Eurostat data reveals which EU citizens travelled the most on national and international rail lines in 2023, marking a record year for train travel.

00:00Europe's railways have never been so busy.
00:09Rail travel in the EU has reached a new peak,
00:13with 429 billion kilometers made by passengers across the block last year.
00:21That's the highest number since data collection began in 2004.
00:27Including both national and international travel,
00:31Germans made the most trips, over 2.7 billion,
00:37followed by the French, over 1.2 billion,
00:41and the Italians, with over 800 million.
00:45Train journeys increased almost everywhere in the EU between 2022 and 2023,
00:53particularly in Luxembourg, up 23%,
00:57Ireland and Croatia, 22% each, and Spain, 16%.
01:03Greece, minus 17%,
01:07and Bulgaria, minus 5%,
01:10were the only countries that saw a decline.
01:16French people love to travel abroad by train,
01:20as France is the country with the most international trips made,
01:25followed by Germany, Denmark and Sweden.
