definitely,
10:41developing that sense of discipline.
10:45Mahirap, kasi nga, wala pang payoff.
10:47Minsan, parang feeling mo,
10:49opposite outcome pa yung nangyayari.
10:51Di ba? Parang nagtatrabaho ka,
10:53pero hindi lumalabas.
10:55And then eventually, once it becomes habit na,
10:58parang hindi na kano kahirap,
10:59naturally, gumigising ka na na.
11:01Maaga, hindi ka na nasasayangan
11:03sa early bedtime call mo.
11:06Then it gets easier,
11:08and then once the payoff comes in,
11:10di ba? Parang,
11:11why would you ever do something else?
11:14Oo, yun. Yun talaga.
11:16So yun, yung nakatikim na ako last year na,
11:18based from my experience,
11:20Rookie MVP from Series 14 season,
11:23Rookie MVP, and that says a lot.
11:26Di lang naman, basta-basta,
11:28it doesn't come out of thin air.
11:30It comes from hard work and perseverance talaga.
11:32So, I got a taste of that,
11:34and I want a taste of something more.
11:36And that taste of something more is championship.
11:39And I won this season.
11:41Rookie of the year,
11:42and then this season,
11:44Kuya Clint ka na kaagad.
11:46Rookie to kuya to leader.
11:48Kamusta naman ang progress?
11:51Kamusta ang shift to being kuya?
11:54Siyempre, malaking bagay yun para sa akin kasi
11:58madami din ako natutulan sa mga seniors ko
12:01from last season.
12:02Sila Warren Bonifacio,
12:03sila Paolo Hernandez.
12:04So, madami silang binigay sa akin ng mga lessons na
12:07mga pang-kuya level lang kumbaga kasi
12:10alam naman nila na aasaan ako this season
12:14para sa mga incoming rookies.
12:16So, yun.
12:17Medyo may ano din, may kahihirapan din at una,
12:20pero naka-adjust naman ako over time.
12:22So, ngayon, leader ka na.
12:24Kaya sabi, kuya Clint na ngayon.
12:26Kuya ka na.
12:27And so, does it require a different kind of discipline
12:32this time?
12:33Kasi siguro dati, sarili mo lang.
12:35Ang pake mo and then you just want to contribute
12:38to the team.
12:39Parang ganon.
12:40You just want to prove yourself to the team.
12:42Now, you have to think of the team.
12:45Ikaw na talaga yun.
12:46So, what kind of discipline now do you have to do?
12:51First of all, being a good example to them.
12:55Kasi syempre, if you're a leader, susunodin ka nila.
12:58So, yun.
12:59Yung discipline talaga yun ngayon.
13:01For me ngayon, at first you need to be there on a call time.
13:06Para sa akin, mga 1 or 2 hours before hand ko nga na eh
13:09sa call time na nag-shooting ka na.
13:11Papangit ka mo talaga sa kanila na,
13:13oh, UP MVP to, leader to.
13:16But he's still working 2 hours before our practice.
13:37So, yun.
13:38Gusto ko being a good example, being a good kuya,
13:41on and off the court, yun.
13:43And being there for them.
13:45Yung dati, ako lang yung naalala ko.
13:50Ngayon, sila naman yung parang kinakamusta ko sila.
13:53If I see someone na medyo off din na parang hindi nagsasinta,
13:57nakamusta ko.
13:58Kamusta ka naman, kamusta ka naman.
14:00Yung mga, ano yun.
14:03Gusto ko paging a good kuya and a good leader.
14:06So, yun yung pini-implicate this season.
14:08So, in a way, parang mas mahirap yun.
14:12Hindi ba?
14:13You have to be more disciplined now than ever.
14:17Kasi parang kung dati, parang,
14:19pwede rin, let's say, malate ka.
14:21Actually, minsan din, minsan, may nangyayaki nun na malate talaga ako.
14:26Dahil sa mga workouts ko, gano'n.
14:28But now, I need to be there with the team talaga.
14:31So, yun.
14:33Ano, non-negotiable.
14:34Napawalan malate.
14:35Kasi pag malate ako, ah, pwede pala malate.
14:37See, Captain Cliff nga, nalalate.
14:39So, yun, kagayahin ka.
14:41That's, that all spiraled from there.
