00:00Serving as a protector of Earth for decades, and of Asgard for millennia,
00:04Thor has been in more battles than almost any superhero in Marvel.
00:08Most heroes would struggle to thwart a cosmic entity or an intergalactic empire,
00:12but for Thor, it's often mere sports.
00:15He may be the God of Thunder and the occasional All-Father of Asgard,
00:18but the Norse champion has come across enemies that were able to hold their own
00:22against the founding Avenger.
00:24Thor is tough, but he isn't quite unbeatable,
00:27even though he's taken down incredible enemies that might make it look like he is.
00:31With that in mind, I'm Will for What Culture,
00:33and here are the 10 Most Powerful Beings Thor Has Defeated.
00:3710. Apocalypse – Uncanny Avengers 6
00:40In 1013 AD, Apocalypse made his way to Scandinavia,
00:45after learning its people possessed a threat to his schemes.
00:48Thor happened to be nearby, and despite being completely wasted,
00:52challenged the demonic mutant, assuming he was just a mindless brute.
00:56Because this encounter took place before Thor was armed with Mjolnir,
00:59Apocalypse wiped the floor with the Viking God.
01:02When Thor realized his axe, Yarnborn, couldn't pierce his enemy's celestial hide,
01:07he fled back to Asgard.
01:09After seeking consultation, the Thunder God learned
01:11that he could place an enchantment on his weapon using his own blood
01:15to make it cut through anything.
01:16After doing so, he tracked down the celestial-powered mutant
01:20and demanded a rematch.
01:21This time, Thor's axe cut through his rival's chest with ease,
01:25left with no choice.
01:27Apocalypse reluctantly retreated.
01:299. Boar – Thor 600
01:32Centuries ago, Loki had Thor's grandfather Boar turned into snow,
01:37apparently killing him.
01:38Classic Loki, am I right?
01:40Then, in the modern era, Loki decided to discredit Thor
01:42by having him murder his own grandfather in front of the other Asgardians.
01:47He uses his dark magic to revive Boar and forced him to see everyone as a threat.
01:52After he unleashed his fury upon New York, Thor stepped in to take him down,
01:56unaware that this enemy was of his own blood.
01:59Boar proved to be one of Thor's greatest adversaries,
02:02since he could wheel and hurl Mjolnir with ease.
02:05In the final moments of the battle, Thor struck Boar with so much force,
02:09a chunk of Mjolnir cracked off.
02:11It was only after the fight that Thor realized he was battling his grandfather.
02:15Sadly, the impact of Mjolnir was too great and Boar perished.
02:198. Hela – Thor 361
02:22Thor may be Asgard's champion, but his power pales in comparison to Hela.
02:26Not only does the Goddess of Death usually defeat the hammer-hurling avenger with little effort,
02:31but she has actually killed him in the past as well.
02:33Even though Thor knows this, he still challenged the Mistress of Death to combat
02:37when his friend's souls were trapped in Hell.
02:39Unsurprisingly, Hela maintained the upper hand for the majority of the fight
02:42and managed to slash Thor's face to pieces.
02:45When Thor pulled off her robe, however, he learned that it served as a conduit for her sorcery,
02:50meaning that she was literally powerless without it.
02:53Unable to overpower Thor without her enchanted cloak,
02:56she admitted defeat and freed his friends.
02:58Turns out it's just that easy.
03:007. Surtur – Mighty Thor 21
03:04Surtur the Fire Giant has served as the ruler of the fiery realm of Muspelheim for eons.
03:09When the Fire God declared war on the Nine Realms,
03:12Thor vowed to put a stop to his tyranny once and for all.
03:15Fusing the indestructible twilight sword with Mjolnir,
03:18the Storm God impaled Surtur through the neck, killing him.
03:21Although comic book villains have a tendency to resurrect themselves every fortnight or so,
03:26Surtur has been dead and buried for eight years,
03:28and thus has been perceived as one of Thor's greatest lasting triumphs.
03:326. The Midgard Serpent – Thor 360
03:36In Norse mythology, Thor's most defining moment is when he died,
03:40defeating Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent,
03:42an otherworldly reptile so large its body wrapped around the entire planet.
03:47In the comics, the serpent exists in an ethereal version of Earth,
03:50because, well, if it didn't, it would crush everything in the world in like two seconds.
03:54But when this colossal creature partially materialised on the physical plane
03:58to challenge Thor to a duel, Asgard's champion had no choice,
04:02knowing the serpent was destined to destroy Midgard.
04:05Even though Thor knew that he was destined to fall at the hands of the snake,
04:09he went for it anyway.
