00:00Ms Price's body was found with six stab wounds in blood stained clothing in her South Melbourne
00:07apartment in early May 2020 where police believe it may have been left for a number of days.
00:13Barbaro had already fled interstate by that point and wasn't arrested in New South Wales
00:18until about two weeks after Ms Price's death and although he maintains his innocence, DNA
00:22evidence linked him back to the grisly scene.
00:26Court today heard the pair had a volatile and acrimonious relationship characterised
00:31by Barbaro's violent outburst towards her to the extent that an intervention order against
00:35him had been taken out at the time of her death.
00:38The judge regarded this as an aggravating factor in her murder as well as the fact that
00:43she was essentially defenceless and helpless against his savage onslaught.
00:48Her death left a young boy motherless and a family who are mostly from Tasmania with
00:52deep and ongoing pain.
00:54Outside court today, Ms Price's mother said the sentence wasn't long enough.
00:58No matter how long it gets, it's not long enough because my daughter's life's been taken.
01:04He's been taken away from his mum.
01:10The judge recognised Barbaro's troubled childhood and serious mental health issues as mitigating
01:15factors but said his moral culpability over the murder was ultimately high and his remorse
01:21and insight into the enormity of his crime essentially none.
01:25He'll face a non-parole period of 22 years.
