00:00JJ, you sure they're there?
00:02I mean, do you even need to ask?
00:04Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:05And today, we're counting down our picks for our favorite moments on Outer Banks
00:10that didn't appear in the script
00:12and were thus seemingly improvised by this talented cast.
00:16Since some of these moments are pivotal to the plot,
00:18a spoiler alert is now in effect.
00:21All the writers would tell you that's just them talking.
00:24Number 10.
00:25Housekeeping.
00:26Yeah, we good?
00:28There's nothing.
00:29Hey.
00:30Yeah?
00:30Don't let him do anything stupid.
00:32Oh, we won't.
00:33I'm not making promises.
00:34JJ is undoubtedly one of the most entertaining characters on the show,
00:38and we've loved him since day one.
00:41It turns out Rudy Pankow, who plays JJ,
00:44does not shy away from off-the-cuff acting,
00:47as we see right from the pilot episode.
00:55Housekeeping.
00:59When John B and JJ go to the motel to try and learn more about the shipwreck they came across,
01:05JJ's squeaky staff impersonation was not in the original script.
01:10It's a quick little moment, but it not only adds humor to the scene,
01:14it also gives us insight into his character's quirky and fun personality.
01:18Catastrophically stupid.
01:20Right.
01:21Well, stupid things have good outcomes all the time.
01:25Number 9.
01:26Cleo and Pope Kiss.
01:27I've been on my own since I was 14, okay?
01:31Never even hoped for anything except for surviving.
01:36Never even thought it could be another way.
01:39These last few months with you, you're showing me something different.
01:44Cleo is a welcome addition to the Pogues,
01:46and watching her spark with Pope turn into a flame has been so fun.
01:51We had to wait until the end of the third season to finally see them get together,
01:55but thanks to some improvisation from Jonathan Davis and Carlacea Grant,
02:00we got to see a real kiss from them.
02:02You know the Noah Love Club?
02:05Yeah.
02:06I quit.
02:16According to the two actors,
02:18the kiss shared between them was not supposed to be as intimate as it ended up being,
02:22with the script stating that they should share a kiss on the cheek.
02:25But luckily for their loyal fan base,
02:27the couple decided to go off script and went for it,
02:30and we think they definitely made the right call.
02:33It's like, oh well.
02:35At the end of the day, we were just gonna do it.
02:37It was gonna be off camera.
02:38I love that.
02:40We agree that we were just gonna kiss and see what happens.
02:43Yeah.
02:43It's way better that way.
02:45Number 8.
02:46John B Confronts Ward.
02:48The rivalry between John B and Ward Cameron leads to plenty of tense moments,
02:53but the one that really had us on the edge of our seats was in the Season 2 finale.
02:57No!
02:58No!
02:58It's your fault!
03:00Your fault!
03:05When John B and his friends sneak onto the coastal venture,
03:09all the simmering dynamics between the Pogues and the Kooks come to a boil.
03:14After John B tells Ward that he blames him for his father's supposed death,
03:18the emotion in his voice is palpable.
03:20I never get to say goodbye.
03:26Because of you.
03:31This is all my fault.
03:33As he was told to do by Ward actor Charles Esten,
03:36Chase Stokes made that scene his own.
03:39He speaks from the heart, doesn't stick to the script,
03:42and executes the scene absolutely perfectly.
03:45Welcome back to the Pogue life.
03:46Full Pogue.
03:47Full Pogue.
03:48Number 7.
03:49See you later, sweetheart.
03:51While we're talking about John B's rivals, let's pivot to Topper.
03:55You going to try to kill me again, Top?
03:57Yeah, here we go, here we go.
03:58It's always the Kook's fault, isn't it?
04:00In this scene, things are yet again getting heated between John B and Topper
04:04after the former involves Sarah in a robbery.
04:07Topper talks about how he is the one who cares about Sarah,
04:10and when John B warns him to back off, he improvises this condescending line.
04:16Get on the bike.
04:20See you later, sweetheart.
04:21Calling Topper sweetheart solidifies the fact that John B is not scared of him
04:26despite their violent history.
04:27John B is clearly not afraid to show his disdain for the Kooks at any time,
04:32and in this scene, it's just as hilarious as it is satisfying.
04:36Well, he's a tool.
04:39Yeah, tell me about it.
04:41I dated him.
04:42Number 6.
04:43Be safe.
04:44All right, you guys got rope?
04:45Got it.
04:45Grappling hook?
04:46We don't have a grappling hook.
04:47We're not Batman.
04:50Pulley?
04:50Check.
04:51Dark clothes.
04:52Got it.
04:52Flashlights?
04:54Check.
04:54All right, good.
04:55We're ready.
04:56The sixth episode of the first season has no shortage of spooky moments
05:00as the Pogues inspect the crane house where they think the gold may be stashed.
05:04Before Sarah and Kiara go inside, John B very sincerely tells Sarah to be safe,
05:10and Pope and JJ take this opportunity to make fun of him.
05:14Be safe.
05:15I'll be so safe.
05:17I'll be safe for you.
05:18This is pretty much exactly how we'd expect teenage boys to act.
05:22It makes this moment so funny and perfect,
05:25and learning that the actors ad-libbed this part makes it even better.
05:29I'm gonna kill you.
05:30But how would that keep us safe?
05:32Number 5.
05:33Poguelandia.
05:34One of the most famous storylines in Outer Banks would have been totally different
05:39if Rudy Pankow as JJ wasn't given as much freedom to be creative as he is.
05:46Dude, you're just always looking for attention, huh?
05:50Whatever it takes, right?