14:44Parang kung dati, parang, ah, you just failed your standard.
14:47Ngayon, parang, ah, I just set a lower standard for others.
14:51Parang, so instead na, parang, uy, leader ka na.
14:54Sabi mo nga, rookie MVP.
14:56So, instead of, parang, makakarelax ka.
14:59Di ba? Maging complacent.
15:01Mas lalong, I need, pwede ka pakita.
15:03I need to show up.
15:04Sabi mo nga.
15:06Siyempre para sa'n, blessing in disguise yun.
15:08Para hindi makontento sa nakuha ko from last year.
15:12And may mga ibang teammates din naman ako na nakasama ko from last year.
15:17Maasaan ko naman.
15:19Kasi, you know, being a team captain is a big role talaga for me.
15:23And especially being the best player para sa liga like MVP and rookie every year.
15:30Malaking, ano, mahirap din yun na maging best ka sa this one.
15:35And best at being a leader.
15:37Mahirap talaga.
15:38And for me, aminin ko na, ano talaga, nahihirapan ako ng una.
15:42And my teammates got me through it.
15:44Yung mga nakakatanda, nakakatanda din.
15:47Yan yung mga inaasaan ko na hindi lang ako yung magiging leader.
15:50But for them, nagiging vocal din sila.
15:53Nagiging kuya din sila sa mga younger players on the team.
15:56So, parang kanina din, it also requires support, di ba?
16:00To be a good leader.
16:02And to realize, hindi lang sakin, di ba, hindi lang ikaw.
16:06It's not just you.
16:08You need to draw strength and resources from many places and many people.
16:15So, there's something I'm curious about, Clint.
16:18Kasi nga, you're a student-athlete, di ba?
16:21Yun na nga, butisano if all you, di ba?
16:23Imagine if, are you looking forward to that moment where you can just play basketball
16:27and not have to think of anything else?
16:29Oo naman, pero at the same time, may group talaga ako na, syempre.
16:32Gusto kong mag-graduate eh.
16:34I want to make my parents proud na andun ako sa PACC.
16:39May diploma, syempre, kasama din yun.
16:42Part of my goal.
16:43Ay, syempre, gusto ko din rin mag-play na overseas and play pro,
16:48but yun, syempre, gusto ko din yung isang team na mag-graduate.
16:52So, something I'm curious about, Clint, is
16:54saan mas mahirap maging discipline?
16:57Sa pagiging athlete, playing basketball, or sa pagiging student?
17:02Oo, syempre, para sa akin, pagiging student.
17:05Not gonna lie, pagiging student.
17:06Kasi, syempre, basketball is your passion.
17:10You're there, you're given free tuition na pag-aarad dahil sa basketball.
17:15Syempre, yun din.
17:17Syempre, 50-50.
17:18Pero, yun, kailangan din mag-aaral eh.
17:21Di lang buko bola, kailangan din mag-aaral.
17:25And, yun, I think I'm doing a good job at it.
17:28Kahit sa season, medyo, medyo.
17:31Syempre, taxing yung schedule namin.
17:34But may mga iba naman na tumutulong.
17:36Good po pasok yung support.
17:38So, speaking of that, parang in terms of support,
17:41anong nakatulong sa'yo?
17:43Kasi nga, on times of doubt, yung uncertainty.
17:45Parang, yes, I'm working hard.
17:46Eto na, nandito na yung motto mo.
17:48No hard work goes.
17:49Diba? Unnoticed.
17:51Diba?
17:52I'm sure, yun na nga, hindi ka lang mag-isa.
17:55Diba? Kasi, if you're alone, parang,
17:57it's so easy to quit.
17:58Diba? It's so easy to give up.
18:00So, what kind of support did you get?
18:03And what kind of support do people need
18:04para talaga mag-porsigue?
18:06Syempre, yun yung behind the scenes na
18:08one of my pillars in life is my family.
18:11May family talaga, what got me through that
18:13that injury and that season.
18:16Syempre, yung number one supporter ko,
18:18yung mom ko, and yung mga talagang kuya,
18:20kuya Bill and kuya Mark.
18:21They've been so, how do you say it?
18:24Hard love on me.
18:25Like, sige, okay lang yan.
