Celtics insider Mego joins! What happened with the Celtics last night against the Hawks? Can they rebound tonight against the Nets? Are you worried?
Transcript
00:00Sorry, go ahead.
00:01What is your issue with my overexcitement about the Red Sox being all-in on Juan Soto?
00:06Yeah, I wish I could be with you on this one, Greg, but I honestly don't think that the
00:12Red Sox, A, will do that, and I don't think that would be a good situation, a good contract
00:17situation for them.
00:18I kind of take the opposite side.
00:19I'd rather have them make three or four big moves in free agency to upgrade their team
00:26rather than throw all the eggs in one basket, because I have a feeling that's where the
00:30Red Sox are.
00:32I have moves that I'd like them to make rather than Juan Soto, and I can understand that
00:37he's an awesome player, he's a Hall of Fame-level player, but they're going to have to sign
00:43him to 14 years at $50 million annual average value.
00:51It's going to be something insane.
00:52They have the money.
00:54That's the way they used to do business.
00:57They're still paying Manny Ramirez.
00:59That's the way they used to do business here.
01:03I do agree with you, but when they had Manny Ramirez, they didn't have a collective bargaining
01:08tax, and John Henry wasn't on the committee, the reform committee, like Curtis refers to.
01:15They don't do that.
01:17They had to get pressured into the Devers contract.
01:19They gave away bets because of that situation.
01:22I don't think they're going to do it.
01:24I'd rather have them make four or five moves, spend.
01:26They have $65 million against the CBT, I'd rather have them spend.
01:29I have three or four things that I'd love them to do rather than that.
01:33I just don't think that they act that way anymore.
01:37So like Max Fried or like Blake Snell, something like that.
01:41Yeah, I think they need to do, and the other thing about Soto, Greg, that you need to understand
01:46is that the Otani thing, think about the off-the-field revenue that came with the Otani deal, right?
01:54Juan Soto doesn't have that.
01:56So if you're talking about signing Otani, the Dodgers made all of that back because
02:02Curtis was talking about the revenue from Japan, the ratings in Japan, they got all
02:07of that back, right, from that Otani.
02:09Juan Soto just doesn't have that.
02:12He doesn't bring that marketing side of things that the Red Sox can capitalize on.
02:17And Brett's right about that.
02:20Brett, you're right about this.
02:21If there was ever a deal that made sense for this ownership group, it was Shohei.
02:25Wiggy was right.
02:26They just were wusses about it.
02:28You get no upfront cost.
02:31You get the huge bang for your Fenway Sports Group buck where you have one of the big stars
02:36in all of sports.
02:37You bring in the entire market with Japan.
02:39It's basically Dice K, but with a great player, not just someone who brings a market.
02:45And this ownership wouldn't be on the hook to pay him because of the deferment and the
02:49money.
02:50And Soto is not going to take the deferment.
02:52Right.
02:52So Juan Soto is going to want his money.
02:54I think Juan Soto is going to want a majority of that money up front.
02:58So he's the best hitter in Major League Baseball.
03:02Like, how do you not want that guy on your team?
03:05Whatever it costs.
03:05I didn't say that.
03:06I didn't say that.
03:07I didn't want him.
03:08I just don't think the Red Sox are wired that way anymore.
03:11Right.
03:11I don't think they're going to pay $50 million for one player for 14 years.
03:17Why are they bothering to fly out there then this week?
03:20I think they want to be in the mix.
03:23And I think they want to present themselves as being a true player.
03:28But I think when it comes down to it, I just think Steve Cohen's going to overpay.
03:33But Brett, for the fans...
03:34I think Steve Cohen's going to come in at the end.
03:36From the fan perspective, aren't we sick and tired of them being in it?
03:41Like, I can't listen to another report of they were in it, but then they just lost out.
03:47Yeah, I think you're right.
03:48But I think, Courtney, I think what fans want, I think the fans want a winner.
03:53Right.
03:53Like, I think the fans, they've built themselves a really, really good solid foundation.
03:59And now it's time to go.
04:00Now it's time to sign.
04:02If they were to trade for what I think is the top trade target on the market, which is Garrett
04:08Crochet, if they trade for Garrett Crochet, it's going to cost you a Marcelo Meyer, a
04:14William Abreu, it's going to cost you probably both of those guys to get Garrett Crochet.
04:18He is a fantastic pitcher.
04:21And then you go out and you sign a top free agent pitcher, you're putting yourself in
04:26position to make the playoffs and potentially be a World Series finalist.
04:32That's those two moves right there.
