00:0020 Things We Expect From King Charles III's Reign
00:05King Charles III ascended to the throne on September 8th, 2022, after his mother Queen
00:10Elizabeth II passed away.
00:13The question everyone's asking is what will King Charles III be like as the reigning monarch
00:19and head of the Commonwealth?
00:21What are his goals and aspirations?
00:24What should the public prepare for?
00:27These are the 20 things we think we can expect from King Charles III's reign.
00:32Number 1.
00:33A Modernized Monarchy
00:36Queen Elizabeth II wore the crown for 70 years.
00:40A lot has changed since her coronation in 1952.
00:45King Charles III has a goal to modernize the monarchy to fit into a modern world.
00:51There are already signs this is a priority for King Charles III.
00:55The day after the Queen died, he greeted mourners outside Buckingham Palace.
01:00He shook hands and exchanged well-wishes.
01:04King Charles appears to want to be a public-facing, personable monarch.
01:09He seems to want to get to know people and change the monarchy to fit into their modern
01:13lives.
01:15As thousands of people queued to visit the Queen laying in state in Westminster Hall,
01:20King Charles III made an unexpected visit to the queue.
01:24He thanked people for waiting and encouraged them to hang on.
01:28In his short time as king, Charles has already made significant advances in modernizing the
01:33monarchy.
01:34However, there is still a long way to go.
01:38The British public wants to see a monarch who understands them and their struggles.
01:43They need the crown to be tangible and relevant.
01:47Will King Charles III be able to accomplish all of this during his reign?
01:51Or will he just focus on the very important task of connecting with the people?
01:57Only time will tell.
02:00Number 2.
02:01A Stable Presence It is a monarch's duty to be a stable presence
02:06for their subjects.
02:08Queen Elizabeth II exemplified strength in her stability.
02:13During her reign, Queen Elizabeth II oversaw war, recession, tragedy, political scandal,
02:19and death.
02:21Queen Elizabeth was committed and resolute through these challenges.
02:25Britons could rely on her for support and assistance during challenging times.
02:31Queen Elizabeth II was the very personification of a stable, resolute leader.
02:37It's King Charles III's obligation to continue with this tradition and remain a stable presence
02:42for the public.
02:43Therefore, it is safe to say that he'll follow in his mother's footsteps and prioritize
02:48stability above all else.
02:50Number 3.
02:52Balancing Tradition with Progress King Charles III will have the difficult task
02:57of balancing tradition with progress.
03:00He'll want to continue the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, but will also strive for progress.
03:06The accession council is a ceremonial body which assembles in St. James Palace the day
03:11after the death of a monarch.
03:13It was televised for the first time in history after Queen Elizabeth's death.
03:18The proclamation of the king was read out in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast
03:23in front of the world's media.
03:25This is a prime example of King Charles III making an effort to balance tradition with
03:30progress.
03:32But how will he do this in a way that continues to respect traditions that are so deeply rooted
03:37in the monarchy?
03:39This will be a challenging aspect of King Charles III's reign, and we're all waiting
03:44to see how he does it.
03:47Number 4.
03:48An Outspoken Monarch King Charles III has gotten into hot water
03:53for his outspoken political and social views in the past.
03:57He's never been afraid of voicing his opinions, regardless of how controversial they may be.
04:03In 2015, several secret memos spanning over 10 years were released to the public after
04:08a long legal battle.
04:11The letters and memorandums, known as the Black Spider memos, were written by King Charles
04:15III to government ministers and politicians.
04:19King Charles sent the letters privately.
04:22In them, he expressed his views on issues such as farming, genetic modification, climate
04:27change, social deprivation, and architecture.
04:31The Black Spider memos were so controversial because members of the royal family are expected
04:36to remain politically neutral.
04:38The Black Spider memos seem to suggest King Charles III was trying to sway political opinion
04:44and influence public policy.
