00:45World leaders touched down in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the G20 summit, where member states
00:52are set to discuss economic cooperation and policies.
00:56They were met by Brazil's President Lula da Silva, who will hold bilateral meetings
01:01with many leading nations attending the summit.
01:05The group of 20 includes members of the G7, as well as countries of emerging economies
01:10who are expected to adopt a joint declaration at the end of the summit.
01:16The G20 leaders must lead, and G20 countries, by definition, have tremendous economic clout
01:25and they yield massive diplomatic leverage.
01:28They must use it to tackle key global problems.
01:32The Brazilian presidency laid out three priorities that need to be discussed – the fight against
01:37hunger, the transition to renewable energy, and the reform of international institutions.
01:44But this year's forum is expected to be overshadowed by two major wars between Ukraine and Russia
01:49and in the Middle East, as well as Donald Trump's recent US election victory.
02:00With the first week over and ministers arriving on Monday, COP29 in Baku enters its final
02:06phase.
02:07Dubbed the Finance Cop, it aims to agree on a new climate financing regime, as the current
02:14one expires next year.
02:16Now the new collective quantified goal aims for trillions, according to the UN's trade
02:22and development organisation.
02:26We made this study and we ran a model to try to establish a bracket for the new goal and
02:33we came out with this document that says that the goal should start from 1.1 trillion for
02:42next year.
02:43And it is more or less in the range of what has been discussed by other studies or proposed
02:51by other studies too.
02:53But experts say this will be a challenge to achieve.
02:59No I think that these are difficult discussions, let's not try to overshadow the difficulties
03:06that we are confronting.
03:08And obviously it's not only about the quantum, it's also about the responsibilities within
03:14the quantum, what will come from where and for what.
03:21Governments are negotiating the new agreement, but the private sector will play a key role
03:26in its implementation.
03:28Multilateral development banks like the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development play
03:33a key role between countries and companies.
03:38EU Vice-President Odile Renaud-Bassot told Euronews that alongside the financial goal,
03:43ambitious policies from countries at COP29 are crucial.
03:48Having a goal is not the only solution per se, so it's mean, but what is also very important
03:57is the commitments taken by all countries around the world about national determined
04:01contribution, how they will, what kind of objectives they set for themselves in terms
04:06of level of renewable, getting out of coal, getting out of gas and so forth.
04:10So the national objective each country sets for himself is very important also, because
04:17having money, if you don't have projects, will not deliver anything.
04:21The Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce emphasised the need for
04:25ambitious targets.
04:28We expect governments to lead on this, we expect governments to actually be seized with
04:33the same level of engagement and intensity as when the global financial crisis hit, and
04:38we expect action.
04:40At the end of this week, ministers face a critical moment.
04:44Will they agree on the new financing goal and announce ambitious policies and projects
04:50for their countries?
04:56Volodymyr Zelensky has spoken after a decision came from Washington giving permission for
05:01Ukraine to use U.S. missiles to strike targets deeper inside Russia.
05:06But despite Zelensky pleading for such permission for weeks, his response in his nightly video
05:11address was notably muted.
05:13Today, many in the media are saying that we have received permission for such actions,
05:20but strikes are not delivered in words, such things are not announced, the missiles will
05:28speak for themselves.
05:31The decision marks a major U.S. policy shift during Joe Biden's final weeks in the White
05:36House.
05:37Biden had been reluctant to grant Kiev permission to use U.S. weapons for anything other than
05:41defensive purposes.
05:43He feared doing so would be a major escalation that could draw the U.S. and other NATO members
05:48into direct conflict with Russia.
05:51The weapons are expected to be used in response to North Korea's decision to send as many
05:55as 12,000 troops to Russia.
05:58American and South Korean intelligence officials say North Korea has also provided Russia with
06:03significant amounts of munitions.
06:05President-elect Donald Trump has signaled that he could push Ukraine to agree to surrender
06:10some land seized by Russia to bring about an end to the conflict.
06:14Trump, who takes office in January, repeatedly criticized the amount of military aid Washington
06:19sent to Kiev and said he could end the war within a day.
06:27A flag for each fallen soldier.
06:30This makeshift memorial in Ukraine's capital, Kiev, marks 1,000 days since Russia's full-scale
06:36invasion.
06:38Many fighters were civilians who, when called upon, left their ordinary lives behind to
06:43fight for their country.
07:08The shrine was created by relatives of the fallen soldiers, driven by a deep need to
07:20honor them in the absence of an official government memorial.
07:25Sources show the first flags appeared on the lawn on the Independence Square in May of
07:30the war's first year.
07:32According to Western estimates, some 80,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in battle so
07:37far.
07:43Thousands of protesters have gathered in Bratislava to oppose the policies of Populist Prime Minister
07:48Robert Fico.
07:50The rally coincided with the 35th anniversary of the start of the Velvet Revolution that
07:55brought an end to communist rule in the former Czechoslovakia.
07:59The protest united opposition parties who all say Fico is a threat to democracy.
08:26Fico came to power last year and his government has pushed through a plan to overhaul public
08:31broadcasting, a move critics say would give the government full control of public television
08:35and radio.
08:37Moves to amend a penal code and eliminate a special anti-graft prosecutor has led opponents
08:42to worry that he's leading Slovakia down a more autocratic path.
08:47Fico ended his country's military aid for Ukraine, opposes EU sanctions on Russia and
08:52says he'll block Ukraine's bid to join NATO.
08:56The Velvet Revolution took place from the 17th to the 28th of November 1989, one of
09:01several anti-communism movements in Eastern Europe at the end of the 80s.
09:06Demonstrations and strikes against the one-party government of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia
09:11included people from across the civilian spectrum.
09:14The result was the end of 41 years of one-party rule in the country, the dismantling of the
09:19centrally planned economy and the transition to a parliamentary democracy.
09:27Russia's exiled anti-war opposition has so far largely failed to speak with one voice
09:32and present a clear plan of action.
09:34But it was a different scene on Sunday in central Berlin.
09:38Prominent Russian opposition figures led a march of at least a thousand people against
09:43the war in Ukraine and calling for democracy in the motherland.
09:47Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Alexei Navalny, as well as Ilya Yashin and Vladimir Karamurza
09:53were among the protesters.
09:56Their demands were highly optimistic, but clear.
10:00Immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, trial of Vladimir Putin as a war
10:04criminal and the release of all political prisoners in Russia.
10:09The unification of the opposition finally happened as a result of a landmark east-west
10:13prisoner swap in August that freed key dissidents and helped to reinvigorate a movement that
10:19was fractured by the death in prison of Navalny.
10:28Pope Francis has called for a probe into whether Israel's attacks in Gaza amount to genocide,
10:34according to excerpts from an upcoming book being released on Tuesday and based on interviews
10:39with the Pope.
10:40This is his first open call for such investigations.
10:44Israel has continuously denied any accusation of genocide.
10:48On Sunday, the Pope also addressed St. Peter's Square on the World Day of the Poor.
11:04In northern Gaza, a strike on a residential building in Beit Elaya killed at least 72
11:10people and wounded dozens, according to Palestinian health officials.
11:15Strikes also killed 10 in the Nuzirat and Burej refugee camps and two on Gaza's main
11:20highway, according to Al-Aqsa Martyr Hospital.
11:24The latest killings has brought the Palestinian death toll to over 43,800 Palestinians, according
11:31to health officials, over half being women and children.
