Superman's Ability that Only Appeared in the Films and was Left Aside
When we talk about Clark Kent, Superman, we talk about one of the most powerful characters in comics. With a range of abilities that go far beyond “simple” super strength, the Kyptonian shoots blasts of heat from his eyes, has a freezing breath and even a magical kiss… That's right. The time has come to talk about the Man of Steel's infamous super-kiss, an ability that only appeared in the films and was never remembered again.
As CBR tells it, the “super kiss” happens in Superman II – The Adventure Continues, a 1981 film, when Clark (Christopher Reeve) and Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) are sent to Niagara Falls for an investigation. In the process, the journalist ends up discovering Superman's true identity and the hero reveals all his love for Lois.
Deciding to abandon everything to live with his beloved, the Man of Steel voluntarily exposes himself to red Kryptonite in an attempt to end his powers. However, when he is unable to simply abandon the heroic life and risk the lives of everyone who depended on his help, he takes his powers back and gives up on his initial plans with Lois.
Although Lois understands, the journalist finds it difficult to relate to Clark now, becoming melancholic and crestfallen. To ease the burden of knowing the truth about her identity, Superman decides to erase her memory with a kiss, ensuring that the journalist returns to being as lively and determined as before.
Superman II doesn't give any context about how the super-kiss works. The ability was never revisited, whether in other films, series, comics or games. Not even Superman III explored the consequences of this, since Lois ended up being very secondary in the plot of the 1983 film.
