00:00We are here at the mission of a cat organization.
00:03According to the Philippine Animal Welfare Society,
00:05it is estimated that there are more than 12 million stray cats in the country.
00:10This is worrying because aside from the dangers that these cats may face,
00:15it is saddening to think that there are many animals that are not considered family and are being taken as pets.
00:22And in the middle of this problem, the role of cat organizations is big,
00:26just like a volunteer-led group in Quezon City.
00:30Their mission to create safe spaces, watch this video.
00:36Meow, meow, meow.
00:38You may be one of the people who can often see cats
00:41roaming the park, around the mall and other establishments
00:46where you can freely hold them and bond with them.
00:50These are street cats.
00:52Many of them were born on the street
00:54and have never experienced having a family or a home.
00:57And because of this, they are vulnerable to many dangers.
01:01That's why a volunteer-led organization in Cubao, Quezon City,
01:05gave them a family and a home that will make them feel the love they deserve.
01:11The mission of City Cats Cubao has long been to help street and stray cats.
01:16They are active in various programs such as adoption drive, food distribution, and neutering and spaying.
01:24In the past few months, several adoption drives have been launched
01:28that have helped to provide a home for stray cats that have been abandoned on the streets.
01:34Through donations and help from private companies and organizations,
01:39many cats are happy to find a family.
01:42The stray cats that are in their care are safe and loved.
01:47But they still need a home.
01:49So let's create safe spaces for homeless cats where they are fed and cared for.
01:58And this morning, we are joined by the founder of City Cats Cubao,
02:02Ma'am Maluma Nikis, and member Mira Alarcon.
02:05Good morning! Welcome to Rise and Shine, Filipinas!
02:08Good morning!
02:09Your advocacy is so beautiful.
02:11Tell us your story. How did your organization start?
02:15What was your inspiration?
02:17Well, first of all, I'd like to thank you.
02:19It's a beautiful video that you prepared.
02:24I'm so happy to see our cats there.
02:28Amazing, right?
02:30Yeah, the inspiration, I started this during the COVID.
02:36Okay.
02:38Prior to that, I was just doing random feeding inside the condo
02:45because there were a lot of cats.
02:46And then, I started going out.
02:49At that time, all the establishments were closed.
02:51The cats were so pitiful. There was no food.
02:55And then, I found out a guard.
02:58He said,
02:59Ma'am, just give me food.
03:03I'll feed the cats.
03:05So, that's the idea of a safe space came from that.
03:09Why not naturally support people who would like to feed?
03:17So, when I met this co-resident, Monica,
03:24I said, let's start this.
03:28But let's not do random feeding.
03:30We can't do that.
03:32Because random feeding,
03:34if you don't maintain the schedule,
03:37the feeding time,
03:38the cats will be pitiful.
03:40So, we said, let's have people who will really commit to feeding them every day.
03:45So, we looked for guards, sanitation, vendor, worker.
03:52So, from just two, we started with two.
03:56We now have 16 safe spaces for cats.
03:59And these are in condominiums, in the malls,
04:03and property, as in call center properties.
04:09So, around that area.
04:12Alright.
04:13Mira, what inspired you to join this organization?
04:17Actually, we're the same.
04:19I was a random feeder even before.
04:21So, I transferred to our condo.
04:24I was feeding.
04:25And then, I saw a cat that looked like it was sick.
04:29So, I thought there was a community in the condo.
04:31I searched on Facebook.
04:33I couldn't find anyone.
04:34And then, I saw my city cats there.
04:36So, I approached them.
04:37Ma'am, are you aware that there are cats here?
04:40Because there are a lot of them.
04:41And then, Ms. Malu knew.
04:42But she doesn't have that many members in our condo.
04:46So, I approached her.
04:48If ever, is it okay for us to build a community?
04:51I also have a volunteer, Kent.
04:53So, the two of us are managing the cats in the building.
04:56So, to the point that our admin,
04:58it's a good thing that they're supportive.
05:00Like what we're saying,
05:01we have like 15 cats in the community.
05:03Is it okay if we stay?
05:05Because we're the ones managing to feed them,
05:07to vet them.
05:09So, that's where it started.
05:10So, it's only now that I became very hands-on.
05:13Because Ms. Malu also inspired us that
05:15you can do it.
05:16You can maintain the condo.
