00:00Well, we've been waiting a long time for the Yankees and the Dodgers to return to the World
00:09Series stage.
00:10They did, and they delivered a Game 1 classic.
00:11And so what does Game 2 have in store?
00:12This clash of baseball titans.
00:13It's proving to be worth the wait so far.
00:14The Dodgers over the Yankees in extra innings in Game 1, and we're all set for Game 2 at
00:15Dodger Stadium.
00:16For the Dodgers, the 26-year-old rookie from Japan, Yoshi Yamamoto.
00:31Yamamoto pitched well in the Bronx back in June with seven scoreless innings, and the
00:35Dodgers have won all three of his postseason starts, but have also been cautious with his
00:40pitch count.
00:41Nine to days, eight days rest.
00:43We'll see what that's like early on in a World Series game.
00:46On his payoff, takes a high fastball and a leadoff walk for Torres.
00:50Says he's done so many times, he's on to open the first inning.
00:54And here comes Juan Soto.
00:55Soto.
00:56Grounds one, left side.
00:57Rojas waits on it.
00:58Over to first in time, and to second goes Torres.
00:59So there's a runner at second with one man out, and here is Aaron Judge.
01:06He gets going.
01:07He could win the series for the X.
01:09This will be the 20th pitch of the first inning for Yamamoto.
01:13Strikes out swinging.
01:14Gone with a slider that dropped off below the zone.
01:18That's out number two in the first.
01:20Judge strikes out.
01:21Stanton comes out.
01:22Yankees a first inning chance.
01:23Stanton with a pop up, and another missed opportunity for New York.
01:24Different day, same story for the Yankees.
01:31For the Yankees, Carlos Rodon makes his fourth postseason start and his first ever start
01:36in the Fall Classic.
01:37We saw Rodon be excellent in game one of the ALCS with six innings of one run ball and
01:42nine strikeouts.
01:44He allowed two runs in four and two thirds innings in a series-clinching game five last
01:48Saturday in Cleveland.
01:49Rodon's 1-0 to Ohtani is lifted to right center field, and he begins this game the
01:54same way that he started yesterday with a high fly out of center field.
01:57Bickley fly ball.
01:58The judge makes the grab up.
02:00It takes us to Mookie Betts.
02:01It was last night, but did have a game-time sacrifice fly.
02:052-2 to Betts.
02:06Pokes a base hit the other way.
02:07Goes out and gets that seldom used change up, and serves a single into right field.
02:08First down.
02:10First down to the world series for Mookie Betts.
02:13Oscar Hernandez at the plate.
02:17One for four last night with a hard hit single up the middle.
02:20Hernandez.
02:21Flies one to right field.
02:23Soto with an easy play this time.
02:27Two gone in the first and here comes the hero, Freddie Freeman.
02:34Swung on and.
02:35Popped up.
02:36Right around home plate.
02:37Rizzo down from first.
02:39and makes a catch.
02:40No, no runs, one hit, one left.
02:43End of one, no score.
02:45Tommy Edmonds starts this inning two for four last night
02:47with a double and a run score.
02:49Hits the seventh straight, multiple hits the last four.
02:52What has clicked for you as far as just that power surge
02:55that you have going on right now?
02:57I think it's just having a better swing,
02:59you know, being on path for longer.
03:01Obviously I'm not the kind of guy
03:02who's trying to hit a bunch of fly balls,
03:03but for me that means more line drives,
03:06and then the line drives can accidentally turn into homers,
03:09you know what I mean?
03:10So I'm definitely not trying to hit homers,
03:11but I'm just trying to have a good angle off the bat
03:13where you can get it basically in front of the outfielders.
03:17On Rodon's 2-0, Edmonds swings,
03:19hits a high fly ball, left field,
03:21carrying toward the corner, Verdugo on the run,
03:23he's at the wall, it's good!
03:26Tommy tanks, welcome to the World Series.
03:30Second home run of the postseason,
03:32and it breaks the ice in game two.
03:35One-nothing LA.
03:36He hits like Babe Ruth against lefties.
03:40He sure does, and the 2-0 count,
03:42it's much easier to hit when you're ahead of the count.
03:44The average is through the roof,
03:46and he took advantage of a 2-0 fastball
03:48and deposited left field.
03:50So, grounded out his first time, bases empty two away.
03:53You're pretty incredible what this guy's done already.
03:55Won a World Series when he was 20 back in 2019
03:58with the Washington Nationals, starred in that series,
04:01took Garrett Cole deep twice,
04:02took Justin Verlander deep in that fall classic.
04:05He pulls one in the air to deep right field.
04:07Butts watches this one go, and Juan Soto's tied the game.
04:12Oh, there's a Soto photo.
04:15He hits a high drive to deep right.
04:18Mookie went back, gave up,
04:20and the ball landed in deep right field
04:22for the tying home run.
04:24He's wonderful, marvelous.
04:28Juan Soto ties the game with a long home run.
04:31Well, the Yankees unable to come up with a key hit.
04:34Just blasted over the wall to get the offense.
