Epic sandworm rides across the desert of Arrakis, a thrilling gladiator battle involving a rhino and a display of the unmitigated feeling of pure Anxiety —those are just a few scenes and characters that have entertained audiences this past year, none of which would be possible without the artisans who make the magic happen behind the scenes.

00:00I know that I speak for so many of us when I say how much it means to have the spotlight on us behind the camera
00:08and how we're not used to being in front.
00:12And when our collaborators, my personal muse, Elle Fanning, speaks of the work with such beauty and articulateness,
00:23it really resonates in a very deep, meaningful way.
00:28It's about being acknowledged, you know, and so thank you so much.
00:33Thank you, Elle, for taking the time to be here.
00:36And, you know, it's odd to talk about a film that nobody's seen yet, but screenings start next week,
00:42so I can't wait for you to see it.
00:45Thank you, Hamilton. Thank you, Variety, for acknowledging costume design and costume designers.
00:54Especially, Jazz mentioned it earlier in her welcome speech, but Jazz is our secret sauce, costume designers' greatest ally.
01:07I called Jazz up when we started our pay equity campaign four years ago,
01:12and through the amplification of Jazz's words and Variety's print, we managed to achieve pay equity this year, which is no small feat.
01:26Pay equity, because costume designers are 80% women, and 20% incredible men, and non-binary and, you know, other pronouns.
01:49And it is really heartfelt. Thank you, Jazz, so much. Thank you, Variety.
01:57And I wouldn't be here without Jim Mangold, for sure.
02:01As Elle said, this is my sixth collaboration with him. It's been a while since we worked together.
02:09And Jim really contributed to my kind of film education.
02:14Our first film together was Girl Interrupted in 1999, and we've had an amazing run.
02:22We did Walk the Line together, which in a way was 18 years ago, but the precursor to this film in many ways.
02:29And also, I met the love of my life on that film, who's here tonight.
02:35Yes, for sure. Mike, you deserve a big shout out.
02:41You know, I also wouldn't be here without the support and collaboration of my incredible team.
02:50I started out very small.
02:53You know, I first found out about this movie in 2019 when Jim said, hey, I'm going to make this very focused biopic.
03:02Our film is set from 1961 to 1965 about Bob Dylan.
03:07And oh, boy, that was amazing to hear.
03:11I was raised on Bob Dylan's music.
03:13I was born in the West Village in New York when he was having his rise.
03:18And so there's a very emotional connection for me personally to this story, the soundtrack of my life.
03:25And I got the opportunity from 2019.
03:29You know, we had a lot of fits and starts with COVID and then schedules.
03:34Timothy went on to do Dune.
03:36Jim had movies scheduling.
03:39And then we finally got started in 2023, which gave us a lot of time to really dig into the research.
03:46And I'm really grateful for that time.
03:48And then as we started two weeks before shooting, we shut down because of the strike, which delayed us another six months, which actually was fortuitous just in terms of the research.
04:00So this is a long time coming.
04:03I'm very proud of the work and I'm very proud of my team.
04:08I started with incredible assistant designers here tonight, Felicia Jarvis.
04:14Thank you, Felicia.
04:15Amazing.
04:16And we shot in New Jersey and in New York.
04:21And my crew, we had over 5,000 extras, 128 speaking parts.
04:26Timmy alone had 70 costume changes.
04:29I have up to 40 people in my department.
04:32It was no small feat.
04:33And we were a small movie, believe it or not.
04:36So I take this award and I'm going to share it with all those incredible people.
04:42Most of my crew is in New York.
04:44And with you, Felicia, my incredible agent, Wayne Fitterman, who gets me, who's never pressured me to do the next big commercial movie and has always supported my choices.
04:56Thank you, Wayne, so much.
04:58I need your support to be able to continue my work and not have to talk to the studios directly.
05:05So thanks.
05:06And my sisters here, who's representing my family, who I am the reason why I'm here because of my mom and dad, who are both artists and writers.
05:16And we're part of that bohemian youth movement in the 60s in Manhattan's Village.
05:23So this has a lot of meaning.
05:26I think I took a lot of time.
05:27Thank you so very much.
