00:00A sadistic game of cat and mouse plays out in the desert in horror-thriller Bloodstar,
00:06directed by Laurence Giacomelli.
00:08Brittany Comancho is driving through New Mexico when she's terrorised by Sheriff John Schwab,
00:13who targets, toys with and then hunts women for his own sick amusement.
00:19Shot in just ten days, Bloodstar looks pretty slick all things considered and it's largely
00:24carried by the performances of Comancho and especially the creepy Schwab.
00:28Bloodstar works best as a commentary on misogynistic violence, not just with the Sheriff, whose
00:33gun and badge is allowing him to get away with murder, but also that Comancho is driving
00:37towards an abusive boyfriend who she keeps excusing, and we know he's an a-hole because
00:42his name is Rhett.
00:43As a thriller though, I found its attempts to build tension to be stop-start, especially
00:48around the middle, but towards the end it starts getting properly nasty.
00:52There are shades of wolf-creep to this that I found a little bit unpleasant, and that's
00:56not helped by some contrived plotting in my opinion.
