00:00Actually, it's not all about people doing 100 miles an hour on the motorway.
00:03It's about the people that are just driving on our normal roads,
00:07doing a small amount, if you like, over the speed limit.
00:10There's a reason why the roads are 30 miles an hour.
00:13Someone gets hit with a car at 30 miles an hour, they may survive with injuries.
00:19They get hit at 40 miles an hour, the chances are they're going to die.
00:23For me, there isn't any closure.
00:26I believe that the only closure we're going to end up with,
00:29for me, is when my ashes are mixed with her own.
00:38The next thing I'd see her coming out of the garage with her bike,
00:40her high-vis and her helmet on.
00:43She'd go to the end of the drive and then she'd turn around,
00:46give me a little wave, and I'd wave, and then she'd be gone.
00:50Thank you, call over for police, what's the location of the emergency?
00:56She looks in a really bad way.
00:57Okay.
00:59One of Lorraine's work colleagues came through and said,
01:01Chris, you've got to come, Lorraine's been involved in an accident.
01:04I come round the corner and come out the driveway,
01:09and then I just saw Lorraine lying on her back across the road in the gateway.
01:18I said that she's my wife and I went over to her,
01:23and from some of the witness statements, apparently I kept saying, don't leave me.
01:29The doctor came down about one minute past seven and told me she was dead.
01:35Officer in charge came in the house,
01:38and he said, you've got to get Lorraine out of the house,
01:41and I said, no, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't.
01:44Officer in charge came in the house and presented me with an evidence pack
01:50with her necklace and rings and house keys.
02:08She didn't have a long illness that we all could talk to her
02:12and find out what she wanted.
02:14Lorraine was killed in an instant.
02:16So we lost the opportunity, not only losing Lorraine,
02:20but we lost the opportunity to say goodbye.
02:29It doesn't just involve me.
02:32There's a ripple effect throughout the whole generations of families.
02:35Our daughter's life has changed immeasurably.
02:38She worries about me, and I know that,
02:40but there's nothing I can do to stop her from doing that.
02:45I wish she would.
02:46I wish she would look after her family more than worry about me.
02:51I was with her for 38 and a half years, more than half my life.
02:56We were comfortable in each other's company, relaxed.
03:02I think life is easy, really.
03:05We used to sit in our garden during COVID and plan our golden years.
03:22Certainly Lorraine could never understand why car manufacturers
03:27were making cars that would do well over the speed limit.
03:31They get you from A to B, yeah.
03:34Why do you need to travel faster than the law?
03:38Whenever you get in the car,
03:40whenever you think you are going to use your mobile,
03:42whenever you think you're going to adjust your heat in by not looking at the road,
03:47think of Lorraine.
03:48I often sit in my garden and think of you for a while.
03:52Remembering wonderful moments, my sadness becomes a smile.
03:55For sitting in my garden is my favourite place to be,
03:58for I know in my heart you'll be sitting with me.
04:01I don't really know what else to say on that.
04:03If what we do saves one person's life,
04:06if what we do stops one person from speeding,
04:10then it's a success.
04:12Driving at 35, 40 miles an hour, do you regularly do that?
04:16Do you think it's safe?
04:18The point is, it isn't.
04:20Someone gets hit with a car at 30 miles an hour,
04:23they may survive with injuries.
04:26They get hurt 40 miles an hour,
04:27they may survive with injuries.
04:30They get hurt 40 miles an hour, the chances are they're going to die.
04:34And do you want that on your conscience?
04:36Lorraine was everything I ever needed in a wife, in a partner.
04:40I thank my lucky stars for her choosing me.
04:44She was my Mary Poppins.
04:45She was practically perfect in every way.
04:47And I'm certainly half the person without her, without a doubt.
