00:00Tommy, a 3-2 defeat against Brighton in the National League Cup, plenty of dominance, chances created, a couple of goals, but some defensive errors there, maybe being costly?
00:10Probably the story of the season, although they're not always the same players. But yeah, we've scored two goals at home, should win the game, simple as that.
00:17Like you said, we dominated for long periods simply because they were down to 10 men from early on in the game.
00:22Just their fitness and their Premier League athleticism, basically, I think kept them in the game.
00:29But to a man like the Brighton guys, you should take a real pat on the back.
00:33It's a rear-guard action that they probably don't do too often because of the way they play the game, they usually really dominate the ball, but we did.
00:40Some of our lads can come out with some real credit for the way that they reacted to what was said at half-time, but some have to take a big long look in the mirror and knock on my door asking why they won't be playing for me.
00:51What sort of message did you have at half-time then to change things?
00:55I just thought we were dominant of the ball most of the game in the first half and second half, but when we got to the final third, I just thought there was a lack of quality on the final delivery,
01:04therefore the runs into the box weren't being made, and when those two things culminate and hit it off, you score goals, and that's what we did in the second half.
01:12We ended up being in the right places, making the right runs, making the right passes, being more positive,
01:18and ultimately we polished up our final third entries. We do a lot of repetitive work, you have to make sure the same things happen in terms of repeated actions.
01:28In high-level football, that's what you need to do, repeat, repeat, repeat, and things will go your way, and that's the way we had it.
01:35Obviously, I think the changes that we made or we had to make because of the injuries that we got affected us a little bit, but I've got no grumbles, they put three in our goal,
01:44and I think the people who keep it out have to have a look at themselves.
01:47First goal obviously comes from a nice move, and then Jack cuts it back for James Henry, and obviously he got two tonight, so good for him.
01:54It's not about individuals scoring goals, James Henry's a class act, the lad's got 600 football league games under his belt,
02:01and he's playing alongside some players there who've got the football intelligence of a goldfish.
02:06I respect James, and I appreciate what he brings to us, and he's a part of our group,
02:13so you're singling them out quite rightly because you've scored two goals,
02:17but I think there were three or four lads who could take some real praise from that game,
02:22because they haven't played a massive amount of football for our first team, although they have been in it,
02:28and they're making their way in the game, and I think some of our younger ones have shown our older ones,
02:33and when I say older ones, I mean our young 20s rather than our teens, how to apply themselves.
02:40Ryan Jones looked quite lively down the left.
02:43Yeah, I mean I thought first off, I'll be honest with you, I don't tell you what goes on in our dressing room very often,
02:48but I had a little advice for Ryan at half-time, and I thought he responded fantastically well,
02:55he was the best player on the pitch in the second half, on both teams,
02:58so that's pleasing because Ryan's a talented lad, and he needs to be working like that in every training session
03:06so he gets on the pitch more, because like you said, he did really well down that left-hand side,
03:10again against some good footballers, some good young lads who were at Brighton or Valby,
03:15and so you should take a lot from the game, right.
03:19Obviously they're a very good technical side, and obviously they have that sort of Premier League coaching,
03:23so it's a good test to come up against that in this competition, I guess.
03:27Yeah, I think you'll have to ask their staff, but I would say that they probably enjoyed that more,
03:33not just because they won the game at the end in the manner that they did,
03:36but the fact that how hard their lads worked to keep the ball out of their goal,
03:39because it was a complete rear-guard action for 94 of the 102 minutes or whatever it was.
03:45So we've got to take that punch on the nose, we've got to regroup very quickly,
03:50have a rest, and then get back at it on Thursday with the preparation for the league game on Saturday.
03:55Obviously the early red card was a clear decision, he was just over-enthusiastic wasn't he?
03:59Yeah, I mean he's a young lad, he might have that in him, I don't know.
04:03Sometimes I think early on in the game, I don't think he'd give the referee much option to be honest with you.
04:09The markings on Haddie's leg are quite nasty, but whether he meant it or not,
04:15I wouldn't question the lad's integrity to be honest with you.
04:18He's a young pro, and we've all made tackles that we've regretted after doing them.
04:23Haddie managed to carry on after that, but then obviously had another knock and had to come off.
04:27I'll tell you what, he showed some decent courage staying on the pitch,
04:31because he's got a mark from his knee to his ankle, and I mean that.
04:35But then he took a clash of heads and I think he was just a little bit discombobulated,
04:39so the safest thing in the world is to get him off.
04:42He needed a few stitches in his head, so we took him off as a precaution really.
04:47I thought Maxi was another bright spark for us, he's gone on there and looked like a presence,
04:52he's mobile and he looks like he knows what the goal is, but not the score, at least one.
04:56When I wake up in the morning and watch that back, there'll be more positives than there are now.
05:01But like most people who know everything about football, it's a bad result and everybody's rubbish
05:08and I don't know what I'm doing at the moment.
05:10It's not quite that black and white there is it? Obviously it's not one year else than that.
05:16And obviously Geordie was the other injury wasn't it?
05:19We'll not know until 24 hours or whatever, but it might be that we have to bring young Pat back from Farnham.
05:26I'd have no problems at all having him tussling with Marcus for number one shirt.
05:31The three of them boys train with us every day, so if Geordie is going to be missing for a little while,
05:37then it'll be Pat that comes back.
05:39And back to league action now, we were saying on Saturday, thoughts leading up to that?
05:44Yeah, it's the game we have where the military come in and do the Remembrance Day,
05:52which is always a special occasion here at Old Shot and of course we look forward to that.
05:56But ultimately it's the next league game and our heads have been on it from the game on Saturday.
06:02This is something in between.
06:04So our preparation for the vast majority of the group, including the players who played some minutes tonight,
06:10is really in preparation for Wheelstone, so this is the next training session for us.
