00:00Hmm.
00:02Well, that depends.
00:03It's a complicated question.
00:05Oh, my gosh.
00:07Ooh.
00:09Um...
00:10When I was a little girl,
00:12my mom and her sister,
00:14the three of us went on a weekend away,
00:17and there was a guy at the motel,
00:19and he somehow, like, asked us out to dinner.
00:21That night, my mom and her sister
00:23argued whether or not he would pay,
00:25and then one of them said,
00:26I'll bet you 20 bucks.
00:28Something that is on my mind very much right now
00:30are the messages that we're sending
00:31to our very young people.
00:33What are they observing
00:34from the cues we're giving them?
00:35What are they absorbing
00:36that we don't know they're taking in?
00:38And how are they formulating
00:40who they are in the world
00:41based on all of that?
00:42I was raised that men pay for dinner.
00:44I was raised that men pay for most things.
00:47But my mother was very big on being paid for.
00:49I was also not taught
00:50that that was remotely unfeminist.
00:52I really like exploring
00:54what gender dynamics are at play
00:56and how different generations
00:58view those gender dynamics.
00:59I love Mindy.
01:01She's recently divorced.
01:02She has a kid that she has to take care of.
01:04She doesn't have that masculine container
01:06to hold her anymore.
01:07I mean, there's a lot of these things
01:08that are still very prevalent,
01:10and they still go on,
01:11and they're outdatedly current.
01:14How I think of it
01:15is my character is like the camera.
01:17She's the one who's taking it all in,
01:20watching it happen.
01:21You see from her eyes.
01:23It's about something complicated and nuanced,
01:25and I think it's the most fun to make.
01:27When I think of the visual style of the film,
01:29I think of the beautiful shots
01:31when we get close to actors,
01:33and we really see what's going on with them.
01:35I want this film to have a warm
01:36and intimate relationship with the audience
01:39where they almost feel
01:40like they maybe shouldn't be watching,
01:42but they're so glad that they are.
