00:00An improved tap and go card payment system is being rolled out in the Mersey Tunnels
00:05as part of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority's wider modernisation programme
00:10for the Cross River route. The upgrades began at the Queensway and Kingsway Tunnels from Monday,
00:16with the card payment machines gradually installed in all lanes. The new system will be contactless
00:21only, removing the need to input a PIN number, helping to keep traffic moving during busy
00:27periods. The new contactless system will almost halve the transaction time for card payments,
00:32improving traffic flow on the toll plaza during busy periods and cutting air pollution.
00:38Backed by customer feedback, the new system will replace previous card payment devices
00:43introduced in 2019. With over 80,000 journeys a day, the upgrade is being completed without
00:48having to close the plazas. Though tunnel users are advised to drive carefully,
00:53leave more time for their journey and look out for the correct lane signage
00:57on the plaza during the transition.
