00:00Hi, I'm Tawny and I'm a hairstylist here at Shallows Manchester.
00:03Here at Manchester World we're going to try and build up as many independent businesses as we can
00:07and Shallows Studio is just that. It's an amazing unconventional beauty spot on the edge of
00:11Manchester's gay village. Last week we spoke to Alana and heard a little bit about her story.
00:15Today we're talking to Tawny who's going to tell us about her path into hairstyling
00:19and what makes Shallows special.
00:21Yeah, I started training three years ago so yeah my journey started then and I've
00:25been fully qualified for coming up to 18 months now.
00:28It was something I've been wanting to do for quite a long time
00:31but I was too old to become an apprentice.
00:33But then back in 2021 I was seeing quite a nice tax rebate.
00:37I happened to pass a salon in my local area that was advertising
00:42for getting students for a course that they were starting
00:46and it all just sort of went from there really.
00:48My big passion is colour.
00:50Hair is such an important component of expression and identity and sort of
00:55you know people's personal sense of well-being and confidence.
00:59It's a very very key component in sort of boosting someone in a positive way.
01:05I could not have dreamt of finding a place like this.
01:08I just sort of came by one day.
01:10DC, the owner, happened to be in. I had a lovely chat with her.
01:13She got me on boarded and I really haven't looked back.
01:17I really like it here.
01:18Everyone that I work with is really supportive, really helpful.
01:21They've even put on little sort of skill swap workshops where I can learn from them.
01:25So even though we're self-employed, we're not getting paid to help each other out.
01:29We still do it anyway of our own volition because that's how supportive we all are.
01:33It just feels like the perfect place for me.
01:36Manchester is a city that has been through a lot of things over the course of the years
01:41and we still thrive.
01:43We're still a vibrant, you know, open, happy city.
01:49Given the demographic of not only the people who work here but also the clientele,
01:53it is just perfectly situated.
01:55I don't think, well I personally cannot think of a better location for it.
