00:00Exactly what are you a doctor of, Mr. Venkman?
00:03Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most hated film and TV actors.
00:08Not for anything they've done personally, but due to their most famous roles.
00:11Some spoilers to come.
00:12Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Biff Tannen Museum.
00:23There may be such a thing as too good acting.
00:26Dirty Harry first inspired major controversy with its depiction of police brutality and civil rights violations.
00:32And then, there's Andy Robinson's portrayal of the serial killer Scorpio, whom the titular Harry foils and eventually kills.
00:38Robinson's performance was so convincing that the actor received death threats for his role.
00:43Talk about a backhanded compliment.
00:44Oh no, you lift that hand once more, and I won't let you know who the girl is.
00:48It didn't help that Scorpio was based on the real-life Zodiac Killer and human trafficker, Gary Stephen Crist.
00:54Even more unfortunately, Scorpio's psychopathy allegedly inspired real-life copycat crimes,
00:59such as the Faraday School kidnapping in 1972, and the 1976 Chowchilla kidnapping.
01:05After Dirty Harry's success, Robinson was typecast as psychotic characters for a time.
01:09Stay safe out there.
01:19This role is perhaps one of the most notorious cases of fan harassment.
01:23Sorry. I work behind pipes all day.
01:26Doing talking with... resistance heroes is not my forte.
01:29Star Wars The Last Jedi introduces Kelly Marie Tran as mechanic and resistance member Rose Tico,
01:35who is suggested to be Finn's love interest.
01:37You'd think she would endear fans for saving the life of a major character.
01:40I saved you.
01:44Tell me.
01:46That's how we're gonna win.
01:48Not fighting what we hate.
01:50Saving what we love.
01:52But much of the fan backlash was mostly due to Tran being an Asian-American.
01:55The harassment was so extreme that she had to quit social media.
01:59Tran was unfortunately not alone.
02:01Finn's actor, John Boyega, also experienced racially-charged fan backlash,
02:05while Daisy Ridley's Rey was accused of being a Mary Sue.
02:08But Tran's situation became particularly thorny when Rose's role was suspiciously reduced in The Rise of Skywalker.
02:14Wait. Do we believe this?
02:16It cannot be!
02:18Pam Ferris as Miss Agatha Trunchbull
02:20Matilda
02:21Based on Roald Dahl's novel, Danny DeVito's Matilda has become a kid movie classic in its own right.
02:27Unfortunately, Pam Ferris didn't win over kids by playing headmistress Agatha Trunchbull with mesmerizing brutality.
02:33Did you know it was illegal to enter someone's home without their permission?
02:39The actress also did not have the best time with the role to begin with,
02:42sustaining several injuries while on set.
02:44She even had the top of her finger sliced off by wires during the scene where Trunchbull threw Amanda.
02:49Ferris went on to have a varied career in film and theater, but she permanently haunted childhood memories.
02:54Do I allow pigs in my school?
02:57My mommy thinks they're sweet.
03:00Harry Potter fans will also recognize her as the cruel Aunt Marge in The Prisoner of Azkaban.
03:05Like all great actors, Ferris disappeared into her roles a little too well.
03:09This boy, Bruce Bogtrotter, is none other than a vicious sneak thief.
03:17You're a disgusting criminal, aren't you?
03:19Number 5. Billy Zane as Kaladin Cal Hockley, Titanic
03:24In this iconic historical romance, young upper-class Rose develops a romance with working-class artist Jack.
03:30Give me your hand.
03:39Now close your eyes.
03:40Unfortunately, the wealthy Kal Hockley, played by Billy Zane, plans to condemn her to a loveless marriage of convenience.
03:47Soon, Kal reveals his true callous nature as he abuses Rose both verbally and physically,
03:52then frames Jack for theft. What a charmer.
03:55Two things dare to me have disappeared this evening.
03:57Now that one is back, I have a pretty good idea where to find the other.
04:01Search him.
04:02Zane's great performance turned Kal into an iconic villain that incurred a lot of hate from fans.
04:07The hate was enough that Zane admitted his role was a double-edged sword for him,
04:10leading to his being typecast in villain roles.
04:13You look at me when I'm talking to you.
04:15Mr. Hockley.