05:18Because if you're a random feeder,
05:20why don't you just maintain them?
05:22That's where the inspiration comes from.
05:24It's great that your community is already growing.
05:27Because the idea is,
05:28if you keep them in a safe space,
05:31you get to
05:33the next one,
05:35and then adoption.
05:37So, the whole process.
05:39Okay, tell us about that.
05:40Your adoption drive.
05:42Yes.
05:43On Saturday,
05:45we will hold an adoption drive in a mall.
05:48This is in partnership with
05:51the entire management of that area.
05:53Can I mention it?
05:55Yes.
05:56So, this area is a small community
05:59with a lot of condos,
06:00a lot of buildings.
06:02So,
06:04it's a small city community,
06:06but there are a lot of cats.
06:08So, our first thing is depopulation.
06:11We will help you depopulate
06:14the cats without throwing them away.
06:18But give us a free venue
06:21to hold an adoption drive.
06:23So, we have a lot of cats.
06:25We have adopted 140 cats since 2020.
06:30Wow, that's a lot.
06:32There are also online adoption drives,
06:34but there are more adoption drives in the mall.
06:38So, on Saturday, we will hold that.
06:40We have around 25 cats and kittens
06:43up for adoption.
06:44Okay, where is this?
06:47Quezon City.
06:49Okay.
06:50What is the process
06:51when they want to adopt?
06:52Are there any requirements?
06:54Yes.
06:55First of all,
06:56when they go to our area,
06:58we have a lot of cats.
06:59Usually, when they go there,
07:01they look for the one
07:02that really calls out to them.
07:03Okay.
07:04When they see the connection,
07:05what they need to do
07:07is to fill out a form.
07:09We have a standard form
07:11so that we can monitor the cats.
07:13And then,
07:14after a short interview,
07:16to see if they have the capability to maintain.
07:18Of course, we love cats.
07:20So, we hope that they also love cats.
07:23And then, after a short interview,
07:25we need to reiterate
07:27that our special rule
07:29is that when they reach the right age,
07:31for example, when they are young,
07:32they should be able to lay eggs.
07:33Because that is the goal of the group.
07:35They should not get pregnant.
07:37Because if they don't lay eggs,
07:39it will be difficult for the management
07:41or the person who adopts them.
07:43And then, finally,
07:44there is a photo
07:45so that they can show their strength.
07:48And then, on social media,
07:50we also update them
07:52on the condition of the cat,
07:54how it is doing.
07:55So, you also update them.
07:57We require that,
07:58post-adoption monitoring.
08:00Really.
08:01And if they have problems,
08:02they can approach us.
08:03If the cat is sick,
08:04if the cat's personality
08:06suddenly changes,
08:07what do they do?
08:09Okay.
08:10Lastly,
08:11please send a message
08:12to our viewers
08:13and maybe those who want to adopt,
08:15what are your pieces of advice
08:16for them to do?
08:17And social media, please,
08:18so that you can contact
08:20those who want to participate.
08:22Go ahead.
08:23We'd like to encourage everyone,
08:27the public,
08:28to please adopt a community cat.
08:31You can approach
08:33AAS City Cats Cubao
08:35or any other cat group.
08:37There are many there
08:39willing to assist you
08:42in finding the right cat for you.
08:46On Saturday,
08:47if you can go there,
08:49we posted the details
08:51about the adoption drive.
08:53I hope you give a chance
08:56to the cats and kittens
08:57to find their forever home.
08:59Let us all help make the city
09:02safe for cats
09:04and of course,
09:05the entire Philippines.
09:07For me,
09:08my message is
09:09to the condo dwellers,
09:11if you have time,
09:12I hope you can walk around.
09:14Usually, the cats are in the basements.
09:16If you have time,
09:17please feed the cats
09:18because they don't expect much from us.
09:21It's not their fault
09:22that they live there
09:23because they were born there.
09:24What we can do
09:25is to make the place harmonious
09:26for both humans and cats
09:28or any other pets in general.
09:30Thank you very much,
09:32Ms. Malu and Ms. Mira,
09:34for sharing your story.
09:35Your advocacy is very true.
09:37I hope the community will grow
09:39and I hope more stray cats
09:42will find their forever home
09:46and take care of them.
09:48Give them a good home.
09:49Thank you very much
09:50for sharing the good vibes today.
