00:00I didn't have anybody. I didn't know anyone in the scene.
00:02I didn't know anyone in the industry.
00:04Tak ada connection, tak ada kabel, tak ada apa-apa.
00:06So, really, I was scouted from YouTube.
00:16Hi guys, this is Di and Trisha,
00:18and you're listening to my Celebrity Podcast.
00:30Oh my god.
00:32I rasa I've never told people this part of my life,
00:40where I came from, like post-pandemic.
00:43I rasa macam where I came from has always been a mystery
00:47for people who tak kenal saya dari awal, you know.
00:50So, I'm from Bangi, Selangor.
00:56And I came from a middle-income family.
01:01Keluarga yang sederhana.
01:04Sekolah SMK.
01:06Normal. Pakai tidur di sekolah.
01:08You know, things like that.
01:10Koko, you know.
01:11I love math.
01:14I love English. I love art.
01:17I took piano lessons.
01:19I self-taught guitar.
01:21I'm the second daughter of five siblings.
01:26And my mom was a teacher.
01:29And she is a writer. She's a novelist.
01:31And my dad just works in private sector.
01:33So, it's very average chain. Very normal family.
01:38But alhamdulillah, my family's still together right now.
01:41Came from a good support system, I would say.
01:47Yeah, and then at 14, I started menjunak-junak kandiri in YouTube.
01:53And I also became the YouTube girl at 16 years old.
02:03Yeah.
02:06Well, 14-year-old Diane wanted to be a Disney star.
02:13You know, I grew up with Disney.
02:15Watching a lot of Disney things.
02:17And that's where even Nisibet Gwaii.
02:19I'm like, wow! Someday I'm gonna be there.
02:21I'm gonna be a Disney star.
02:24And so, I thought...
02:25Masa tu, I just wanted to showcase my talents on YouTube.
02:30And then I started learning guitar.
02:32And then started posting like tons of covers.
02:37At that point, it wasn't a big thing on YouTube yet.
02:41But there were a few like singer-songwriters,
02:44female singer-songwriters that I remember that started with me.
02:49I think I would say like...
02:52Najwa Latif.
02:53She was, I think, was the first one who like breakthrough on YouTube.
02:59If I'm not mistaken.
03:00I think her song Cinta Muka Buku ke, something like that.
03:03And then, I was like the third or fourth wave.
03:07I was the same kind of time with Tasha Manshahar.
03:12I would say Nita as well.
03:14So, we were...
03:16Yeah, we were in the same batch of YouTube girls at that point.
03:20Yeah, so...
03:21It was really funny.
03:25Like thinking about that right now.
03:26Because back then, it was just small shows.
03:28We would do just like online acoustic sessions.
03:32And I would perform at like Frinjan.
03:34I would perform at like...
03:36Before X, it was Twitter, you know.
03:39So, they would have like TweetFest.
03:41I would perform at TweetFest.
03:43Simple set up, just with my guitar.
03:45It was the most simplest time back then.
03:49Why are you making me like ingat balik all these things?
03:51Oh my god, it's insane.
03:54Yeah, and there would be a lot of like indie festivals.
03:57And I would be the indie girl with the guitar.
04:00And at that time, Yuna was the MySpace girl.
04:05And she'd already like kickstarted her career.
04:08And yeah, and I would never think that I would be a friend.
04:12Like a really close friend now.
04:13So, we shared a lot of things when it comes to like things like this.
04:16It was very cute coming from where I came from.
04:20It was very like innocent.
04:22Serious.
04:23It was so innocent at that time.
04:25So, at that time, indie people were thriving.
04:29And so, the indie scene was filled with like just...
04:33Young boys and girls with big dreams.
04:35To just like make it and bring like indie scene.
04:40Like our songwriting to the mass main media.
04:52Yeah, of course.
04:54I didn't have anybody.
04:55I didn't know anyone in the scene.
04:57I didn't know anyone in the industry.
04:58No connection, no cable, nothing.
05:00So, really, I was scouted from YouTube.
