00:00Let's meet the award-winning artist and illustrator behind the famous children's books.
00:05But before that, let's all watch this.
00:09One hundred percent dedication,
00:11passion and imagination.
00:14That's what the illustrator and multi-awarded artist, Beth Parocha,
00:18combines in each line and stroke that she paints on the pages of children's books.
00:24Her works are not just designs.
00:27It's a painting that draws emotion,
00:30tells a story,
00:32and gives life to words for children.
00:36And as an illustrator,
00:38there are now more than 50 children's books,
00:40the most famous books
00:42loved by every generation of Filipino children
00:45and have received various awards.
00:48Some of them are Tiny Feet, Tiny Shoes,
00:51Bulul, and Ako Ay May Kiki.
00:54Let's meet the multi-awarded artist, Beth Parocha,
00:58here on She Shines.
01:03And now, we're joined live by Beth Parocha.
01:08Good morning and welcome to Rise Up 2019.
01:11Good morning.
01:13The children's books are so beautiful.
01:15And there are so many.
01:16It's true.
01:17In fact, there are around 50 books.
01:19No, actually, I'm just saying that there are usually 50.
01:23Because I'm too lazy to count.
01:25But recently, someone counted for me.
01:28It's around 115.
01:30Wow!
01:31More than 100.
01:33Now, we've documented everything.
01:37Alright, let's talk about your story and your journey.
01:40How did you start in the field of illustration?
01:43And why did you choose to focus on children's books?
01:46I was still young.
01:48I was already fond of drawing.
01:50When I was in Grade 4, I was already working on a small book
01:54made from band paper, and I stapled it.
01:59So, when I was in college,
02:03I was thinking about what course would be good for me.
02:09In our school,
02:10in the test, the career test,
02:12I got an engineering degree.
02:15Oh, okay!
02:16Okay, but I thought that I wasn't good at math.
02:20So, actually, I'm not that good at math.
02:25The course I chose was the one without math.
02:29But there wasn't a course like that in the school I wanted to go to,
02:33which is UP.
02:35So, there was only PT and Fine Arts.
02:40Math was the only course available.
02:42So, between PT and Fine Arts,
02:45I chose Fine Arts because I was good at physical therapy.
02:48Okay, in UP, right?
02:50Yes, in Fine Arts.
02:51That's also a passion of yours, Ms. Beth.
02:53Look at that, almost 100 illustrations.
02:57It's a nostalgia.
02:58You know, growing up,
03:00you read books with this.
03:03I remember that I really wanted to see the illustrations,
03:08the pictures, right?
03:10And also, Ma'am Beth,
03:12we heard that you are also a founding member of Ilustrador ng Kabataan.
03:16How do you see this organization
03:19as a way to help young people
03:22who also want to follow this path?
03:27So, we started because we're just a handful of illustrators.
03:32So, we thought through a workshop by the Goethe-Institut
03:37that since we were already together at that point,
03:43we should organize a group
03:46where we can encourage artists like us
03:52to plunge into the world of children's picture books.
03:57And to have the right contract,
04:01the right talent.
04:02Oh, that's right.
04:04Of course, if the bookmakers and book creators are happy,
04:09the work will be better.
04:11The work will be better.
04:12The picture books themselves will be given more importance
04:19because they cater to our stakeholders,
04:21which are the kids, the children.
04:24So, it's a cycle.
04:26And if the system is good,
04:28of course, there will be more illustrators
04:31who will be able to go into this realm of the picture books.
04:36How big is your organization?
04:39How many members do you have?
04:41We started out with around 20 plus, 23.
04:45Now, we have more than a hundred.
04:48But not all of them are active.
04:52But the active ones are around 50.
04:55Alright.
04:56In your works, how do you show the culture and tradition of the Filipinos?
05:03Do you also inject some elements of being a Filipino
05:06if this is also part of the story, Ms. Beth?
05:08Of course.
05:10Actually, this is Bulul.
05:13Yes.
05:14Yes, there it is.
05:15Bulul.
05:16And I think this one, Koay My Kiki.
05:19That's enough.
05:21There you go.
05:22Okay.
05:23Can you tell us more about that?
05:26Bulul.
05:28Bulul is one of our indigenous carvings in the north.
05:35It's the rice god.
05:37Okay.
05:38So, like this one, it's a story of how a...
05:44Oh, that's so nice.
05:48How a child was blessed by a grandfather who knew how to carve.
05:57Okay.
05:58And the bad luck that died during the pandemic.
06:03But then, he carried on the tradition.
06:07Okay.
06:07So, through the story itself, you can see our culture in the north, right?
06:19So, there you go.
06:21How about this one, Koay My Kiki?