18:27Mga ginawa mong mali.
18:29Kasi, syempre, ako naglalaro ako.
18:31I'm just in the moment.
18:32Pero sila, nakapanood din lang ako.
18:34Nakikita lang yung mga mali ko.
18:36So, after the game, I seek their advice
18:39kung anuman nagawa kong mali,
18:41kung anuman kulang ko.
18:42And they've been so generous of me na, yun,
18:44i-correct ako.
18:45Na walang halong, how do you say it?
18:49Parang walang pooping, kumbaga.
18:52Parang minsan, di ba?
18:54Di ba?
18:55Hindi madali makatanggap ng criticism.
18:58Lalo na kung, in a way, parang feeling mo,
19:00Uy, ang dami ko na na-achieve.
19:02Parang, Uy, Rookie of the Year na ako.
19:04Bakit meron pa rin ako?
19:05Tama naman.
19:07Pointers!
19:09So, what helps you take in that feedback
19:12and really use it?
19:13Syempre, may isa pa din ako nung sinasabi sa akin
19:16ng coach ko na,
19:17you're only good as your last game.
19:20Doesn't mean how much you, in the past,
19:23achievement mo, like, took your MVP.
19:25But you played a bad game.
19:27You lost to San Beta.
19:29And that's it sa lahat na, like, di ba?
19:32Kailangan talaga, there's always room to improve every day.
19:35And syempre, kung mga nakikita mo sa social media,
19:38minsan yung mga ibang tao, syempre,
19:39tumitaw na parang nakakalungkot.
19:41But at the end of the day, you need to go back.
19:44You need to never back down.
19:46Kailangan mo talaga mag-improve
19:48and use that as motivation para sa akin.
19:51Is there anything you can share sa mga fans
19:55or sa mga nakikinig ngayon
19:57in terms of, yeah, parang, kunyari,
20:00hirapan na sila.
20:01Kunyari, Clint, ayoko na! Ayoko na!
20:03Masyado namang disciplined yan.
20:05What could you tell them
20:06when parang feeling na nila,
20:08hindi ko na kaya?
20:09Mahirap masyado ang discipline.
20:11For me, sabihin ko lang sa kanila,
20:13just take it day by day talaga.
20:15There's nowhere to wait that out.
20:18Pero, think of it na sa...
20:20Andito ka na sa moment na pinag-pray mo,
20:24what, 3, 4, 5 years away.
20:26Why would you stop?
20:28And you need to persevere until you reach that goal.
20:31Kung ano man yung dream mo,
20:33you're almost there naman.
20:34Hinatling talaga.
20:36You're a long way from where you came.
20:38My God, when you think back.
20:40When you think back to your high school
20:42playing days.
20:43Grabe nga eh.
20:45Kinangarap ko lang ito eh.
20:47Actually, kinangarap ko lang talaga
20:49maglago sa college eh.
20:51And then hopefully,
20:53pagpala eh, mapunta sa prosing.
20:55So, yun.
20:57Hindi ko din kinakalimutan na
20:59andito ko kung saan ako ngayon.
21:01Nung pinag-pray ko nung high school ako,
21:03nung bata ako na sana makita ko sa TV
21:06ng mom and dad.
21:08Ayan yun ah.
21:10That keeps me humble.
21:13At the same time,
21:15I came a long way from
21:17that kid na naglalaro sa playground.
21:19Mint, Escamiz.
21:21Rookie MVP.
21:23How many people, you know, enjoy it?
21:25Savor, you know, savor this time.
21:28And kasi,
21:30make sure ah, you have time to enjoy.
21:32Kasi alam ko, sometimes disciplined life
21:34sounds so boring for others.
21:36Parang hindi naman masaya.
21:38Oo naman, syempre.
21:40There might be times na, syempre,
21:42discipline, but the same time,
21:44you're just a person.
21:45You're just a normal person.
21:47At the end of the scene,
21:48kailangan mo talaga i-appreciate
21:50kung paano meron ka,
21:51kung sino yung nasa paligid mo,
21:53yung mga loved ones mo.
21:54At syempre, kung ano,
21:56kung paano binigay siya yun ni Lord.
21:57Talaga, just be thankful.
21:59Thank you, Clint Escamiz of Mapua Cardinals.
