00:00Montana just became the first state in the United States to ban TikTok. But can
00:03the new law even effectively be enforced? Root can explain in less than 60 seconds.
00:07Montana Republican Governor Greg Gianforte signed the TikTok ban into law in order to protect
00:12Montanan's private data and sensitive personal information from being harvested by the Chinese
00:17Communist Party. But cybersecurity experts say it will be difficult to enforce the ban on a
00:22state-by-state basis and believe that many could circumnavigate the ban by using a virtual private
00:27network. Under the new legislation, users would not be penalized for breaking the law. But rather,
00:31app stores owned by Apple and Google, as well as TikTok itself, would be fined $10,000 per day
00:37every time someone is given the opportunity to access the platform. A TikTok spokesperson said
00:41the new measure violates free speech rights. The new law, which is not scheduled to take
00:45effect until 2024, is expected to meet legal opposition before then.