04:47While the contents of the memos were not particularly bad, many people were concerned about the
04:52precedent King Charles III had set.
04:55He appeared comfortable liaising with ministers and officials on matters that directly benefited
05:00him.
05:01It appears King Charles III has learned his lesson.
05:03However, questions remain about how spoken he'll be during his reign.
05:08Based on some of his actions in his short time as king already, it's unlikely King Charles
05:12III will tone down his personality too much.
05:16While signing a visitor book at Hillsborough Castle in Belfast, King Charles shouted at
05:20a leaky pen in front of the world's media.
05:23King Charles said with frustration, Oh God, I hate this pen.
05:27I can't bear this bloody thing.
05:29Every stinking time.
05:31Will he be forced to tone down his outspoken nature now that he's the king?
05:35Only time will tell.
05:38Number 5.
05:40Constitutional Change.
05:42One of the offshoots of progress and modernity that threatens the crown as we know it, is
05:47a growing appeal from the public for constitutional change.
05:50King Charles III will have to deal with rising public support for constitutional change and
05:55republicanism during his reign.
05:58King Charles has already faced Republican protests as he toured Edinburgh through his
06:02proclamations.
06:04On September 11, 2022, a young woman was arrested in Edinburgh for holding a sign that read
06:11Fuck Imperialism, Abolish Monarchy.
06:14Later that day, a 45-year-old man was arrested for shouting, Who elected him?
06:18A head of state has been imposed on us without our consent.
06:22It is likely that this will continue to be a challenge for King Charles III during his
06:26reign.
06:27As of 2022, only 33% of British 18 to 24-year-olds support the monarchy.
06:34However, over 77% of people 65 plus continue to show their allegiance to the crown.
06:41Overall, 62% of the British public have supported the monarchy throughout all ages.
06:47That's an awful lot of dislike for the crown that King Charles is going to have to deal
06:51with.
06:53Number 6.
06:55Decolonization.
06:58Decolonization is the action or process of withdrawing from a former colony, leaving
07:02it independent.
07:04There are still 15 nations where King Charles III is head of state.
07:08All of these countries have had conversations at some stage or another about decolonization.
07:13In particular, Australia and New Zealand have strong Republican tendencies.
07:19King Charles III will potentially have to deal with several Commonwealth countries separating
07:23themselves from the British Empire once and for all.
07:27Number 7.
07:30Environmental Advocacy.
07:33King Charles III has always been an advocate for the environment.
07:37In 1970, when he was 21, King Charles III made his first public speech about the threat
07:42of plastic waste, chemicals, and air pollution to the environment.
07:47King Charles III has continued his passion for the environment throughout his life.
07:52Most recently, at the Paris Climate Conference in Paris 2015, King Charles III spoke about
07:57climate change and the importance of protecting the environment.
08:02Number 8.
08:04Dedication and Devotion.
08:06Like his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles will be a dedicated and devoted monarch.
08:12King Charles III will dedicate the rest of his life to serving the British people.
08:17Number 9.
08:18Slow Decline in Public Support.
08:21Throughout King Charles III's reign, there will be a decline in public support for the
08:25monarchy.
08:26In the decades since Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, there's been a dramatic
08:30decline in public support.
08:33In 2012, 73% of Britain supported the monarchy.
08:37Now it's only 62%.
08:39It's very likely this number will continue to drop.
08:44Number 10.
08:45Meddling in Public Affairs.
08:47King Charles III has a reputation for meddling in public affairs.
08:52As king, it is completely unacceptable to publicly share personal political opinions.
08:58King Charles III will have to refrain from publicizing his political views and getting
09:02too close to government ministers.
09:05It is expected King Charles III won't meddle in public affairs, however, he doesn't exactly
09:11have a good track record.
09:14Number 11.
09:15Not as Religious as His Mother.
09:18Along with the title of king, Charles also holds the title of Defender of the Faith.
09:23This means he's also head of the Church of England.
