This week I have been out digging for dinner and checking to see if the Brussels sprouts and radishes and shop bought potatoes planted earlier in the year had proved a success.
Transcript
00:00So in today's video, I'm just going to go around and collect, well see if the wheat
00:18experiment we did earlier in the year with potatoes worked.
00:21We had a few shop bought potatoes and I'm just going to bring them out of the grow bag
00:27and see if any came off the ones that were going bad at the time.
00:33And we're also going to look at the radishes which were planted about four or five weeks
00:38ago and they were radishes from 2010-2012 around then and the seeds took off no problem.
00:47And the other thing we're going to be harvesting today is Brussels sprouts and looking at some
00:53herbs to see if we get any potatoes so I'm being optimistic, I've got a big bowl here.
01:00I'll just go up first and collect the sprouts.
01:08You can see here the raised bed and if I bring you in closer you can see the sprouts are
01:15at various stages here so this one here I'm going to cut today, they're quite small sprouts,
01:22you get sprouts that are massive, big plants, but they're quite small and I have some more
01:28over here growing.
01:29You can see here these look actually healthier, the ones in the ground, you can see them now.
01:37They're still quite small so I'll probably harvest them through into December maybe,
01:45might even get some Christmas ones out of them.
01:49So first things first, I'm just going to chop them, leave the roots in the ground so it's not date.
02:00And there we go, there you have it.
02:05You can see all the wee sprouts on that now, I'll just pick them off, some of them are
02:13going bad at the bottom here but I'll just pick the bottom leaves off and then cook them
02:17as well.
02:18So that's the first thing we've done today and just beside those are the radishes, got
02:27some Sweet Alison there flowering away from the spring.
02:34These radishes I'm going to leave because this was only some of the packet, I'll pull
02:39one out just to see, yep there we go, a fully formed radish, so you can use these as you're
02:48grating salads or sandwiches, you can cook them as well.
02:52Let's just put some of the soil back in, there we go that's one radish and I think there's
03:00a variety of radishes in here.
03:03So we'll leave the rest there, it's a bit smaller.
03:11That's our first two things and then we have here marjoram which is going over now, so
03:19I'm just going to take some of that.
03:22Still some flowers happening here in the garden too, it's almost November but the cosmos is
03:28flowering away and some sweet pea and hollyhock up the back there and the gladiola which I'm
03:36going to have to move back because they've been battered by the wind.
03:40And just while I'm here I'll just show you, I've been planting loads of wee small plants
03:46all grown from seed in the bed which I hope will survive over the winter and then spring
03:52up in the spring and we'll have some early plants come up.
03:56Here these radishes in the grow bag are larger and you can see here is a white radish.
04:11This was a mixed variety of radishes, so there we go, that'll be these and you can eat the
04:16leaves of these as well, let's see if there's any other types in there.
04:22That one looks pretty, oh that's this one, that's tiny, that's a white one that hasn't
04:32really grown yet but the leaves are everywhere on it.
04:39And there's another little round red one, pinkish red, very nice and I'll leave the
04:53rest of them in there for another while and then finally we come over to potatoes.
05:01Now if you've watched the video where I just planted these, just move over the camera here,
05:10in a grow bag and I've basically forgot about them ever since, just left them in there now,
05:23kind of dying back the plants themselves which is usually a good indicator that it's time
05:29to have a look and see what's been happening with them.
05:32There we go, we'll have a look now.
05:37So here it goes, just have a look here, oh and just straight away, I don't know if you
05:44can see that, I'll bring you in here, you can see a potato on the top here, yep, sitting
05:52by itself, so we know we've had some success then.
05:57So if I just, oh my god, look how many, these are all tiny wee potatoes but look how many
06:11there are, jeekers.
06:12Now this was from four potatoes that were, four or five was it, that were, god some of
06:21them are still really growing as well.
06:27Oh god, maybe I shouldn't have touched them so early.
06:35Wow, there's an awful lot of them here.
06:38I'll just pull up another one now, maybe it's just the lemons in there, I'll have a look.
06:47Yep, they're all growing, and these are on marsh paper, I can't believe that, that's
06:53mad, but these weren't seed potatoes or anything, these were just potatoes that I bought in
07:00the shop and were going bad, so I threw them in a bag of compost and left them outside.
07:12Maybe I should try and pull up one more.
07:17Ah, put them back in, there's another wee one.
07:25No big, big spuds, which means that they aren't ready yet probably, but a good few, like new
07:38baby potatoes or something like that.
07:41That one's a good size as well.
07:44So there we have it.
07:47And just up behind here, I'm going to take a wee sprig of the rosemary that I've been
07:59growing from seed, just take out the rose, and then I'll use that to cook these wee spuds
08:06with, maybe bake them, make roasties with them, and throw in the rosemary.
08:13So there we go, that should be done and shorted for today.
08:25I'll just sit that here for a bit.
08:29Just thought I'd show you here while we're at it, while we're collecting some food, that
08:35tomato plants are still going indoors, and it's November in a few days, and it's just
08:42been quite a mild, there hasn't been a frost yet, like which hasn't killed as many things
08:46back as you'd expect, but there's still a lot of lush green growth, still some tomatoes
08:53coming.
08:55Let's see, a few more here, and it's still flowering away, which is really baffling,
09:04the ones all outside died back, but not these guys, so I might just leave them for another
09:09few weeks, and let them die back naturally.