04:16Not now, we're busy.
04:17His effective performances in that hype cast is a double-edged sword indeed.
04:21Number 4. Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, Twilight Franchise
04:25I dream about being with you forever.
04:28Forever.
04:29Actress receiving hate for playing villains is one thing, but the romantic heroine?
04:33Bookish introvert Bella Swan falls in love with the tormented Edward Cullen
04:37and strives to join him in his vampire world.
04:39The character has received much hate in her own right,
04:41but Kristen Stewart's performance was also criticized as flat.
04:44It didn't help matters that Bella in the Twilight books was less socially awkward
04:48and much more emotionally expressive.
04:50You alright?
04:50I'm fine, Dad. Calm down.
04:52Fortunately, Stewart has gone on to receive accolades for her stellar acting.
04:552021's Spencer even earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
04:59Maybe Bella was ill-suited for her acting-wise.
05:02Either way, Stewart definitely did not deserve the hate.
05:05The entire family will be implicated if this ends badly.
05:09Badly, as in...
05:12I would become the male.
05:14Number 3. William Atherton as Walter Peck, Ghostbusters
05:18Walter Peck is a killjoy EPA inspector
05:21who believes the Ghostbusters to be conmen faking the ghost encounters.
05:25He even tries to have them arrested.
05:26I'm Walter Peck.
05:28I represent the Environmental Protection Agency, the 3rd District.
05:32William Atherton's memorable performance would backfire on him
05:35after Ghostbusters became a box office hit and a cultural phenomenon.
05:38When Murray improvised a vulgar nickname for Peck,
05:41it led to people shouting it at Atherton on the street into the 90s.
05:44Everything was fine with our system until the power grid was shut off by... here.
05:48He couldn't even go into a bar without people wanting to fight him.
05:51All this for a super-silliest government inspector trying to do his job?
05:55Autocratic characters aside, Atherton didn't deserve such harassment.
05:58He still had a varied film career, notably playing a similar jerk in Die Hard.
06:02All's well that ends well.
06:04Not interested in your opinion, just shut it off.
06:06Number 2. Thomas F. Wilson as Biff Tannen, Back to the Future franchise
06:11The original Back to the Future introduces Thomas Wilson as high school jerk Biff Tannen,
06:16who picks on George and Marty McFly in the 50s.
06:18I... can I assume that your insurance is gonna pay for the damage?
06:24My insurance? It's your car!
06:26He even tries to force himself on Marty's future mother.
06:28He ultimately gets his comeuppance when Marty changing the past
06:31leads to Biff becoming a mere valet in the new future.
06:34See, there's Biff out there waxing right now.
06:36Wilson returns to the role in the sequels.
06:38It even gets a long-running gag of landing in a pile of manure at the end of each film.
06:42But playing the character took its toll on Wilson, who received much hate from fans.
06:46Ironically, he himself was picked on as a kid and disliked playing the role.
06:50There are consequences for being so good at being bad.
06:53What are you looking at, butthead?
06:58Say hi to your mom for me.

07:15Number 1 and a gun as Skyler White, Breaking Bad
07:19In a series replete with criminals and sociopaths,
07:22who would have thought that a suburban housewife would become the most hated character?
07:26Where is Hank?
07:29Played by Anna Gunn, Skyler White becomes suspicious of husband Walter's illegal activities
07:34and tries to stop him from endangering the family.
07:36It's what any wife would do until she becomes Walt's partner in crime.
07:40Skyler is not perfect, but her actions and motivations are realistic.
07:43I'm gonna make you a deal, Walt.
07:46I won't tell Hank.
07:48And I won't tell your children.
07:50Or anybody else. Nobody will hear it from me.
07:53Regardless, she received so much hate that Gunn became the target of massive online harassment.
07:58It was so bad, Gunn even wrote an op-ed in the New York Times.
08:02Gunn's award-winning performance makes this hate even more egregious,
08:05but she's acknowledged that it has died down through the years.
08:08We will not say anything about her, ever.
08:15Which other film or TV actor do you feel gets unreasonable hate?
08:18Let us know in the comments down below.
08:20I'm Edward Cullen. You're Bella.
08:23Cullen. Yes.
