00:002024 is virtually certain to eclipse 2023 as the world's warmest since records began.
00:08The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, or C3S, reports in January to October,
00:14the average global temperature had been so high that 2024 was sure to be the world's
00:18hottest year.
00:20The scientists say 2024 will also be the first year in which the planet is more than 1.5
00:25degrees Celsius hotter than in 1850-1900 when humans began burning fossil fuels on
00:31an industrial scale.
00:32The data is released ahead of the United Nations' COP 29 climate summit in Azerbaijan, where
00:38countries will try to agree to a huge increase in funding to tackle climate change.
00:43Countries agreed in the 2015 Paris Agreement to try to prevent global warming surpassing
00:481.5 degrees Celsius to avoid its worst consequences.
00:52Scientists now expect the world to breach that threshold around 2030.