04:10Despite the fact he was seemingly poisoned to death by the serpent's venom in the final pages,
04:15we all know that heroes never stay dead for long.
04:185. Gorr – Thor God of Thunder 11
04:21Centuries ago, an alien called Gorr lost his faith in the gods after his family were killed.
04:26After stumbling upon a god-slaying weapon called the Necrosword,
04:29Gorr vowed to wipe out every deity in existence for failing to save his family.
04:34For over a thousand years, Gorr the God Butcher travelled the cosmos,
04:38exterminating entire pantheons.
04:40Every time he executed a god, he absorbed their essence,
04:44magnifying his strength to an incalculable level.
04:47In fact, he's so powerful, Thor teamed up with two time-displaced versions of himself
04:52to fight Gorr, and still lost.
04:54The superhero eventually learned that Gorr was building a god-bomb
04:58that, once decimated, would kill every god in the time stream.
05:01Since Thor knew he couldn't beat the God Butcher in combat, he tried a different tactic.
05:06Because Thor is a god, he is powered by the beliefs of his followers.
05:09At least, at this point in the comics, that's how it works.
05:12As the gods throughout space and time empowered Thor with their prayers,
05:15he absorbed the god-bomb into himself before expunging it.
05:18He then used the Necrosword to decapitate Gorr,
05:21before having his remains hurled into the nearest black hole.
05:244. The Demogorg
05:26The Mighty Thor 8-9
05:28When Thor was murdered by his evil uncle, Cole Borson,
05:31a magical spell caused everyone in existence to forget he existed.
05:35Any god that is forgotten is transported to a realm outside time and space,
05:39where they're consumed by the Demogorg.
05:42Despite his best efforts to avoid this fate, Thor was devoured by the ungodly behemoth.
05:47Luckily, it takes a little more than killing Thor and eating him to put him down for good.
05:51Once in the creature's gut, he raised an army of other deceased gods,
05:55attacked the creature's heart and made it explode.
05:57He then returned to Earth and life via a convenient portal.
06:013. Exetar
06:02Uncanny Avengers 21
06:04Even though Thor has encountered his fair share of cosmic entities,
06:07he was gobsmacked when he laid eyes on Exetar, the Celestial Executioner,
06:11a being so vast his upper body surpassed the clouds.
06:15Thor knew he was outmatched, but fought the cosmic colossus head-on,
06:18managing to breach his shell and decimate his brain casing.
06:21Although this left Exetar injured,
06:23Mjolnir was shattered and the gigantic exterminator was far from defeated.
06:28When Exetar was sent to vanquish Earth, it was Thor's chance to have a rematch.
06:32After Rogue absorbed the powers of almost every superhero on Earth,
06:35she staggered Exetar long enough for the God of Thunder to slay it with his axe, Yarnborn.
06:402. Mangog
06:41The Mighty Thor 705
06:43Mangog is basically the culmination of a quadrillion beings Odin killed
06:48because they were all evil and going to wipe out the universe.
06:50He is one of the strongest entities in existence and is super pissed off at the Asgardians.
06:56Even Thor and Odin together proved powerless to stop Mangog.
06:59After shattering the Bifrost and destroying most of Asgardia,
07:03Jane Foster, better known as the Mighty Thor,
07:05hurled the demonic entity into the bowels of the sun.
07:08When she realised that the star's intense heat wasn't enough to kill the beast,
07:12she wrapped it in the chains forged to bind the Fenris Wolf,
07:15and then tied it to Mjolnir, sealing Mangog forever in the core of the sun.
07:201. Galactus and the Black Winter
07:23Thor 1-6
07:24Shortly after Thor became the All-Father,
07:27a heavily injured Galactus visited Asgard, pleading for his help.
07:31The World Eater explained that the entity that destroyed his old reality,
07:34the Black Winter, had returned to consume all life in the cosmos.
07:39Knowing he was powerless to defeat this being in his current state,
07:42Galactus endowed Thor with the power cosmic,
07:44transforming him into the Herald of Thunder.
07:47Despite his god-like power, Galactus was unable to kill the Black Winter.
07:51When Thor encountered the celestial being,
07:53it revealed that the reason it spared Galactus in the previous universe
07:56was so that he could serve as his herald in this one.
07:59Upon this revelation, Thor obliterated Galactus then and there.
08:03He then converted his energy into a cosmic bomb,
08:06which he used to vanquish the Black Winter once and for all.
08:10And there you have it, folks, the ten most powerful beings Thor has defeated.
