00:00My life is literally ruined because I got my teeth redone.
00:04Have real teeth officially gone out of style?
00:06If you've noticed celebs' smiles look a little off these days,
00:09it's because famous people can't stop filling their mouths with fake teeth.
00:13And some people think they've gone too far for pearly perfection.
00:16This is how veneers look to me.
00:17This is how they look to you!
00:19I feel like everybody's teeth look the same, just like a little square.
00:22Dental veneers are porcelain casings placed over the exterior of the tooth
00:25in order to improve their appearance.
00:27But veneers are typically permanent.
00:29Dentists will usually drill down a patient's teeth to almost nothing
00:32so a veneer can be secured over it.
00:34That means once your natural tooth has been shaved away,
00:37you'll need some kind of dental prosthetic forever.
00:39For celebrities, fixing a flawed smile seems like a no-brainer.
00:43But the booming dental veneer trend has some serious downsides for famous folks.
00:47Stars are stepping out with teeth that are blindingly white,
00:50freakishly even,
00:51and bordering on the uncanny valley look.
00:53I don't think a lot of people realize
00:55how many celebrities have chosen to get these big white veneers.
00:59For former Disney actress Hilary Duff,
01:01the debut of her porcelain veneers back in 2005 had the media perplexed.
01:06Duff got dental veneers after chipping her front teeth,
01:08but blogs were quick to mock her new smile for being way too big,
01:11calling her horse teeth,
01:13until she eventually replaced them with a smaller set.
01:15But I remember when she got these bad boys.
01:18Everybody was calling her horse face, horsey, literally, as you can see.
01:22And of course, Taylor Swift's mouth has been scrutinized for years,
01:26with an entire TikTok account devoted to doing veneer checks
01:30on her and other celebrities' botched smiles.
01:33I mean, new veneers, they're white, they're different shapes,
01:35the laterals are different shapes.
01:36While veneers may look great in a red carpet photo,
01:39they can also be problematic for transforming into character roles.
01:42TV and film fans are flooding online forums
01:45to complain about how an actor's veneers
01:47make it hard to see them as the characters they're portraying,
01:50especially if their smiles look way too modern,
01:52like Dakota Johnson in the 2022 period film Persuasion.
01:56Actors who have kept their natural smiles intact are praised,
02:00while Hollywood makeup departments are admitting
02:02that they're doing extensive work behind the scenes
02:05to make actors' veneers look less unnatural.
02:07I'm hanging out by my walker.
02:09Hi!
02:10Ha ha ha! They're fucking awful!
02:13And it's not just celebs who are ditching their chomps.
02:16While veneers used to be an option reserved for big-screen actors,
02:19it's now become one of the fastest-growing cosmetic procedures
02:22for anyone wanting a more perfect smile.
02:25Business is booming for veneer technicians,
02:27but staggeringly high costs, unnatural results,
02:30and dangerously shady credentials from service providers
02:33are just some of the risks involved in this quest for dental perfection.
02:37This is it from the back angle. Like, you can see the whole thing.
02:41That means non-famous people are at an even greater risk for botched results.
02:46Illegal and unaccredited veneer technicians
02:48are popping up across the country,
02:50passing themselves off as trained professionals
02:52while pocketing the unsuspecting customers' cash.
02:55Only a licensed dentist can perform cosmetic veneer procedures,
02:58and with prices as high as $60,000,
03:01lots of people are looking for cheaper alternatives.
03:03So while some think they're getting a great deal on a new smile,
03:06they're often leaving with massive regrets.
03:08Oversized, too bright, and gapless veneers
03:11make people's smiles look cartoonish.
03:13Poorly fitted veneers can cause major tooth pain,
03:16and in extreme cases, can totally ruin your ability to chew
03:20or even close your mouth properly.
03:21I'm not even joking. Like, I'm constantly in pain.
03:25I can't even close my mouth properly after a retainer every single day,
03:2824-7 pretty much, to even close my mouth comfortably.
03:32So are veneers even worth the hype?
03:34At least one California-based cosmetic dentist says no.
03:37Patients come to our practice with smiles that are Bs or B-pluses,
03:40and they want them to be A-pluses, she says,
03:42adding that many patients who get veneers
03:44don't understand the gamble they're making.
03:46So if you're considering a smile upgrade,
03:48be warned, veneers aren't worth the headache.
