00:00All right, a lot's been said let's give you exactly what we're talking about
00:04Channel 7 story two weeks before he was suspended for violating the NFL's performance enhancing substance policy
00:10Lions wide receiver Jamison Williams was nearly arrested was not arrested by Detroit police over a gun found in a vehicle
00:18Now as a result of questions by channel 7 wondering what actually took place here
00:23The department is investigating why JMO was released from custody after officers had planned to take him to jail
00:30the receiver came into contact with police after midnight on October 8th when the police pulled over a vehicle being driven by JMO's brother near
00:38The corner of Connor and Jefferson Avenue. The vehicle stopped was stopped for speeding according to the police
00:44When questioned by the officer JMO's brother disclosed that there were two guns in the car
00:48Which is his obligation and he did that properly
00:51The first laid in the backseat while the second according to police was under JMO's seat
00:55Officers found the gun in the backseat was registered to the brother who had a CPL
01:00The gun under JMO's seat was properly registered to JMO
01:04But he did not possess a CPL the officer on site concluded
01:09This was a problem and told Williams JMO that he was going to be taken into custody for carrying a concealed weapon
01:16It's clear from the body cam footage. The officer doesn't know who he is
01:20But repeatedly
01:21JMO would remind him quote. I play for the Lions, bro. I'm Jameson Williams minutes later, bro
01:27I play for the Detroit Lions minutes later once more bro
01:30I play for the Lions the officer told Williams his position did not influence whether or not he'd be arrested
01:35So good for this officer seems like he wants to carry out the law at one point during the stop
01:41Williams brother told police the gun belongs to him
01:43But later on JMO would admit that the gun is his quote. I got the gun for protection
01:48Don't you guys know where I live Detroit?
01:51Williams was handcuffed at the plate and placed in the back of the squad car in an interview on Monday Detroit police commander Michael McGinnis
01:58Supported the officers on scene. I feel like there was probable cause to arrest
02:02He was under arrest by the patrol officer and because of that he should have been conveyed to the Detroit Detention Center and processed
02:08But JMO wasn't taken to jail
02:10Instead a supervisor was called to the scene the department says that's not unusual for a high-profile stop
02:15And the precaution was made to make sure policy is followed in cases that could create media coverage
02:20So by JMO saying who he was it did invite a more delayed process and more, you know supervision within a few minutes
02:27The sergeant arrived on the scene. Unlike the responding officers. The sergeant was a Lions fan immediately recognized JMO by name
02:33Bodycam footage shows that he had cell phone wallpaper of a Lions logos
02:37This guy big Lions fan
02:38over the next 30 minutes
02:40The sergeant would make a series of phone calls to higher ranking officials trying to determine if
02:44Williams needed to be arrested or if the CPL covered both at one point
02:48The sergeant is seen leaning into the arresting officer saying I'm so mad at you
02:53Commander McGinnis who reviewed the footage said that was in a jovial way. He wasn't like, you know
02:58Reprimanding them right after conferring with multiple supervisors
03:01The sergeant makes two more phone calls and it appears JMO is gonna be taken to jail
03:05Be advised he's coming in quote you might want to make special accommodations the sergeant says in a phone call
03:10He's gonna be there for carrying a concealed weapon
03:13He says in another so even this sergeant who is a Lions fan goes
03:16Hey, the facts are what they are. I've tried to make a million calls. It's been a half hour a
03:20Ready the facility. He's going to jail
03:23Minutes later things changed the sergeant spoke to a lieutenant who said Williams should be released from custody
03:29The lieutenant side of the conversation cannot be heard the sergeant says, okay beautiful, I'll let him go you're a bleeping hero
03:37Thank you so much
03:38Williams to be taken out of handcuffs gun returned police report was not written
03:42No warrant request was submitted prompted by questions from Channel 7 like wait, that doesn't add up
03:48Detroit police have launched an internal affairs investigation into the stop and the decision not to arrest him
03:54Chief James White was very unhappy about the totality of the circumstances here even go as far as to say he was pissed off
04:01Commander McGinnis said last week DPD submitted a warrant request to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office