05:53Atta boy!
05:54After the Pogues get stranded on an island when they abandoned the coastal venture
05:58and the gold cross, JJ makes a proclamation.
06:02He names the island Poguelandia in an off-the-cuff moment,
06:06and describes a flag that would eventually come to fruition.
06:09It's gonna have a chicken on it, with a coconut bra, smoking a J, and Crocs.
06:15I could use a J.
06:16Can we vote on this?
06:17Shall we get to work?
06:18Let's get to work.
06:19This name was reportedly an off-the-cuff idea of Pankow's in real life as well.
06:23Meanwhile, the flag he describes of the chicken with Crocs smoking a joint
06:28is seen in the following season,
06:29where we also see an actual episode called Poguelandia.
06:33Woo!
06:35You did it, Josh!
06:37Poguelandia!
06:39Woo!
06:40Perfect!
06:41Number 4.
06:42JJ at Midsommar's.
06:44If you couldn't tell by now, let us say it one more time.
06:47Rudy Pankow loves to improvise.
06:50In this episode, it's not a random line or action that is ad-libbed,
06:54but several scenes.
06:55Like, the dynamic where I had to go talk to JD, Hope, or Maddie, who plays Sarah,
07:01and then to Drew, who plays Rafe, and then, like, hitting all those beats
07:05and making it work within, like, 30 minutes was, like, it was such a fun time.
07:10When John B. and JJ show up at the Kooks' Midsommar's party,
07:14JJ goes on an undercover mission as a waiter.
07:17While doing so, he calls a group at the party the Powerpuff Girls
07:21and calls Rose Lady Liberty, to name a few.
07:24It's okay, everybody.
07:25Do not panic.
07:26Let's leave it to the men and women in uniform, huh?
07:28Let's hear it for them.
07:29Rose, you look like Lady Liberty.
07:31It's good to see you again.
07:32Much of this was apparently just Pankow doing whatever he wanted,
07:35as the show co-creator and episode director Jonas Pate told him to
07:40do you, Rudy.
07:41And we have to say, it's probably better than whatever could have been written for these scenes.
07:45And it was just a fun, amazing feeling of, like, this is actually happening.
07:50It was like, I'm in at a party with all these people,
07:54and you feel the pressure of the cameras on you,
07:57but you have to take it out and, like, take it out of your mind.
08:00It was such a fun feeling.
08:01Number 3.
08:02The hot tub scene.
08:14The relationship between JJ and his father is a tumultuous part of the first season,
08:19with a lot of emotional scenes shared between the two.
08:22In this episode, JJ and Luke get into a physical altercation over money that sees the son get the
08:28upper hand on his dad after having been beaten by his father figure for years.
08:33Guess what now?
08:40I'm not scared of you anymore.
08:42Later, Key and Pope find him in a hot tub he impulsively bought.
08:46In one of the most gut-wrenching scenes of the show so far,
08:50JJ's friends see the bruises he's received from his dad,
08:53and he gets emotional talking about how they're his real family.
08:57I got this for you guys! Look what I did for you, all right?
09:00Look at this! Look at this!
09:03JJ.
09:04No, stop being emotional, it's fine, okay?
09:10I mean, it's sweet, right? Everything.
09:13Let's just get in.
09:16A lot of this speech is unscripted,
09:18and it shows how impressive these actors are when they're free to improvise.
09:22Number two, Country Club.
09:24What's up, Country Club? What's up? We're good, we're good.
09:27Stand down.
09:28This was reportedly ad-libbed by Barry actor Nicholas Cirillo,
09:32and has been around for several seasons so far,
09:35and it's perfect for both the character who says it and the character it's addressed to.
09:40Barry gets to know Rafe when they get involved in some lowbrow activities together,
09:45and he frequently calls him by the unscripted nickname, Country Club.
09:49Country Club!
09:52Now I'm not supposed to be blackmailing you with some sh-t like that.
09:55Not only is it fitting for Rafe,
09:57but it also highlights how significant the class differences are in the Outer Banks.
10:02Even though there's an intense rivalry amongst Kooks and Pogues,
10:05they all interact with each other in ways that indicate they're not so different.
10:09As we see with Barry and Rafe's relationship.
10:12Keep running that math to see if I don't come knock that J.Crew looking ass out.
10:21I need your help.

10:37Number 1. Kissing in the Rain.
10:39Yesterday, I didn't even know who you were.
10:43And today, I'm like...
10:47Sarah Cameron.
10:50And honestly, in my limited experience, that's rare.
10:52The episode in which John B and Sarah, also known as Vlad and Val, get together,
10:58is one of the most iconic ones to date.
11:00This is due in large part to their PDA in the pouring rain.
11:04Look, I can't pretend like this isn't real. Like, this didn't happen. I'm sorry. I just...
11:13When they were filming this, the crew expected to stop the scene during the downpour,
11:18but the actors and Pate saw it as an opportunity to do things notebook style in wet weather.
11:24It's the first smooch shared between the two on the show,
11:27and it even went on to win Best Kiss at the MTV Movie and TV Awards,
11:32so we think they made the right decision not to take a rain check.
11:35Um, I'm kind of panicking right now.
11:36Shut up.
11:44All right. Well, um, on that note...
11:48Yeah!
11:48Which OBX moment were you shocked to find out was not in the script? Let us know in the comments.
11:54Uh, caught me, sir, and they were about to take me away.
11:56And that's what you should do. Escort me out of here. You got me.
12:01Come on. All right. Fix that tie, son.
12:03Oh, you looking spiffy, too. You powerpuff girls have fun.
