00:00So I'm Thea Osantic and I'm Chief Executive Officer at Motivate.
00:04I'm Tiffany Crockel and I'm one of the addiction professionals and support workers at Motivate.
00:09And when is the workshop being held?
00:11That's on the 28th of November, it's a Thursday.
00:14And then with the family and friends workshop, so Tiffany you mentioned how
00:19you have done something like it in the past but what is this one specifically going to be like?
00:24So this is a new idea for us, we've never done a full workshop day.
00:30So the day will be from half past nine till three o'clock,
00:33so that allows parents to come within the school hours.
00:37It's a very very different concept to what we've done in the past where it's been
00:41hourly sessions with people coming and learning about different tools and skills to
00:47work with somebody with addiction within the household.
00:50And this is very much a full day of focusing entirely on the family and friends who are
00:57impacted and perhaps exploring new ways of looking at their situation.
01:04So throughout the workshop, throughout the day, what can they expect?
01:11We're looking forward to doing an icebreaker to begin with to introduce everybody to one another
01:16and then we'll swiftly go into quite a detailed
01:22presentation on what we cover throughout the whole series.
01:27But it gives them an idea of what areas we focus on,
01:31give them new tools, we do have worksheets that we could work through.
01:35It's going to be very much led by the people that attend and their particular situations.
01:41What feedback have you guys been given from people who have attended?
01:45It's all been very very positive.
01:48They tend to then come for one-to-ones after the workshops because they feel that the support
01:54is necessary and they realise that actually they are just as important as the person using
01:59the substance use.
02:00Initially it can be quite scary, the idea of them actually having to make changes themselves
02:07because a lot of the time when we see a bad behaviour in the home, it is the person who's
02:12creating the bad behaviour that needs to change.
02:14But actually sometimes our approaches and the way we're doing it can be enabling the
02:20behaviour to continue.
02:21So it's about taking a step back and look at it from a different perspective.
02:25And how do people go about signing up to come?
02:30They can email or telephone Motivate.
02:33There is a post on our Facebook page where they can get the details there as well.
02:39The email address for Motivate is contact at Motivate, that's M-O-T-I-V number eight
02:46or the free phone number is 0808 1624 627.
02:53All the groups that are held at Motivate, and there's a lot of groups at Motivate now,
02:56it's one of the biggest things that we do here now, are all held under confidential
03:02rules.
03:03So you can walk through the door and feel very reassured that what happens in the room
03:09stays in the room.
03:11Quite often people who are struggling, living with somebody who has an addictive behaviour,
03:19the family members themselves just feel like that's the person that needs to get the help,
03:24not me, it's them, why can't you help them?
03:27And it's to take that step back and to realise that actually they also need help themselves.
03:32They estimate for every person who has an issue there are a minimum of four other people
03:38who are affected by that, and so if you think about the population of the Isle of Man,
03:43you know you're going to have about, at this very moment in time, about 25% of the population
03:48is concerned about somebody that they know who's got an issue.
03:52So this is a really important issue that we offer support to family members,
03:57not just to the people themselves who have issues but also to them as well.