05:04And then from then, I think I was like,
05:08Okay, maybe this could be a thing for me.
05:11But I had to still study.
05:13I still had to like finish my degree and everything.
05:16And my mom was like, my parents like,
05:19Being Asian, you know, Asian household.
05:21Is it right to do this?
05:22Like, why don't you study accounting?
05:24And so, I did.
05:25You know, I took accounting for my diploma.
05:28I got...
05:29I was a deanly student for four semesters.
05:32And then after that, they were still like,
05:33No, you have to get a degree.
05:35And then I went on and get a degree in business.
05:39I was a deanly student too.
05:41And then after that, my parents were like,
05:43Okay, you can do whatever you want now.
05:46You know, but I was studying and working at the same time.
05:49I was doing shows in the weekend,
05:51classes on weekdays.
05:53Alhamdulillah, I still get like good results
05:55because I need to be an Asian daughter.
05:58And so, yeah, my mom and dad was proud.
06:00And because of that, they let me do whatever I want
06:03because I think in a way, I have to sort of prove to them
06:07that I can do this, you know.
06:10And so, because of that, I feel like
06:13they gave me the freedom to kind of make my own decisions
06:17into who I wanted to become
06:18because I got my degree, you know.
06:20So, I think that was one of the challenges.
06:23And second, it's just kind of like maneuver my way into
06:26because I just had to like make friends,
06:29be an adult, and be someone who
06:33is learning her way through the industry
06:35and learning the gains of it.
06:44I think growing up with art and music
06:47is something that I still have right now.
06:51I think maybe my...
06:53If there is, you know,
06:55my parents are amazing people,
06:57but if there's one thing that I can command to them,
06:59like, thank you for giving me this,
07:01it's that they really raised me up in an environment
07:06filled with love.
07:08That's one thing.
07:09And also, my dad sent me to piano lessons
07:13and my mom sent me to art class.
07:15So, I really feel like those experiences and what I studied
07:19shaped me into the person that I am today
07:22because art and love is still very much like...
07:28It really makes me as a person that I am today.
07:31And also, my mom is like very...
07:34Tekankan education.
07:36And so, I feel like that's what I want people to tekankan also
07:39because we didn't have influences back then.
07:41So, we didn't know that that was a thing.
07:43And so, we have to focus on education.
07:45But you know, in this day and age, everyone can be...
07:49You know, whatever they want with just record
07:51and whatever they want to do with it.
07:53But I still would highlight the importance of education
07:56because it really shapes your mindset
07:58and your decision-making and who you are
08:00and your values as a person and your principles.
08:03So, I feel like maybe because I came from there
08:06and my family is also simple.
08:11So, I feel like I still really want to have that humility in me.
08:17I think that's what I feel.
08:21You know?
08:27I don't feel like I'll ever be fully ready or fully prepared
08:31to face whatever that's out there.
08:36But I've learned a lot.
08:39I think maybe...
08:42I'm not sure if it is any point but
08:45maybe growing up as a second child
08:50or more so the middle sibling
08:55kind of like make you more independent in a way.
08:59I've always have a sort of very stubborn mindset
09:03in which like I have to get what I want.
09:06Like if I want this thing, I have to get it.
09:08And then, I will work towards that like 100%.
09:12So, I think maybe that's what makes me stubborn
09:15but in a good sense, in a good way.
09:18So, when we talk about anxiety, I feel like
09:21it's just what I developed as an adult.
09:27You know, from all this pressure
09:31and from strangers talking about you
09:34and just kind of like, huh?
09:36They think like that?
09:37Yeah, I have a lot of like
09:39going up into this industry
09:43and like, huh? They think like that?
09:45I have a lot of those moments.
09:47But, why a lot of like, huh?
09:51Huh? Like that.
09:52So, I just have to like get used to like
09:54other people's way of thinking.
09:57Yeah, so maybe that kind of gave me anxiety in a way.
10:02Thank you for watching episode 1.
10:04Stay tuned for episode 2
10:06with me in my celebrity podcast.
