Post-match reaction from BirminghamWorld reporter Charlie Haffenden as Aston Villa lose 3-0 at Chelsea in the Premier League, courtesy of goals from Nicolas Jackson, Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer.
Transcript
00:00Aston Villa's run without a win in all competitions extends to 8 matches following today's disappointing 3-0 defeat away at Chelsea in the Premier League.
00:10From the very first whistle really, Villa were off it, Chelsea were on it. Very confident were the hosts, had loads more energy than Villa did.
00:17And a slightly adjusted structure from Unai Emery, or at least adjusted personnel.
00:22Jadon Fillajean out on the right hand side, John McGinn on the left and Morgan Rodgers returning just behind Oli Watkins up front.
00:29Midfield two of Boubacar Kamara and Uri Tielemans, Amadou Onan are still unavailable because of a foot injury.
00:35The back four was as strong as it should be really in terms of personnel.
00:39Ezra Konza back into defence, Matty Cash, Pau Torres and Luca Dean making up the final back four.
00:44But just lacking confidence really and Chelsea's press was so high, so intense.
00:49Villa passing out from the back, couldn't really string more than two or three passers together at once.
00:54And allowed Chelsea to clip in and be as clinical as they have been over recent weeks and to win by that three goal scoreline.
01:01Seven minutes was all it took for Nicholas Jackson to open the scoring as well.
01:05It came from Mark Kukere across down the left hand side, deflected off Matty Cash, onto Jackson who volleyed quite cleverly in off the post to make it 1-0.
01:14Just before that, Jadon Filigin failed to touch down Pau Torres' headed clearance and then Mark Kukere just chopped in to win the ball.
01:22Filigin was complaining he'd failed, but in reality he was just far too weak into the challenge.
01:27Just a weak little toe put into there and then let off really by Kukere coming through and sweeping up, doing a one-two, crossing the ball in and there's the all goal.
01:36And from that point really Villa are on the back foot, trying to grow themselves back into the game.
01:41But Chelsea had the confidence to press up high up the pitch.
01:44There was one big opportunity for Oli Watkins in that first half.
01:47John McGinn sweeping a ball in behind, Watkins tapping it past Wesley Fofana.
01:52But then his shot, as it has been over recent weeks, just lacking conviction straight at Robert Sanchez.
01:58There's actually a similar chance before the end of the first half as well where Watkins in a fairly similar position, but on the other side, hit it straight at Sanchez with very little power.
02:07Enzo Fernandez scored as well in the first half to make it 2-0 before the break.
02:11A clever finish after a one-two with Paul Palmer.
02:14Kind of a toe poke, but had quite a lot of power on it regardless.
02:17It's the far bottom right-hand corner.
02:19Emi Martinez, it wasn't his afternoon either as in the first half he made two glaring errors.
02:25The first one gave away an indirect free kick, picking up the ball after Pau Torres kind of nudged it back towards him.
02:32It was the slightest touch, but you can't really take the risk there of picking it up, especially when he had space to clear.
02:38Thankfully, Cole Palmer didn't score from that position.
02:40About eight yards out, Martinez made the save to spare his blushes.
02:44But then just a few minutes later, under very little pressure, he passed the ball straight to Nicholas Jackson.
02:49Who, if he was a bit more aware at the time, probably could have made a better touch and scored an open goal.
02:54As it was though, Martinez got away with that one.
02:57But what he didn't get away with was a hand injury he picked up during that first half.
03:01And he was taken off at the break after complaining of discomfort.
03:04Robin Olsen came on in the second half.
03:06And Olsen, in terms of a conceding record, had a better one than Martinez today as he conceded just the one.
03:12Cole Palmer made sure of all three points for Chelsea late on in this game.
03:16Curling in from the left-hand side, an absolute peach into the top left-hand corner.
03:21Nothing that Olsen could do about it.
03:23Just defensively, the structure all over the place, positioning all over the place for Villa.
03:28Didn't have any confidence passing out from the back, as I say.
03:31Far from clinical on the counter-attacks when they did get down the other end of the field.
03:35Nothing really going right whatsoever.
03:38Everyone looked quite deflated as well. The body language wasn't there.
03:41Emery today in the press conference saying that it's a different Chelsea team this year, granted.
03:46And Tottenham as well, a different Tottenham team when they went to face them.
03:50It's going to be a very different year, more of a difficult year, because the sides that were up and around the table a few years ago
03:56and struggling last year are now back up in the running.
03:59So Villa now down to 11th spot after eight games without a win in all competitions, five in the Premier League.
04:05It's a really strugglesome period.
04:07They have got an opportunity to bounce back at home mid-week as they take on Brentford,
04:11who have only got one point on the road this season.
04:14On paper then, really, Villa should have one in the bag, but it is going to be a difficult test once again as Brentford,
04:19the way they play, their high press, their counter-attacking ability, can be Villa's nemesis.
04:24We'll see you on Wednesday at Villa Park for more coverage on Birmingham World.