04:06Williams is facing a charge of carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle
04:11For the sake of Williams his attorney Todd flood released a statement on
04:14October 8th my clients were pulled over for an alleged traffic violation during the course of the stop my clients were both cooperative and respectful
04:20with police officers
04:22With the two pistols that were found in the vehicle
04:24They were both properly registered and the driver in the vehicle had the proper credentials to carry them
04:28We have cooperated with law enforcement and will continue to do so end quote. That's where we're at today. Yeah
04:35It looks like that lieutenant pulled some strings and got JMo out of a sticky situation that both the officers and even Lions fan
04:43sergeant thought
04:44Was a crime
04:46Having the firearm legally, but without the CPL in that case is a felony. Maybe it gets pled down to a misdemeanor
04:51Maybe they can sort it out and try to argue that they're both being claimed by his brother either way
04:56None of that happened because the police just wanted to make it go away, which is a problem
05:00I know people are going well use a celebrity this happens
05:01It's not supposed to work that way the laws are supposed to be applied equally to all of us if the police aren't going to
05:07Apply the laws equally to all of us
05:09That's a huge story that one of our local news stations should be digging into it happens to involve the Lions
05:15So some fans are going you're trying to tear down JMo JMo's actions are at the center of this
05:21JMo is doing this to JMo
05:25Period how it's being discussed is only because of what he did no one is creating a story, right?
05:32It already existed and is now being shared and told
05:35And even if he's arrested doesn't mean he is either ultimately charged or is charged with a felony you're saying moving forward
05:41Yeah, moving forward. Yeah, it could have been pled down to a
05:45And still couldn't probably likely will be so it's you know
05:51When you look at all the facts that are there did he get preferential treatment sure seems like it looks like it
05:58Yeah, it will will he get that moving forward?
06:03To BD, and I don't know and what's the NFL's role in this moving forward John like what do you think there?
06:08How they view this if?
06:10Ultimately he's not charged with anything goes away. There's not much that they could do yeah, and
06:15If this had happened on NFL
06:18Ground on an NFL facility now the NFL has
06:22Jurisdiction they really don't have jurisdiction until it would would have happened or he violates the personal conduct policy
06:30I ask you if he does end up getting
06:32Like arrested and charged and facing with the NFL then step in as a conduct issue
06:38I think they will wait to see if he is ultimate what like what is guilty?
06:42Is he guilty what is he guilty of what does he plead to sure then the NFL will make their decision?
06:48The chances that he gets suspended for this incident slim to none, okay?
06:53I think the Lions. I don't think they've done anything wrong in this instance. They did not have a player who was arrested now
07:00the Lions may have
07:02Breathe the sigh of relief in this that they don't lose the player right I mean
07:05It's not their job to police the city of Detroit, so I don't know that the Lions necessarily did something wrong here John
07:11No, I didn't do anything wrong
07:12And they're just gonna deal with the cards that are dealt to them right and it now
07:16It's a matter of what how do they handle Jamison Williams?
07:20What is that relationship like and what is it like between Jamison Williams and Antoine Randall?
07:25Oh the quarter the the wide receiver coach between him and Dan Campbell bad homes ultimately
07:32You know Sheila like where?
07:34How annoyed are they and what does that a level of annoyance?
07:38Raised to because if he still continues to produce and his production on the field outweighs the distractions
07:46He'll still be lying. Yeah, if you're not suspended you can play and outperform
07:51nonsense
07:52If you get suspended, and he's been suspended two different times
07:56Then you can't outplay the nonsense and Dan Campbell and the Lions knew that this had happened before
08:03They addressed the media with the performance enhancing substance so any any
08:08Frustration that you had heard from them
08:10Yeah, probably factored this into
08:13And they have also said that they they will have his back that they're gonna give him every chance that he's
08:17So they have and they have and I think he's talented. They certainly want to give him every chance, but
08:22The way I put it is I don't know how long he'll be in Detroit unless he can shape up
