00:00Hello and welcome back to Pompey Talk. Pompey Talk, Neil, we had so much to talk about that we just simply ran out of time in the main show.
00:10So let's just wrap up some of the other issues that we feel need to be addressed.
00:14Colby Bishop made a dramatic impact, came off the bench to score against Preston last time out.
00:21Seriously, Pompey can't be thinking of starting him against Blackburn Rovers, can they?
00:26John Massino said he thinks it'll be too soon. Blackburn and Mill will be too soon.
00:32They'll be looking at beyond that. It's a really good point though, isn't it?
00:37Because he's been out for three and a bit months now, hasn't he? After the heart surgery, which we've talked about before.
00:45Is he ready to come straight back in the team? When he came on against Preston, he not even had a friendly.
00:54He didn't even play pre-season friendlies. So he's training for that. Is he now ready to start again?
01:00It's a big call, isn't it? I did a story about it yesterday with John Massino saying there's no rush.
01:06We've got enough strikers to choose from. And he has. And from what I've seen from a lot of supporters, they agreed.
01:11Let's not rush him back. There's no need. Obviously, he'll be directed by his medical department.
01:20Because certainly Colby would want to start, wouldn't he? But it's an intriguing one, isn't it?
01:25The severity of the procedure that meant he was off for so long. The lack of minutes. Is he ready to start again?
01:34I don't know. I would personally err on the side of caution and not rush him back.
01:40But it's Colby Bishop and Yankee's not been ripping up too many trees, apart from against Bahrain.
01:47Would you put him straight in? I'm not sure I would. It's a fascinating one.
01:54I know John Massino has come out and said we're treating him as a normal player now.
01:59Yes, he's had his hard issues. But we've given the all clear. He's been given the all clear by the medical team.
02:07So they have to approach him as a player who is fit and ready for action.
02:13But surely there must be a little bit of we need to build him up. As you say, Regan Poole has just been thrown straight back into it.
02:20And his performances have probably dipped as a result of it.
02:23So you don't want Colby Bishop to come back in after the euphoria against Preston and then have that dip.
02:29You want him to carry that momentum in. And surely that means bringing him in careful management on Pogby's part.
02:37Yeah, and it's not that they're not desperate. So they've got, I mean, he reeled off Cassini, Yankee, Mark, Omani.
02:47Then you've got Elias Sorensen and Christian Seidig. Seidig has had some decent spells this year.
02:55Middlesbrough away was very, very good, but he's not really conventional centre forward in that role, is he?
03:00And he's had better impact dropping behind. Yeah. And then Sorensen, well, he's struggling massively, so he won't be considered.
03:09So but he's still got Yankee and Omani to choose and both scored during the international break for their respective countries, didn't they?
03:16So he's not with Paul and McIntyre. He had to throw them in. There was no one else.
03:22So with Bishop, he can afford to take his time, but perhaps he thinks he might be ready now.
03:29Yeah. So, yeah, I mean, I was on the side of caution, but that's me. Other people would say throw him in.
03:37But you have to be wary of the injuries he's had. Sorry, not the injury, but the condition he's had.
03:44And the sort of player he is, because he's a hardworking physical player. Is he physically ready as well?
03:53Yeah, yeah. I suppose what has to come into thinking to you is Cassini Yankee.
03:57It's not as if he's been playing international football in Europe where it's been getting three hour, four hour flights.
04:02He's literally been to Australia, played in Australia, then he's flown to Bahrain.
04:06I know he reported back to Pompidou on Wednesday, which everybody was really surprised by.
04:11But surely that there does catch up on you. And surely that has to be a factor in John Massingham's thinking for the Blackburn game.
04:18Yeah, it is, isn't it? It's bound to be. I couldn't believe it when I saw him killing his boots at 2.30 yesterday afternoon.
04:25And he played in Bahrain the previous night, hadn't he? So, yeah, he came straight back.
04:31John Massingham said, yeah, it's OK to feature, but those long journeys. Yeah, is he ready?
04:39He did it, didn't he, Carlisle away last year when he did it and he was named on the bench and I don't think he came on.
04:46So it might come up a few minutes away. I can't quite remember. But yeah, it's an interesting one with him about you've got to.
04:54I remember him saying last year he was new to international football and he was saying that he was initially finding it difficult
05:02going to Australia and coming back again at the end of that international break.
05:06So, yeah, that's that's considered. Oman is there as well, of course. Yeah.
05:11And he's had good flashes as well, hasn't he, this season?
05:14Definitely. Noah talked about Conor Shaughnessy on the main poppy talk programme.
05:19But we've also then got updates on Swanson, Williams, Farrell.
05:23But not all of them are going to be available for Blackburn. It's going to come too soon by the sounds of it.
05:28Yeah, those three won't be available either. I can't be struggling it right back at the moment.
05:34I think Devlin is doing very well there. Yeah.
05:38Yeah. Probably need them back for the squad, but it's not a crucial position at the moment, is it?
05:45So, yeah. So, yeah, with Williams and Swanson. And then Farrell's been out for a while again.
