00:00Empty seats and exhausted delegations after 12 days of vigorous debate with a record attendance,
00:08the COP16 Biodiversity Summit in Colombia was wrapped up despite some unfinished business.
00:15Among the 23 goals to be implemented, an agreement on financing policies to preserve nature by
00:212030 has yet to be reached, after Nordic countries opposed the request for the creation of a
00:26new fund for nature.
00:28Other countries also failed to adopt a new framework for monitoring countries' progress
00:33on tackling biodiversity loss.
00:35All of these will need to be revisited at inter-sessional meetings next year.
00:40Now we have to move forward and work with what we have, there are two pillars to be
00:45implemented that were not approved and remained in a status quo, but I don't think that undermines
00:50the other results that were achieved.
00:52Different nations also found consensus on a benefit-sharing fund to distribute plant
00:58genetic resources for food and agriculture across developing countries, and agreed to
01:03include and recognize Afro-descendant and indigenous people in Latin America and the
01:08Caribbean, giving these groups more visibility and a voice in future negotiations.
01:15We are gaining the opportunity to participate in decisions that have always been made without
01:21us, supposedly for us.
01:25But an ecological emergency remains.
01:27At the current rate, the goal of protecting and conserving at least 30% of land and sea
01:32by the end of the decade is out of reach.
01:35According to the Protected Planet Report 2024, only 17.6% of the world's land and inland
01:43waters are currently in protected areas.
