00:00What is pillow face and why do some of the most beautiful people in Hollywood have it?
00:04If you've noticed your favorite famous actress or singer looking a bit strange these days,
00:08you're not alone. Thanks to the massive popularity of cosmetic injectables,
00:12more and more celebs are developing what plastic surgeons are calling pillow face.
00:17Pillow face refers to this new trend where hundreds of thousands of perfectly beautiful,
00:22healthy women, in trying to become even more beautiful,
00:25even more perfect, are literally disfiguring their faces with filler.
00:29Dermal fillers are injected under the skin to add volume and fullness to the face to combat
00:34the signs of aging. Wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of fat around the face can be fixed with
00:39filler, instantly plumping and tightening areas where it's injected. But filler isn't exactly a
00:44miracle procedure that can easily turn back the hands of time. When it's used too much,
00:49the telltale signs of pillow face are clear. Unnaturally tight and smooth skin that seems
00:54doughy and overfilled, sometimes even changing the original shape of one's features.
00:59The unintentional trend first started among aging celebrities who were known for their
01:03stunning looks in the 80s and 90s, like Nicole Kidman, Lisa Rinna, and Madonna.
01:09When stepping out to premieres and red carpets in recent years,
01:12fans were shocked that their once familiar faces have become almost unrecognizable. Hardcore
01:18Madonna fans, for example, are still struggling to perceive the newest version of her from the
01:23pop star's TikTok account. And it's not just famous women over 50 who fall victim to pillow
01:32face while trying to maintain their beauty. At just 27 years old, makeup mogul Kylie Jenner
01:37has had a long relationship with facial fillers, starting with her infamous inflated lips when she
01:43was only 18. In more recent years, paparazzi have caught some unflattering photos of Jenner
01:48that show her struggles with pillow face. Some photos were so bad they were used widely
01:54as an example by injectors and dermatologists to warn others against overfilling. It's even
01:59been speculated that the public's harsh critiques caused Kylie to don a sheer
02:04netted veil over her face at Paris Fashion Week this year. The fear of aging is starting to affect
02:13male stars too. People were puzzled by actor Ryan Gosling's pillow face while promoting his
02:19film The Fall Guy earlier this year, noting that his face is much rounder and bulkier than it had
02:24ever been before. Perhaps it was a direct response to the criticism the 43-year-old received when
02:29portrayed Ken in the Barbie movie in 2023, when fans called the actor out for being too old to
02:36play Ken. So beyond their looks, are these celebs losing their minds too? Why are so many stars
02:41taking filler to such extremes? In the case of famous Friends actress Courteney Cox, she admitted
02:47on a podcast that her mistakes using too much filler stemmed from being unable to recognize
02:52how drastically her face was changing. It's a domino effect. It's like you don't realize that
02:57you look a little off so then you keep doing more because you look normal to yourself and you look
03:01in the mirror and go oh that looks good. You think and you don't realize what it looks like to the
03:05outside person. I messed up a lot. While it's easy to blame famous people's vanity for going
03:10overboard with cosmetic procedures, in the case of Pillowface, it's actually the injectable
03:15industry that's facing the blame. For years, fillers have been called a safe, non-surgical option
03:22because it's not permanent, but recent studies have shown that's not quite the case.
03:27Whereas many filler fans have been told their injectables are temporary and require continuous
03:31upkeep, new information from MRI scans show a different story. Instead of breaking down naturally
03:37within the body as advertised, filler will instead spread and migrate around the face
03:42and can last as long as 12 years. Since the long-term effects of filler are still relatively
03:47unknown, the best thing any actor could do for their career is to ditch the Pillowface
03:53and embrace aging naturally. If not, they may risk becoming someone fans don't recognize.