05:53He's not going to come straight back in, is he? He's only had one match so far, hasn't he?
05:58He did OK. Again, he's a very tricky customer in that Sheffield United game.
06:05And Ogilvy, for me, is growing. He's started off slowly this season, but he is improving at this level, isn't he?
06:12I think. And he's got a couple of goals now as well. So, yeah, they're not essential positions for me at the moment.
06:20Yeah. And one final position.
06:21Although, having said that, before anyone knows, having said that, I would like to see Farrell in the team.
06:25Because, in theory, he reportedly gives more attacking impetus than Ogilvy. Ogilvy is clearly a defender, very defensively minded.
06:35So, it would give Pompey a new dimension, having a more attacking, thrusting left back.
06:40So, that would be very interesting to see. So, yeah.
06:43The only thing about Farrell is, we keep on going on about the Championship-ready players.
06:47We haven't even had a chance to even judge whether Farrell is able to step up.
06:52We've seen so little of him, even in pre-season. There were very few opportunities to even see him.
06:57So, he remains just a completely unknown contender, doesn't he?
07:01Yes, yes. And, I mean, John Messina has never been that convincing that he's too much different to Ogilvy.
07:13But we've been told he's going to be more attacking. So, we're all waiting to learn and see.
07:17He did okay attacking against Sheffield United. Defensively, he struggled.
07:21But that's to be expected, because he was against a really good performer.
07:24And we know Ogilvy is very sound and solid defensively, but he doesn't quite give enough coming forward.
07:31Having said that, with Pompey struggling in the Championship, sometimes you need somebody who's better at defending at left back.
07:38So, yeah. I'd like to see Farrell giving a run of games, just to judge him properly.
07:44Not on one game, whether he was at a good game, bad game, or average game. We just need to judge him.
07:49He's not the type of player that they'll probably want to get out on loan if they do have to make some departures available in January.
07:56Has he won that?
07:57No, no chance. No, no, no, no, no. Scratch that out. No.
08:01They've got no other left backs, have they?
08:03Yeah.
08:04They've got three right backs. Probably put Marlon Packett right back one day. You don't even know, do you?
08:09They've got three right backs, but they need more competition at left back, don't they?
08:15Jordan Cross, in our last chat on Pompey Talk, inferred that maybe left back has to be a priority for Pompey in the transfer window.
08:23Simply because we can't rely on Farrell and we all feel it. Ogilvy, I know he's stepping up to the point.
08:31They're still better probably out there. So that can't be outside the realms of possibility that Pompey actually do go down that route and bring in a left back in January.
08:41Massino said the line a few times about, we're looking at every position. Very safe and sound line, isn't it? We're looking at every position.
08:48But yes, they did admit they are genuinely, definitely looking at centre-half.
08:55If they're not looking at every position, they don't need another goalie. They don't need another right back.
09:01They don't need another centre-forward, no.
09:03No, so that's not the case. Left back, they will be looking at left back because Ogilvy has started all but one game, hasn't he, really?
09:14And Farrell keeps having these injury problems. So it may be one they want to address.
09:20Maybe they can find a better player that appeals to them to bring in that position.
09:25But yes, that could be a spot, couldn't it, clearly?
09:29You mentioned the goalkeeper department and we'll wrap up after speaking about this here.
09:34What's your reading of the Will Norris situation there?
09:38Yes, I feel sorry for Will Norris because we have short memories.
09:47And he was an outstanding player for Pompey last season.
09:50The way they played, especially. Named in the Team of the Year as a goalie.
09:55Pompey won the league title with him there in the team.
09:58So for me, if you win promotion or a title and a player who plays every game, that deserves respect.
10:05And he should be forever respected for it.
10:10And at the start of the season, he was up and down.
10:16He had some man-of-the-match performances, but also he made errors, didn't he?
10:20And Smith came in to replace him.
10:22But I just don't like seeing him disparage so much and criticise because he's been a title winner for Pompey.
10:33And let's not forget that. It was only six months ago.
10:37He stood on the stage there and things.
10:40But he's out of the team at the moment.
10:43Smith's done nothing wrong so far. He's been fine to me, Smith. He's been alright.
10:46But Pompey played differently.
10:48Smith is not challenged to use his feet as much as Norris did.
10:52Pompey played a bit more directly and it's a different remit now for the new goalie.
11:00So again, Smith gets rid of the team. That's how he's done. He's done fine so far.
11:04He's made some decent saves.
11:06And Norris, what happens to him next?
11:11Former first-choice goalie. He's not even getting in the squad now.
11:14So you'd imagine that would be addressed in January.
11:18Is he happy? His contract's up in the summer, I think it is.
11:21So yeah, what are you going to do there?
11:24Yeah, okay. I'm not pressing any more on that there then.
11:27Right, well just a reminder that you have been watching Pompey Talk Extra.
11:30You can watch the main Pompey Talk on our website and on Shots TV.
11:34But yeah, Neil, thank you again for your little bit of extra help there.