04:36Mookie Betzel bat, two out, nobody on.
04:39Funny enough, the Dodgers only have two hits against Rodon.
04:41Mookie has one of them.
04:42Swing and a line drive, base hit into left field.
04:45Hooks over the head of Jazz Chisholm at third,
04:47so Mookie is two for two in game two.
04:50Teoscar Hernandez 0 for one.
04:52He flew out to right field in the first inning.
04:54On this 1-0 pitch, Teo tees off, high drive,
04:58right center field, carrying back toward the wall,
05:01and now it's out of here.
05:04Teoscar Hernandez pumps his best
05:07and pounds his chest as he rounds first base.
05:10The Dodgers are back in front.
05:12A two-run tank from Teo, and it's 3-1 L.A.
05:17The home run derby has broken out here
05:19in game two of the World Series,
05:21and the home run derby champion from this summer
05:23has his first in the fall class.
05:25It would have been 41 days since Freddie Freeman
05:27last homered before he stepped to the plate
05:28in the 10th yesterday, hit that grand slam.
05:31Launches this ball right field.
05:33He's found the seats again.
05:37The Dodgers are teeing off on Carlos Ronan in game two.
05:42Third home run of the night, and now a 4-1 lead.
05:4641 days without a home run, and then two of them
05:49in a 24-hour span in the World Series.
05:53A two-hour burst for the Dodgers,
05:55Betts singles, Hernandez homers.
05:57Freeman follows him with a home run of his own,
05:59and the Dodgers lead 4-1.
06:01Here's another one of the home run hitters in Tommy Edmond.
06:04Edmond strokes one to the gap in left-center field.
06:07That's headed for the wall.
06:08Edmond's got a home run and a double,
06:10and the Dodgers' bats heating up.
06:13Again, getting three outs hard against this club.
06:17This 1-1 pitch is dangerous,
06:19and I think you've got to be off-speed-minded
06:21if you're Rodan.
06:24He throws this ball in a line to left field,
06:26but it is hauled in by Verdugo.
06:28Got away with one.
06:29He did get away with it.
06:30But didn't get away with a couple before that.
06:33New pitcher for the Yankees is Jake Cousins.
06:35On to face Will Smith.
06:36Cousins' payoff.
06:37Smith lines the ball to deep-center field.
06:40Judge running back.
06:41He turns and watches this ball hit off the wall.
06:44Smith headed to second with a double.
06:47Throw gets all the way to the plate.
06:49Smith hangs on at second.
06:51Will Smith has his first base hit of this World Series.
06:55Rojas swings in, hits it on the ground to second.
06:58Torres shuffles over and makes the throw to Rizzo
07:00for the second out of the inning.
07:02Smith advances to third on the play.
07:04Righty lefty here.
07:05Cousins against Ohtani.
07:06Betts waits on death.
07:07If they're not going to put him on intentionally,
07:09you've got to figure he's going to be
07:10really careful right here.
07:11Bounces this one up the middle.
07:13Cousins made a good pitch,
07:14and he gets Ohtani to finish off the fourth.
07:16Yamamoto coming off back-to-back.
07:18One, two, three innings.
07:20Ten pitches in each of the fourth and fifth frames.
07:24Trying to keep it rolling against Glaber Torres.
07:26Glaber Torres grabs the first pitch to third,
07:29and Max Bencio throw over to get him.
07:31One pitch, one out for Yamamoto here in the sixth.
07:33And Soto for the third time.
07:35He's one for two with a long home run
07:37in the right-field bullpen.
07:38Soto swings and bounces it to second.
07:40Kike after the second hop, has it in the glove.
07:43Gets it into his right throwing hand.
07:44Gets it over to Freddie Freeman, two away.
07:46What felt like a huge inning for the Yankees, John.
07:49Two up and two down just like that.
07:51Yeah, this was a must-score inning for the Yankees.
07:53Got him swinging.
07:55Yoshinobu Yamamoto is on a roll in game two.
07:59He has retired the last ten Yankees he has faced
08:03since allowing the home run to Juan Soto,
08:05and he just got Aaron Judge to strike out
08:08for the second time tonight.
08:10Six strong in the books for Yamamoto.
08:12And John Carlos Stanton leads off.
08:14Yamamoto stays in.
08:15He had not pitched into the sixth inning
08:17since he last faced the Yankees on June 7th.
08:20Now, here he is into the seventh.
08:21This is probably going to be just the one hitter
08:23with the run of left-handers coming up after Stanton.
08:26Left over the plate, poked into shadow right.
08:28Hernandez is there.
08:30Yamamoto's about to get a rousing ovation from this crowd.
08:33In his World Series debut, he holds the New York Yankees
08:36to one hit over six in the third.
08:38He retires the last 11 that he faces.
08:42Ohtani on base for the first time in game two.
08:45You think about getting a good read on Holmes
08:50and possibly trying to swipe second base.
08:53After stealing 59 bases during the regular season
08:56in 12-plus games so far this postseason,
08:59Shohei does not have a single stolen base.