09:26In 1956, one-third of the British public believed that the monarchy was appointed by
09:31God.
09:32In 2022, the British population is far more diverse and multicultural.
09:38Religion isn't as present in people's lives as it was during Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
09:43King Charles III will need to appeal to everyone, not just those who are part of the Church
09:48of England.
09:49Because of this, it's expected King Charles III will be less publicly religious than his
09:54mother.
09:56Number 12.
09:58Family-Focused Monarch.
10:00King Charles III is the patriarch of a big family.
10:04He'll want to present as a family-focused, value-driven monarch.
10:08It's important King Charles III keeps his family close, especially in light of recent
10:13scandals.
10:15It's expected that King Charles III will make frequent public appearances with his immediate
10:20and extended family throughout his reign.
10:24Number 13.
10:25A Charitable King.
10:27King Charles III has always been very charitable.
10:30He's a patron of over 19 organizations personally founded by him, known as the Prince's Charities.
10:37King Charles's most renowned charity is the Prince's Trust.
10:41It was founded in 1976 to help vulnerable young people.
10:46It supports 11 to 30-year-olds who are unemployed, struggling at school, or in poverty.
10:52It's expected King Charles III will continue with his important charity work throughout
10:56his reign.
10:58Number 14.
11:00Repairing the Monarchy's Reputation.
11:02King Charles III has an important and daunting task of repairing the monarchy's reputation.
11:08Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior royals and Prince Andrew was
11:12accused of sexual assault, the monarchy's reputation has never been worse.
11:18King Charles III will have to put effort into rebuilding public trust in the institution.
11:24Number 15.
11:26Slimming Down the Monarchy.
11:28King Charles III is planning to slim down the monarchy.
11:31He's expected to cut the number of working royals down to seven.
11:35This is the first of many plans to modernize the monarchy in an appeal to the public.
11:40Cutting down the number of working royals saves taxpayers money and focuses attention
11:45on those family members who are the most influential.
11:50Number 16.
11:51Commitment to the Commonwealth.
11:53King Charles III will be as committed to the Commonwealth as Queen Elizabeth II.
11:58Queen Elizabeth was an amazing head of the Commonwealth for over 70 years.
12:03As head of the Commonwealth, the Queen was the sovereign and head of state of 32 countries
12:08during her lifetime.
12:09At the time of her death, she was head of state of 15 countries.
12:13Queen Elizabeth II was also the ceremonial leader of the entire Commonwealth of Nations.
12:19This includes 58 member states, many of which have transitioned into republics in recent
12:24decades.
12:25The Commonwealth is expected to be a major focus for King Charles III during his reign.
12:32Number 17.
12:33Uphold Ceremonial Tradition.
12:37King Charles III will uphold ceremonial tradition throughout his reign.
12:42Some of his ceremonial duties include giving royal assent to bills, opening parliament,
12:47appointing members of the House of Lords, and granting knighthoods.
12:51These are all very important roles that'll be the main preoccupation of King Charles
12:55III.
12:57Number 18.
12:59Have an International Presence.
13:02King Charles III is expected to continue to travel overseas throughout his reign.
13:07He'll have to maintain an international presence to create relationships with world leaders
13:12and uphold the reputation of the crown overseas.
13:16Despite his age, King Charles III is expected to travel frequently.
13:21Number 19.
13:23Support the New Prince of Wales.
13:26King Charles III will dedicate a lot of his time to supporting the new Prince of Wales.
13:31King Charles has a very close relationship with his son William.
13:35He is expected to guide Prince William through his new role as heir.
13:40Number 20.
13:42Short but Sweet.
13:44King Charles III's reign is expected to be short but sweet.
13:48King Charles III is currently 73 years old.
13:52And unless there are major scientific advancements, he won't be living forever.
13:57King Charles III's reign will not be as enduring as his late mother's.
14:03Can you think of any other things we should expect from King Charles III's reign?