06:23The title is very interesting.
06:25I want to read it later.
06:27Actually, there's a story behind this.
06:29This is also Koay My Titi.
06:31Oh, is that so?
06:32Okay.
06:33Wait, this one...
06:35I'm sorry.
06:36There you go.
06:39That is the Italian version.
06:42Oh, okay.
06:43There's another one?
06:44This is the Tagalog.
06:45Oh, right.
06:46Filipino English.
06:49Okay.
06:50Can you tell us more about that?
06:52Yes.
06:53I think the next one will be in Bahasa.
07:01So, anyway, this was the first project I was offered.
07:07There's another one.
07:09The male version.
07:10This one, right?
07:11Yes.
07:12When I was first offered this project,
07:15there were people who told me not to accept it
07:18because it's very controversial.
07:21And the parents might not accept it.
07:25But I said,
07:28basically, I chose to do this because I'm also a parent.
07:34And of course, I don't want to put my children in danger.
07:39I don't want to put my children's guardians in danger.
07:44So I said, I think,
07:49I chose this so that there won't be any mistakes.
07:52Because usually, when this happens,
07:56the thinking becomes malicious
07:59because it's not usually said or shown.
08:03Yes.
08:04Yes.
08:05Actually, in America,
08:07it's not shown on the front cover,
08:10the titi of a boy.
08:15Yes.
08:16So, it's our first time here in the Philippines.
08:19Which I commend, ma'am.
08:20You know, what I've learned from psychology development,
08:24when you're still young,
08:26the children should be aware of what they have
08:29so that they can embrace it.
08:31Because in the middle age,
08:32that's where the identity crisis happens.
08:35So I think, having these children's books
08:38to be aware, to embrace the children,
08:41the children at a very young age.
08:44Yes.
08:45There's an interesting thing about this
08:47because at first, they were told not to accept it.
08:52Now, believe it or not,
08:54DEPED purchased it
08:58to be a supplementary material
09:02for sex education
09:05for elementary kids.
09:07Okay?
09:08Because, like this,
09:11it's about how a girl takes care of her husband
09:18so that her mother can't see
09:22that she's the only one who can earn this.
09:25She can hold it.
09:26Okay.
09:27Okay?
09:28So, a lot of mothers tell me
09:31that ever since they introduced this to their kids,
09:36especially the female ones,
09:39the children are able to sit properly.
09:42That's good.
09:43Yes.
09:44Unlike before, when they sat side by side,
09:46they realized that,
09:48hey, this is one thing
09:50that only my mother or my grandmother
09:55can hold or see.
10:00Like me, I have an aunt.
10:03This is one of the ways
10:08that a young man should clean his aunt well
10:15because it can be an infection
10:23if he doesn't clean it properly.
10:27So, it's very informative,
10:30very educational.
10:32Yes.
10:33You can't say that it's lousy or anything.
10:38Yes.
10:39It can help the kids,
10:41and even the parents.
10:42Also, it's not good for a young girl like Kiki
10:46to say different terminologies
10:50like flower or cookie or something.
10:54Yes.
10:55Because there are cases where
10:57this guy ate my cookie or something or whatever
11:02that the teacher thought was really a cookie.
11:07Ah, okay.
11:08There was a miscommunication.
11:10Yes.
11:11So, you should use the right term.
11:13Yes.
11:14In the UP dictionary,
11:17Kiki and Titi are really there.
11:21So, it's really an accepted term.
11:24Yes.
11:25All right.
11:26To the aspiring kids
11:28who want to be an illustrator like you,
11:32what are the pieces of advice
11:34that you want to tell them?
11:37It's good,
11:39and if you like it,
11:43it's good that you enter this world.
11:46Because for me,
11:49even at my age,
11:51it's really exciting to play in the world of picture books.
11:56Because you're forever young.
11:58You're dealing with stories for the young.
12:03And so,
12:04your mind is still young.
12:08And of course,
12:09because of those events,
12:15your mind becomes fresh
12:18and your feelings become young.
12:21All right.
12:22Ma'am, lastly,
12:23where can they follow you?
12:25Do you have a social media account?
12:27Or your group's website?
12:30Where can they contact you?
12:31For updates,
12:32where can they get books?
12:33Maybe there are writers
12:34who want to collaborate with you.
12:36Yes.
12:37The illustrator of the young
12:39has their own website.
12:40They can always search for it online.
12:43And for me,
12:45they can follow me through Instagram.
12:48Just look for Beth Parocha.
12:50All right.
12:51Thank you, Ms. Beth.
12:52Thank you very much, Ms. Beth Parocha, once again.
12:54A multi-awarded illustrator.
12:56Thank you for giving us your time this morning.