09:02So, there goes Shohei.
09:03Teoscar takes the pitch.
09:04The throw down. The tag.
09:06Got him!
09:07So, Ohtani drops to 0 for 2 in stolen base attempts
09:12in the postseason, and he's still on the ground.
09:15Ohtani is rolling around in pain.
09:17He is holding his left wrist.
09:18Uh-oh. Oh, no.
09:20Ohtani is still on the ground.
09:22Yosuke Nakajima, Will Ireton, Dave Roberts
09:24all hustling out of the Dodger dugout.
09:27Right now, it's a caught stealing to end the seventh inning,
09:30but the fear is much, much worse with Ohtani.
09:32He is not moving that left arm.
09:35He is being attended to,
09:36and there are faces and hands and palms.
09:39Ohtani is being supported by Yosuke Nakajima.
09:44That right wrist and forearm,
09:46which hit the dirt as he slid with his feet.
09:49Just the worst possible ending
09:51to the bottom of the seventh inning.
09:53And we're getting word for the Dodgers' dugout.
09:55And it was his shoulder.
09:56We don't yet know any specifics
09:58about what the injury might be,
10:00but a shoulder issue for Ohtani.
10:03And a hush has fallen over Dodger Stadium.
10:06The Dodgers are three outs away in game two.
10:09They lead New York 4-1.
10:11Blake trying in on the mound.
10:13The Dodgers' highest leverage reliever.
10:15Juan Soto leads off against Blake Trinan.
10:18The payoff.
10:19Soto drills a high line into right field,
10:22backs his back, and launches it down the wall.
10:25Soto starts the ninth with a base hit.
10:27He's got both looks for the Yankees,
10:29and he looks into that dugout and says,
10:31let's go, down to their last three outs.
10:34Now it's Judge, whose struggles have continued tonight.
10:37He's 0-3, two more Ks.
10:39Trinan's 0-2.
10:41Judge watches when it's overthrown to the backstop,
10:45and Soto's to second.
10:46Trinan's 1-2 pitch.
10:49Got him swinging.
10:50Judge strikes out for a third time tonight,
10:53the sixth time in this World Series.
10:56One down, two to go.
10:58Yankees trying to get the tying run to the plate,
11:00have a shot here in the ninth inning.
11:02Stands 0-3.
11:04Off the bag, and the Yankees catch a break in the ninth.
11:08Soto's in to score, and it's 4-2.
11:11A bullet that finds the bag,
11:14and the tying run comes to the plate
11:15for the Yankees in the ninth.
11:17Well, he hit it so hard, I'm surprised the bag's still there.
11:20He hits this ball off the bag, and you said a one-hopper,
11:24and Stanton remains a threat at the plate.
11:28And all you can ask for, John, is a shot in the ninth inning.
11:30They're going to have it right here with Jazz Chisholm.
11:323-2 pitch.
11:34Chisholm corks a base hit to right field.
11:38Tying run aboard, and the go-ahead run coming up.
11:41Yankees on their last breaths right here.
11:43Down 1-0 in the series,
11:45down 4-1 coming into the ninth inning.
11:47They've played at one.
11:48They've got the tying run aboard,
11:50and Rizzo at the plate.
11:51Another 2-2.
11:52Rizzo got hit, and the bases are loaded.
11:56There you go. That's what he does.
11:58That's an element of his game that makes him so dangerous
12:01because the pitcher has to get in there,
12:04but you got to be really good.
12:05Yankees have loaded the bases.
12:07They're running the bank in this ninth inning.
12:09They pinch run with Aislato Cabrera for Rizzo.
12:11He represents the go-ahead run.
12:13Stanton's at third. Chisholm's at second.
12:16The tying run.
12:17Such a big moment for a kid growing up in New York,
12:20replacing Derek Jeter.
12:22This is a Derek Jeter moment right now
12:25for the New York Yankees.
12:26Another 2-2.
12:28The ball is down on strikes.
12:31Two gone in the nine.
12:33Front side completely gone,
12:35and at that point, so committed
12:36that there is no chance.
12:38That pitch was way outside, but to Anthony Volpe,
12:41it looked like it was going to be there for the longest time.
12:44Blake Trinan gives him everything that he can,
12:46unloading the tank,
12:48and Dave Roberts is going to go to Alex Vecchia,
12:51looking for the 27th out of this game
12:54and looking for a 2-0 series lead.
12:56In the shadows, the lights turned off.
12:57Jose Trevino merged from that Yankees dugout
13:00out of the dark right into the spotlight.
13:02The bases loaded in the ninth inning,
13:04and Alex Vecchia is on the defensive.
13:07Trevino hits a high fly ball.
13:09Left field, playable for Tommy Edmund,
13:11who calls for it, and that's a win for L.A.,
13:15and that's a 2-0 World Series lead.
13:19It takes Alex Vecchia one pitch
13:22to put out the bases loaded fire.
13:25As the Dodgers leave them loaded for New York
13:28and hang on to win by a final of 4-2.
