00:00Searching for answers in Darwin's North, just yesterday two women died after being
00:07hit by a car on Trawa Road near Kajurina Beach, with a third woman fighting for her life.
00:15It's an area that's known to be frequented by a number of groups of people, and that
00:23alone is making it quite a complex investigation, trying to narrow down who was there at what
00:29It's the second fatal hit and run in the very same area, with two others dying after being
00:36run over in April, and it's raising alarms for police.
00:42We have concerns about the antisocial behaviour that occurs there, that we'd be looking into
00:47perhaps trying to get more CCTV coverage of there, perhaps more lighting would help.
00:54Whatever the circumstances, it brings the number of lives lost on empty roads to a 16-year
01:02high, every one of the 56 fatalities taking a toll on families, friends and emergency
01:10service personnel.
01:11It's become really fatiguing for them, as we've sort of said there's been 807 car crashes
01:17just this year, and 107 of those have involved pedestrians.
01:23Fast responders fear people are not following the rules and becoming increasingly distracted
01:29while on the roads.
01:31Mobile phone usage is really bad at the moment, and it takes a lot of time, you're not watching
01:37what you're doing, so you're not alert, and this is causing a lot of the crashes I believe.
01:42As we approach the holiday season, police say they're more visible on the roads, with
01:47more RVs and speed cameras, to stop the already tragic toll from going any higher.