04:34The pitching side of things, in my opinion, make the Red Sox a really, really viable candidate
04:41to make a strong push.
04:42And that's what fans want.
04:44Fans want sustained success.
04:47So if you can do it and if you can sign two pitchers or trade for a pitcher and sign a
04:50pitcher, plus you have the young nucleus that they're coming up.
04:54I think that's what, at the end of the day, Coco, fans want winners.
04:57So you want, right.
04:58And if they can see.
05:00Yeah, I was going to say, so you want like a guy like, uh, uh, what's the Kurt Kurban
05:05Barnes, uh, Burns.
05:06Is that his name?
05:08Yeah, he's awesome.
05:09Aren't you going to have to pay?
05:10Aren't you going to have to give him like a seven year, you know, $170 million deal?
05:17Yeah, I think he's going to take about seven to two 10 and I don't want Corbin Burns.
05:21I think he's, he's, he's 30 years old and I think it's bad business paying pitchers
05:26that are 29, 30 for seven or eight year deals.
05:29I think it's just bad business.
05:31So that's why I, I put all my focus on the Garrett crochet who's 26 years old.
05:37He's got two years of team control left.
05:40And you, you sign him to a contract that is a little bit team control, but it's going
05:45to be a big contract, right?
05:47He's going to, he's going to take a lot of money, but he's 26.
05:50And that's the alluring thing about Juan Soto that I think people are, are loving.
05:55He's like 25, 26, right?
05:57So you'll have him.
05:58If you're talking about a 14 year deal and he's 25 years old, you're going to have him
06:02until 40.
06:03So I just, I don't think signing Corbin Burns, who's going to be a $200 million player.
06:09I don't think it's good business signing a 30 year old pitcher who's his, some of his
06:14numbers were starting to decrease this year.
06:16That's just what happens with, with older starting pitchers.
06:19So I Courtney, I think at the end of the day, I think Red Sox fans want winners.
06:25And I think one of the cool things about the Celtics right now is that you can see, you
06:30can see kind of a younger core of players that are together, right?
06:34And you can kind of build around that.
06:36And I think that's what the Red Sox are trying to do with, with these young prospects.
06:41Now, I just think it's time to supplement those young guys by, by adding two or three
06:45really, really quality high end starting pitchers.
06:48And I think you're going to put yourself right in the mix for five or six years.
06:51Speaker 3 Thanks for the buzz kill.
06:52Baseball, Brett, baseball, call you buzz, kill Brett.
06:57Like the Red Sox love to get young players and build them up and then send them off.
07:02That's what they like to do.
07:03Speaker 2 Wow.
07:05We got a new regime here.
07:06And tell Shyam I still haven't forgot about the bet.
07:09Speaker 3 Yeah, that's right.
07:10Speaker 1 Oh, I'm happy to pay up whenever I, whenever I'm asked.
07:13Speaker 3 Yeah.
07:13All right.
07:13There's baseball, Brett.
07:14Speaker 3 I feel like, wait, Courtney, what did you say the Red Sox like to do?
07:17Speaker 1 They like to build up young players and then sell them off.
07:20Speaker 3 I can't believe that Greg hates their business model.
07:26He is.
07:27Speaker 1 I just feel like what baseball, Brett saying, like, I get what you're saying,
07:31save that money.
07:32But if you want a veteran pitcher that he's talking about, a veteran, an elite pitcher,
07:37they're all going to be like twenty nine, thirty years old.
07:39And they're all I mean, what did Garrett Cole just sign for three years and 144 million?
07:44Isn't he?
07:44How old is he?
07:44Like thirty seven.
07:46So I feel like you're going to have to pay that guy have the money to do both.
07:50Speaker 3 Right.
07:51I mean, I like I why are we acting like they don't have money over there?
07:56Yeah, I don't really know.
07:57Speaker 1 It's really frustrating because I recognize like people that know like Brett,
08:03that's a big fan that follows this.
08:05I understand it's not an explanation, but I feel like there's a lot of people like me
08:10that are just resigned to who they are.
08:12And maybe if we were outraged to do better for the fan base that they the team may be
08:16forced to doing something.
08:18But I've just been so beaten down by the fact that they're just not going to change.
08:21I that's I feel like they might be feeling the heat.
08:25Yeah, I'm with you on that.
08:27Like, I feel like this season, maybe for once, that fans didn't just show up at the ballpark
08:34because it's friendly Fenway, John.
08:36Hey, anybody, they want to make a splash.
08:41So and and you're kind of locked in a little bit, maybe with an advantage.
