Some of award season’s most anticipated films are underperforming at the box office.
Transcript
00:00This year's Golden Globe nominations are packed with highbrow prestigious films,
00:03but we need to talk about how many of these critic-pleasing movies are falling flat at
00:07the box office. A number of award season favorites received nominations for the 2023 Golden Globe
00:12Awards, including Steven Spielberg's The Fablements and Todd Field's Tar. However,
00:16these critically favored films have failed to bring in revenue large enough to justify their cost.
00:20The Fablements cost $40 million to make and collected just $5.7 million in its four weeks
00:25of limited play. Tar cost $35 million to make and market, but ticket sales totaled only $5.3
00:30million. Other big-budget drama films like She Said, Devotion, and Armageddon Time failed to
00:34bring in a quarter of their individual budgets. Film critics attribute the lackluster ticket sales
00:38to the fact that people have grown comfortable watching movies at home. This was seen earlier
00:42this year when Coda became the first streaming film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
00:46Critics also say that downbeat movies tend to underperform during a time when people want to
00:50escape. This is why other Golden Globe nominated films such as Elvis, Top Gun Maverick, and
00:55Everything Everywhere All at Once have soared past their cost to make.
