00:00At the time, nobody knew it was Steve Jobs' last public appearance.
00:05He spoke in front of the Cupertino City Council just four months before he passed away.
00:11And there, he presented the new Apple Park campus project.
00:15Now, back in the 90s, Apple built its first campus and called it Infinite Loop.
00:21The entire place was set up in a ring around a looped road, named after the programming
00:26thing where a code runs on repeat forever.
00:29Cool, huh?
00:30Anyway, it was fine for a while.
00:32But as Apple kept growing, they simply ran out of room.
00:36So they began grabbing more buildings around the area.
00:39Eventually, it turned into this messy setup of mismatched offices that didn't work together
00:44at all.
00:46Instead of ditching Infinite Loop, Apple decided to keep it and build a huge modern campus
00:51nearby.
00:52They got lucky with a giant plot of land right next to Interstate 280.
00:57This highway cuts through Silicon Valley, so it would be super easy for people to get
01:01to work.
01:02That land once belonged to Hewlett-Packard.
01:05But since his company was downsizing, they decided to sell, and Apple jumped on it.
01:11Interestingly, Jobs worked at Hewlett-Packard as a teenager, which made the land acquisition
01:16personally significant for him.
01:19To create their dream campus, Apple brought in a big-name architect, Norman Foster, and
01:25his design studio.
01:27The idea was to make one giant building big enough to fit 12,000 people.
01:32That's why the main building of the campus is a massive ring with a focus on collaboration.
01:38The creators wanted to ensure that workers from different departments could meet frequently
01:42in shared spaces.
01:44A major feature of the building is the use of giant curved glass panels.
01:49They provide awesome panoramic views and an overall sense of openness.
01:55The ring-shaped building is surrounded by tons of parkland.
01:59Inside it's divided into 9 sections, connected by bright open atriums.
02:04And it's all wrapped in a continuous wall of floor-to-ceiling glass, so you get a full
02:09view of the green space outside from anywhere inside the ring.
02:14The setup inside is also different.
02:16It's one huge open space where people can sit wherever they want, like in a co-working
02:22space or on a college campus.
02:24The whole idea is to get people to work together more easily.
02:28Surprisingly, or not, after all, introverts do exist, not everyone is on board with this
02:34open layout.
02:36Some Apple employees, especially programmers, say it's actually hard to concentrate with
02:40all the open space and noise.
02:44Even though that massive circular building is incredible, it still doesn't have enough
02:48room for everyone at Apple.
02:51So they've been adding extra buildings nearby.
02:54But the new ones aren't as crazy cool in design as the main building.
02:58To keep things running smoothly, Apple also set up a private shuttle system to get employees
03:03through the traffic-heavy streets of Silicon Valley.
03:07Apple Park wasn't simply expensive to build.
03:10It was next-level expensive, reportedly costing around $5 billion in total.
03:16When you break that down, it comes out to about $1,785 per square foot, or a surprising
03:23$12.40 per square inch.
03:26That's because almost everything in Apple Park was custom-made and thoroughly designed.
03:32How about we take a closer look at what went into some of the major structures?
03:37The main building, also known as the Spaceship, is the heart of Apple Park, and the most recognizable
03:43construction.
03:44The main ring-shaped structure is huge, measuring a full mile in circumference.
03:50The building itself is famous for its over 3,000 custom-made curved glass panels, which
03:56form the continuous glass walls.
03:58And here's how much all that beauty cost Apple.
04:02Then there's Steve Jobs Theater.
04:04This venue is a special addition to the campus, created in memory of Apple's founder Steve
04:09Jobs.
04:10It spans 160,000 square feet and seats up to 1,000 people.
04:16This makes it perfect for Apple's famous product launches and other events.
04:20The theater's lobby alone cost about $12 million to build.
04:25Architect Norman Foster designed it so that only the elegant all-glass lobby is visible
04:30from the outside.
04:32This pavilion is supported entirely by glass, with no columns, which makes it the largest
04:37structure in the world to be fully supported by glass.
04:41The architect wanted the construction to look like a jewel nestled in the park.
04:46The entire theater sits underground and opens into a stunning 20-foot-tall glass cylinder.
04:53The cylinder is capped by one of the world's largest carbon-fiber roofs.
04:57And here's how much the entire theater cost.
05:01The visitor center at Apple Park was designed so that even the general public could get
05:06a small taste of the Apple Park experience.
05:09This building includes a guest reception area, a display zone where visitors can check out
05:14Apple's products, and a cafe.
05:17There's also an additional 2 million square feet of parking here, which cost around $26
05:23million to construct.
05:24Well, at least it ensures plenty of space for visitors.
05:28The visitor center even offers an exclusive Apple Store, with merchandise that's only
05:33available at this location.
05:35Along with an augmented reality tour of the campus.
05:39It's as cool as it sounds, and gives people a virtual look at what it's like inside
05:44Apple Park.
05:45The construction of the visitor center wasn't cheap either.
05:49Now Apple takes employee well-being seriously, and the campus includes a massive 100,000-square-foot
05:56fitness and wellness center with state-of-the-art facilities.
06:00This isn't just your basic gym.
06:02It's got multiple gyms, a two-story yoga studio, and even meditation rooms for mental
06:08wellness.
06:09There are also facilities for team sports, physical therapy spaces, and even on-site
06:14medical and dental services.
06:16It seems there's everything to make sure employees have the support they need to stay
06:20healthy and active.
06:22It all comes with a hefty price tag, though.
06:26Apple Park doesn't just look futuristic.
06:29It's also designed to be super eco-friendly.
06:32But before we dwell on that, let's take a look at Apple's giant data center in
06:37Reno, Nevada.
06:38This data center powers services like Siri, iCloud, Apple Music, and Apple Pay.
06:45The complex is made up of five huge white buildings, connected by a long central corridor
06:50and holds more than 200,000 servers.
06:53To keep everything running and cool, this data center is fully powered by 100% green
06:59energy from three Apple-owned solar farms.
07:03And it's not just the Reno data center.
07:06Apple has announced that all its facilities, from the Apple Park headquarters to its distribution
07:11centers and retail stores worldwide, now run on 100% renewable energy.
07:18Apple Park itself is part of this commitment.
07:2017 megawatts of solar panels cover its roof, making it one of the largest renewable energy
07:26installations of its kind globally.
07:29At the moment, this 100% green energy goal covers only Apple's direct operations and
07:35doesn't yet include its suppliers.
07:37But the company has already convinced a few dozen of its key suppliers to commit to using
07:43100% renewable energy for the parts of their business that serve Apple.
07:49Probably the coolest thing of them all is that Apple Park was engineered to handle California's
07:54earthquake risks.
07:56The building relies on a technology called base isolation.
08:00It essentially places the whole structure on 692 large steel saucers 2 stories underground.
08:08In the event of an earthquake, the saucers allow the building to slide up to 4 feet in
08:13any direction.
08:14So, the whole construction remains stable and protected.
08:18Its floating design helps the structure withstand even severe tremors, keeping everyone and
08:24everything inside safe.
08:27Now unlike campuses like Google's, Apple Park is actually closed to the public.
08:32Luckily, there's the visitor center we talked about.
08:35At the moment, it's likely the only way outsiders can experience the vibe of Apple Park without
08:41needing an employee badge.
08:44In every sense, Apple Park is much more than just an office space.
08:49Its unique design, cutting-edge technology, and commitment to sustainability reflect Apple's
08:55brand and values.
