00:00Many U.S. companies announced they will pay travel costs for employees that will now have to leave their home state to get an abortion.
00:07So which companies have made the pledge, and is it even legal?
00:10Brute can explain in less than 60 seconds.
00:12Top execs at companies like Amazon, Lyft, and Dick's Sporting Goods spoke out to say that their employees' health plans will continue to include abortion coverage, even if it means finding access out of state.
00:23However, many legal experts question whether these types of policies will trigger lawsuits from states and organizations that plan to severely restrict or ban abortion.
00:32Companies that fully fund their own health plans will likely be protected by a federal law that makes it illegal for states to adopt requirements that relate to employer-sponsored health plans.
00:42But other medium- and smaller-sized companies that buy their employees' health coverage through commercial insurers would, however, be subjugated to state law.
00:50That federal law also does not protect against criminal laws.
00:53So if a state makes it a crime to aid and abet an abortion, the company might be criminally charged.
