On India’s 75 years of independence, we present the story of India's Toofani sand artist, Sudarsan Pattnaik, who used his art to raise voice against global issues and won 30 international championships for India. 00:00The sand that people consider to be dust,
00:02I have been given such a great honor for that same sand.
00:19The one who changes the identity of the country,
00:21that person is a storm at every turn.
00:31I made something out of the sand that was available here.
00:34I got a free canvas.
00:36If I had to spend money on this art,
00:39obviously I wouldn't be able to do it.
01:01Some people asked me,
01:03why are you making it out of sand?
01:05There are so many materials that can be sold,
01:07that can have commercial value.
01:09This doesn't stay, it flies in the air,
01:11it gets washed away in the water.
01:13So what's the point of making it?
01:25I collected Rs. 100 from people and bought a ticket.
01:29But after that, when I applied for a visa,
01:32my visa got rejected.
01:34It was a time of great depression for me.
01:51When the time came,
01:53when we started winning international championships abroad,
01:56that's when people realized that
01:58sand sculpture is an internationally well-known art form.
02:01We represent India in it.
02:12I thought that sand art is a public art form.
02:15Millions of people see this art.
02:17So why don't we give people a positive message
02:19through this art?
02:27The storm was the same
02:29when the Indian government chose me
02:31to be the Prime Minister.
02:33So this was a very big moment in my life.
