00:00Nicaragua is a leader in agricultural research and production in the region.
00:04From Managua, our colleague Kenya Doña with the report.
00:12The National Center for Plant Growth is one of the areas located in the Augusto Cesar Sandino National Agricultural Research Center,
00:20a pioneer in the production of in vitro plants,
00:23allowing significant advances in the micropropagation of musaceae, fruits and tubers.
00:32A single bud that we extract from the field from the mother plots can become 200 or 500 plants.
00:39What the producers do in the field when they sow a seed in the soil, here it is done in an artificial culture medium.
00:46That is to say that we provide the vitamins and minerals and everything that is required for the plant to develop.
00:53And once the plant develops, we move it outside to acclimatize it and condition it to the environment.
01:03Each year, this center produces more than 1,509,000 plants that are distributed to producers throughout the country
01:12to support and strengthen the national agricultural sector.
01:17Here we create plants free of pests and diseases with a high genetic potential and increased productivity.
01:24In other words, if the national average, the producer produces one bunch or 24 units per bunch of bananas.
01:31Here the material we select and produce should be above 50 units.
01:47In addition, the government of Nicaragua supports producers with the delivery of these plants resistant to the effects of climate change.
01:57This is a priority in the country for our good government in terms of food security and sovereignty.
02:04But also the advancement of technology made available to producer families
02:10so that they can easily face climate change, the threat of pests and diseases.
02:15And also so that they can also face the issue of the market.
02:23Among the successful experiences of this program is the young Aileen Martinez-Lewis
02:29who works in the banana industry contributing to the development of modern and efficient agriculture.
02:37We began to have relations with the center and we found that they had these varieties that could work for us.
02:45We started to study them in an area where we are developing banana in vitro.
02:51We are expecting between 50 to 60 units per plant and we have seen that in the case of its reproduction
02:57it has started to reproduce quite well and quickly within the parameters we expected.
03:02In many cases we have 5 to 10 offspring.
03:07So we are happy with that and I think it is something to value.
03:11The producer is no longer alone.
03:13We are now all hand in hand to move the country forward.
03:26Nicaragua targets innovation and sustainability.
03:31Nicaragua targets innovation and sustainable development in the agricultural sector,
03:37benefiting thousands of producers and boosting the country's economic growth and progress
03:43in the fight against poverty.