08:47If indeed the Red Sox were have been Juan Soto's favorite team since he was a kid and
08:53he loved David Ortiz, like you don't buy that for a second.
08:59You hire Scott Boris to get the last dollar and God love America for it.
09:03But he's not going to sign here because Big Poppy played here.
09:06And then you say that apparently Bradfoe is reporting that David Ortiz is not going to
09:13the Juan Soto meeting this time.
09:15I mean, he got a cell phone.
09:16All I got to do is call him and talk to him.
09:18FaceTime is OK.
09:19Yeah, FaceTime is fine.
09:21But didn't everybody say, like, you look at the Dodgers, you look at the Yankees, like
09:25you have to.
09:26The Yankees pay Garrett Cole and Aaron Judge.
09:29Right.
09:29Why can't you do that?
09:30So so you have to like, why not?
09:33Yeah, I agree with you.
09:34Like, I'm with you.
09:35I think that their feet are being held to the fire in the sense for the past couple of years
09:39they haven't done anything.
09:40So now they have to make a real, real splash where fans are like fans are excited when
09:48spring training rolls around because you actually the dubs in the Twitch chat says Fenway was
09:53still selling out.
09:54So what is the quote unquote heat that they've been feeling?
09:57Fenway was not selling out all this season.
09:59Like, that's not true.
10:01I was there.
10:03It was not.
10:05And so I you can argue that all you want.
10:08Yes, the fans, there have been a considerable amount of fans who have remained loyal and
10:13like to go to the ballpark because it's July and it's a Wednesday night.
10:18That's always going to be true.
10:20But it's not.
10:20They have got to be feeling some pressure.
10:24Right.
10:24When it comes to to revenue and to into interest.
10:28Like, I mean, I.
10:29And Juan Soto helps you with that.
10:30The interest level of signing a guy like Juan Soto completely.
10:34It immediately changes the narrative.
10:37And it shows that you're serious about saying that you're going to spend your you're ready
10:41to to bring this team back to greatness.
10:43Like it gives it gives fans that hope again.
10:46I want to know where the money from the concerts at Fenway Park goes.
10:50Is that a totally separate, you know, account?
10:53Because I don't want to hear about their revenue being down.
10:55When you have Post Malone, you have concert after concert banged out there.
11:01They have plenty of cash.
11:03Oh, they got cash.
11:04I don't think anybody thinks.
11:05I mean, they might say that otherwise, but we know that they got plenty of cash.
11:10And then what it does for your organization fan interest.
11:14But it also makes your team better.
11:15If you're talking about you need somebody to protect Rafi Devers or help out Rafi Devers,
11:21you add a guy like Soto to your lineup.
11:23I mean, now now you got a really, really strong, you know, third and fourth,
11:29you know, third and fourth hitter.
11:32I mean, at some point you have to look around the market alone
11:36and say the attention is clearly on the Celtics, right?
11:40Yes.
11:42The Patriots are.
11:44I mean, they have Drake May and they have a future.
11:47Yeah, they're in the back.
11:50You're behind.
11:50I think if you're looking at next season, season after you're behind the two of them.
11:56Yeah, right now, right now it's all that comes to interest.
12:00Right. But that's why I said what the Celtics, excuse me, the Patriots and Red Sox.
12:05It's all about who makes the biggest offseason splash.
12:08And that's why the offseason is going to be critical for both of them.
12:11The the the Drake May, we love that.
12:15But if the offseason splash in for the Patriots is not big now,
12:20like, well, are you going to get this guy help?
12:22Same with the Red Sox, like the offseason splash.
12:26Alex Corr did not re up for three more years to just manage a team that is,
12:32you know, a bunch of young guys that's going to take a rebuild.
12:35And I finally found some info on this from it was from October 4th.
12:39John Tomasi, NBC Sports Boston noted that the Boston Red Sox Nessun TV ratings were down
12:4725 percent in the 25 to 54 demographic this season off of the 2023 season, which was down
12:54and attendance was down about 12000 a game.
12:58So, yeah, there's no interest.
12:59That's from his story.
13:01We need a slogan when you're trying to get to accomplish something like this.
13:05You always need a slogan.
13:06You get Juan Soto way back.
13:08Juan Nation.
13:09All right.
13:09I like that one.
13:10We are the Red Sox fans are one nation on the one nation.
13:14Yeah.
13:15Under Henry.
13:18One, one, one nation under under John.
13:21There you go.
13:22What it would be.
13:23I would say, Linda, but maybe.
